NOVEMBER 2016 Every meeting I make I seem to learn something new. I did miss quite a few meetings this year but the November meeting was like cramming in 7 meeting all in one.
Our November TurnA-hon had something for everyone and I enjoyed them all. First there were two steady rests made from plywood and in-line skate wheels. One I had never seen before so I will be going through my piles looking for all the elements to make one. There were also two showing how they do bowls and how to get the natural edge to be balanced. With Christmas coming soon the bird house ornaments are always interesting and being able to make them efficiently is a welcome plus. Tagua nuts are something I may never do but you know what they says about using the word never. We also had a how to take better pictures
station. I know it is not a turning skill but very necessary to keep good memories of your work. The sanding mops are definitely something I will be doing. They will go a long way to covering up my turning abilities.
As I write this I am also reading about Arrowmont School suffering a tremendous loss to the fires burning around Gatlinburg, TN. It may be some time before we know the extent of the damage. I know there is a fundraising effort going on and if this is something you would consider participating in, I would encourage it.
Mark your calendars for 18th December for our annual Christmas party. There will be the expected competitions. Hopefully everyone signed up so we can get a good estimate of the meat and drinks the Club will be providing. I know everyone was supposed to designate what dish they were bringing (salad, vegetable, or dessert) . If you are still unsure what to bring, I like desserts. Please come out and enjoy the evening. Set-up starts at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30. This takes the place of our normally scheduled meeting.
The officers and board wish all turners a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy new year.

Christmas Party ~~~~~~~~
December 18, 2016 Woodcraft 5:30 pm - ?
One guest, Cliff Guard was present for the meeting. — asked the officers and board to consider participating in the Empty Bowls effort put on the local potters guild. They have not organized their effort yet. — discussed the effect of the Tennessee wildfires on the Arrowmont school. Two dormitories and a storage shed burned in the fire.
Bob: — discussed the turnover of the presidency with the incoming president. — mentioned that we should have three officers/board members who had e-signature authority on the club checking account. Currently, the president and treasurer have signatures on the account and group suggested the Chairman of the Board add his signature. This will ensure that two people are available to sign checks.
Dean: — provided the status of upcoming meeting demonstrators. Bill Caillet will demonstrate segmented bowls in February and Ron Thomas will do colored pieces in March. Barbara Dill will demo in either April or May. Dean will be working on getting a demonstrator for January since the Tim Yoder video “Catching the Catch” won’t be available..
Connie: — discussed preparations for the Christmas party. The party will take place on December 18th at Woodcraft. She reports that 47 people have signed up..
Sam: — reviewed the monthly financial report. — discussed the Virginian Pilot newspaper announcements for clubs. He will submit monthly announcements — addressed the need to complete an inventory of all club equipment and tools. Pete will schedule and validate the list against the latest inventory. — asked about the club electronic picture frame and if it was being used at Woodcraft. We took the frame to the members show and Steve now had it and put it in the club cabinet.
Ray: — discussed a call he received fro the Norfolk d’Art Center. They would like us to participate in their “Ask the Artist” gallery talk on Jan 5th or Feb 2nd. Several turners would do a presentation and demo on woodturning.
— discussed the upcoming CHKD “Moonlight and Mistletoe” gala and our donations to their silent auction. Jay’s bowl and Dwight’s salt & pepper grinders were assigned a price of $3000. — reported that no one had come forward to assist Steve as an A/V operator. Bob volunteered to assist after he steps down from the presidency. — asked if there were plans to hold classes in 2017. The board discussed possibilities but had no concrete plans. — said he would be putting out a pre-meeting announcement email and asked everyone for inputs.
Terry: — provided the board with a status of the Amazon Smile account. — asked about nomination for AAW’s John C. Campbell and Arrowmont scholarships. Ray will send an email to members asking for AAW members to submit their names if interested.
Steve: — noted outstanding articles remaining for the newsletter. — asked how we would handle turner-of-the-year nominations. The club discussed the process and potential recipients. — asked for a schedule of Turners’ Talk meetings for 2017. — reported that Scott Paris has an overhead mirror that could be used during meeting demos. — asked if the board and officers would consider selecting committee chairmen to run some events to relieve workload on some board and officers. — discussed a number of club-owned items that were being stored in Woodcraft and addressed some concerns about this imposing on the store staff.
Art: — addressed a concern about members losing tools and equipment during public demons and suggested that attendees label their equipment. — noted several concerns about sales at public demos becoming more important than turning demonstrations.
Any members who have topics they would like discussed at a board meeting can forward the topic in writing to any officer or board member.

