Message from Club Growth Director Lu Zhang

Fellow Toastmasters,How are you doing? During the Covid time, I feel most fortunate to have my joband my Toastmasters connections. Being involved in multiple Covid rapid testprojects, I am proud that what I do can eventually help stop the virus fromspreading and save lives. My professional world does not change that much. I stillgo to work and see my coworkers daily. However, my Toastmasters world haschanged a lot. We now see each other online and speak through a small screen.During this trying time, Toastmasters helps us connect and share the camaraderie. After October renewals, membership retention dropped throughout District 43, andother districts too. How can we still achieve our membership goals? Here are three suggestions to clubofficers:

Keep an open mind - In the story the blind men and the elephant, six blind men got totally different ideasabout the elephant as they touched different parts of the giant creature. Remember, Covid has impacted ourlives in all kinds of ways. Some members are doing fine, but others may be traumatized during thispandemic. Members of Walmart Toastmasters Clubs have worked from home since March; their onlinemeeting experience will probably be different from mine. If your members can’t make the meeting, call, text,or e-mail them. Figure out what happened to their lives and how online meeting does or does not fit theirneeds. The more perspectives you learn, the less likely you will be like those blind men.

Be creative – Once you know the challenges members have experienced, find ways to meet their needs inthis virtual world. How to make it easier for members to join club meetings? How to make meetingsengaging? Different clubs will have different answers. Corporate clubs were hit heavily as their membershipis usually employment-based; many corporations struggled to survive during the pandemic. Some corporateclubs had to cancel club meetings due to work meeting schedules or upcoming deadlines. When thishappens, Mphasis Memphis turns a club meeting into an education session to vet Pathways questions.Less prep, more club meetings! In community clubs, many ideas can make meetings FUN. In some clubs, joke masters set a tone early in the meeting. NWA Toastleaders has table topics speakers describe anobject and other members guess what it is. Be creative and try different things until you find what works wellin your club.

Invite! Invite! Invite! Especially now, “We miss you!” and “We care about you!” will melt people’s hearts. In April, I reached out to10 previous members of my home club Razorback Word Masters; they all replied to my emails. Six visitedthe very next meeting and four renewed their membership. Use the club e-mail list, social media, and wordof mouth to share the wonders that you put together. Also, invite your members to attend district events. With ZOOM, no matter where we are, we can gather within 30 seconds by clicking the (correct) meetinglink.

The Monthly Club Growth Social Mingle lets members and club officers throughout District 43 share ideasand best practices. We meet on the last Tuesday of every month, from 7:30-8:30 pm. So far, we’ve heardconversations between club officers from our biggest and newest clubs. We have discussed the memberlifecycle, and we have conducted club sponsor/mentor/coach training and two-part marketing workshops.Other topics upcoming include conducting a hybrid club meeting, special club types, and more club helpertraining. What keeps members connected is the relationship that people are craving. In the process toknow the Covid elephant better, we will all become stronger leaders. The latest Time Magazine called 2020“the worst year ever”.

I hope 2021 will be our proudest year. Impossible Is Nothing,

Lu Zhang, DTM Club Growth Director

Speech Contests Update It was announced in August that all Speech Contests at the Area-, Division-, and District-levels must beconducted online for the 2020-2021 program year.

This is an exception to General Rules for all Toastmasters Speech Contests, 2. Eligibility, A., 9, which states,“Each contestant must be physically present to compete beyond the club level. Participation by audio, video, orother remote technology is not permitted beyond the club level.” Other than this exception, the Speech ContestRulebook must be followed as far as it is applicable.

We recognize that this news came as a surprise to some and want to thank you for your adaptability, flexibility, and continued commitment during these uncertain times. We are inspired to see the creative ways you areleading and supporting your District.

Speakathons ... additional speaking opportunities With the continuing and evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, some members may still experiencedifficulties finding opportunities to present speeches in the club setting. As a club officer, you may occasionallyencounter challenges with conducting meetings where there are enough participants to provide both speechesand effective evaluations. Many clubs have found success with holding Speakathons, where members cancome together to solely focus on giving speeches to progress on their path.

To increase speaking opportunities for our members, the Board of Directors has decided to reinstate allowances regarding Speakathon events. Effective immediately and until June 30, 2021, the followingmodifications are in place:
