Hilding Larson, President, Union Pacific Historical Society

Union Pacific Historical SocietyMinutes of the 2015

Annual Business Meeting

President Larry Tiffany greeted the at-tendees and asked for a motion from

the floor to open the 2014 Annual Busi-ness Meeting. The meeting was called at 8:40 a.m.

President Tiffany introduced Hild-ing Larson and announced that he was stepping down from the Treasurer’s posi-tion and that Hilding had been voted as the President of the UPHS. Hilding read the Treasurers Report and observed that there were some inconsistencies that were being corrected. Copies of the report are available, and if there any questions please contact the Treasurer. Motion was made to accept the report; seconded and ap-proved.

The current Board of Directors was introduced, and includes Hilding Larson, Greg Gardner, Larry Hochhalter, Ron Brozanic, Joe Perz, George Luchs, Marc Entze, Cate Kratville-Wrinn, Rob Leach-man, and Chris Faulk.

Minutes from the 2014 business meeting were read and approved.

Marketing and Membership Report was given by Rob Leachman. Rob gave a presentation on building the membership,

and noted that one of the most effective ways to gain new members was through personal contact. Motion was made to ac-cept the report; seconded and approved.

Mike Connor presented the Calen-dar Report and encouraged additional submissions from the membership. The 2016 calender is a tribute to Lou Schmitz and Tom Lee. Motion to accept was sec-onded and approved.

The Volunteer Report was made by Cate Kratville. Cate noted that volunteers are needed to represent the UPHS at vari-ous events, and outlined ways in which members could help. Motion to accept the report was made; seconded and approved.

Larry Hochhalter gave the Publica-tion Report and observed that sales were growing as additional products were added. Jeff Asay was thanked for his new book Union Pacific Northwest which was recently published by the society, and noted that Jeff was available to sign cop-ies of the book. The motion to accept the report was seconded and approved.

The Editor’s Report was presented by Marc Entze who thanked those who have supported and contributed to The Streamliner this past year, and encour-aged members to submit articles and to contact him with any article ideas. Mo-tion from the floor to accept the report;

seconded and approved.Archives Report was given by Greg

Gardner. Greg discussed the recent ac-quisition of the Lou Schmitz collection, and reviewed the guidelines for donating collections to the UPHS. Volunteers are always welcome for scanning drawings at the UPHS office in Cheyenne. Motion to accept the report was seconded and ap-proved.

The Convention Report was given by Hilding Larson who gave a presenta-tion on the 2016 convention to be held at Sacramento, CA. Proposed future con-ventions are as follows:

2017 - Denver Area 2018 - Pacific Northwest 2019 - Ogden: 150th Annivers-

ary of the Golden SpikeElections and Volunteer Reports

were made by Cate Kratville. There were no new nominees for the UPHS Board, so incumbents retained their seats. Volun-teers are needed to represent the UPHS at various events, including the UP Family Days event at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum. Motion to accept the report was made; seconded and approved.

The 2015 Annual Business Meet-ing adjourned at 9:35 a.m.

The holidays are upon us and I hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the Christmas season. I wanted to take this

opportunity to thank everyone who makes the UPHS a success. It takes many hours of volunteer effort to make the society run, and your work is much appreciated!

There are a couple of business items to review. We have a vacant seat on the Board of Directors, and the Board decided to leave the seat open until the Spring 2016 election, rather than appoint someone to a one-year term. Members in good standing are encour-aged to consider joining the Board and help us guide the future of the UPHS.

We continue to look for a person to fill the Treasurers position. The position requires 4-5 hours a month to post sales deposits from our Cheyenne office and well as computer time to gather up data from our web store and our credit card and PayPal payments and post the data to Quickbooks. In addition, the Treasurer handles payroll processing and quarterly payments, as well as the year end W2s and 1099s. If you have hands on experience with Quickbooks and have time to devote to the UPHS, we would appreciate hearing from you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] to discuss specifics.

I want to extend a big thank you to everyone for your continued support of the society. Your support enables not only the pub-lication of The Streamliner, but the extra projects, including books, CDs, and models. There has been growth in the number of Pres-ervation memberships, and I want to remind everyone that the amount over sustaining is tax deductible, making these membership levels a great way to contribute to the society.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, I want to wish you Happy Holidays and a safe and prosperous New Year!

Announcements

FROM THE CHEYENNE OFFICE

Bob KriegerUPHS Business Manager email: [email protected] Office: (307) 635-5197

We continue to receive new members, and I want to extend a welcome to those you who have just joined and thank every-

one for their continued support of the society. Your continued sup-port is vital to our success.

For those of you whom I was able to meet at our convention in Omaha, it was good to see you again as always. A couple of our members were able to stop out here in Cheyenne and visit the office and area, which I enjoy.

If you have not yet purchased any of our recent products, we still have merchandise left in the Company Store for sale. Including the Kistler audio CD, Atlas Hart ballast cars, a variety of books, includ-ing Jeff Asay’s expanded Union Pacific Northwest. I know the archive committee is getting closer to issuing another drawing CD.

Just a reminder that for those of you with email addresses, please keep us up to date on any changes. I always send out email notifications that is time to renew about a month before I do the regular mailing. If you renew following the emails it saves both you and the society some postage.

Introducing the MEMBERS AREA from the UNION PACIFIC HISTORICAL SOCIETY

As a service to our members, the Union Pacific Historical Society is making historical documents avail-able through our website as an online archive of reference material. Throughout its 150 year history, the Union Pacific generated a wealth of documents that enhance our understanding of the railroad’s history and inform prototype modeling. To house this material we created the MEMBERS AREA sec-tion of the UPHS website, which contains the collections.

We are pleased to have partnered with the Union Pacific Railroad Museum to provide high-qual-ity scans of documents -- beginning with annual reports and UP Info magazines -- from the museum’s collection. The Union Pacific Historical Society Collection includes material that has been do-nated to the society, as well as from individual collections, and includes a wide variety of documents from advertising and dining car menus to conductor books, dispatcher sheets, equipment diagrams, timetables, and more!