Va Woodtu rn ing Sympos ium
On November 5 - 6, 2016
the Virginia Woodturning Symposium was held at the Augusta Expo Center, Fisherville, Va.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Fisherville is community of over 5000 and is a part of the Staunton–Waynesboro metropolitan area.
The weather was perfect the entire weekend with blue, cloudless skies and temperatures in the 30’s overnight, warming to the upper 60’s during the day.
Our club was well represented at the event with over 30 members attending. Not present in the group photo were: Dave Zurek, Steve Wohlgemuth, Amos Peterson, Martha & Ray Rountree, Dave Roberson and Ron Wood.
Trent Bosch, Lyle Jamieson, Martha & Ray Rountree, Bob Rosand, Frank Penta, Johannes Michelsen, John Jordan and Barry Gross were the event’s featured demonstrators. Jimmy Clewes was scheduled to attend, but due to an illness he had to withdraw. Thanks to Fred Williamson and Barbra D i l l who were contacted at the last minute . They filled his slots for Saturday and Sunday.
Over 20 vendors were on hand to sell
their products ranging from airbrushing to wood and all items I might add, at great discounts. The AAW was present to answer questions and enroll new members.
There was also a skills area to offer new and prospective woodturners a chance to experience woodturning one-on-one.
R a f f l e s were held both days with prizes of tools, gift certif icates, glues, woodturning DVD’s and two prizes to the lucky winners, a Jimmy Clewes 3 day hands on course at his studio in Las Vegas and oh, yeah, I was one of the winners.
As for me, I spent the two days watching demos by Trent, Bob, Frank, Johannes and Barry. Between demos I perused the main floor and drooled over what to buy.
And when you’re visiting this neck of the woods make it a point to visit Mrs.Rowes restaurant
— for some great home style cooking!
For those of you who haven’t attended a woodturning symposium I highly recommend that you take time to visit one or more in your area. You won’t be disappointed.
The Virginia Woodturner’s Symposium is a bi-annual event. Their next event will be in 2018. See you there!

Turning a Tulip by John Wolf I was visiting a woodworking store the other day and spotted a turned tulip sitting on a shelf. I don’t recall seeing plans for turning one of these, so I hope you find this helpful.
I start with a piece of square straight-grained wood. In this case I’m using stock ripped from a piece of scrap 2 X 4 construction lumber. I have made these tulips in several sizes, but I like those from 1-inch square stock the best. I cut the piece about 6 inches long. The jaws on my chuck will securely hold this size of square stock directly without having to turn a spigot first. Your chuck may require a different approach to hold the stock securely.
The end of the stock that will become the blossom end of the tulip must have a centerline marked down two adjacent sides for about 1 inch in length.
Use a French curve to draw a visually pleasing curve from one end of the centerline to the corner. Flip the French curve over to the other side of that same face of the blank and repeat the process. This forms a curved “V” shape centered on the side with the mouth of the “V” at the end of the blank. Repeat this layout process on the adjacent side.
Use a scroll saw, coping saw or similar tool to cut along the “V” shaped curves you have just drawn.
<< Flip the block and cut out the other “V.” This creates the mouth of the tulip flower.
>> Mount the blank in your chuck with the recently cut end on the tailstock side. 14

Turning a Tulip by John Wolf
<< Using a sharp spindle gouge delicately turn the flower shape starting at the very tip of the flower. The tip has only a small amount of wood that needs to be removed. Proceed with care! Further down the flower there is more wood to be removed. With the wood spinning it is easy to see the cut out shape of the “V” that will help you gauge when the profile is >> Stop the lathe periodically to determine whether you have made the flower round without remaining flat spots.
Continue turning the flower until you have a shape that is approximately like a tulip. Gently sand the turned contour, and then stop the lathe to sand the saw-cut surfaces as well.
<< Turn the first 1/2 inch of the flower’s stem just below the bowl. I reduce it to a diameter that looks appropriate rather than measuring it. That said, mine are generally between 1/8 and 3/16 diameter. Once you have done this first section of stem, proceed to turn the next 1/2 inch down to its finished diameter. Repeat this process until you have made all the stem you can without running into your chuck. Turning the stem in this step-wise fashion greatly reduces the risk of breaking it.
Remove your tulip from the chuck. You may find your tulip quite satisfactory and without need of further embellishment. I often color mine, however, typically with water based transparent stains. Some times I glue the bases of several together for a grouping. On other occasions I have cut the stems free from the turning base and placed them in a turned weed pot.
