Dear Mercer Parents/Guardians,

The hallways of Mercer are filled with the hustle and bustle of

winter as students charge towards the most challenging work of

the school year. Already, students have put forth great efforts

while teachers strive to challenge all to reach goals promoting

hard work and perseverance. For the first marking period alone,

Mercer recognized over 900 of its students for achieving either

the Honor or High Honor Roll. Way to go, Mountain Lions! The winter months will provide us more excitement and chances

to spread holiday cheer to those in need. The LEO Club will

begin its “Toys for Tots” drive with a bin in the main office. The

Science Department will hold its “Invention Convention” on the

night of December 11th at 6:30 PM, with the PTA providing

scholarships to the winners. The first concert of the year will be

an 8th grade winter concert on December 11th at Champe. 7th

Grade Strings will perform on December 17th at 7:00 PM at

Mercer. On December 19th, all of the students at Mercer will get

to hear the 8th grade band during school as we wrap up for the

winter break. During this week, our music department will travel

to the elementary schools that feed into Mercer and perform for

the students there, spreading the Mercer holiday spirit. Upon return from the winter break, the Drama Club will begin

preparing for its production of Suessical the Musical for its

March performances. The annual Spelling Bee will have the

students abuzz on January 6th. Shortly thereafter, the second

marking period will come to a close on January 23rd. Finally, the

music department will be putting on many performances, with 6th

Grand Band performing on January 21st, 7th Grade Band on

January 22nd, and 7th Grade Chorus and Orchestra performing on

January 29th at Champe. The teachers of Mercer will also be working on improving the

craft of teaching in January. As part of the school improvement

plan (SIP), the teachers will be involved in the second session of

content-specific professional development. The focus from the

professional development results from the continuous

walkthroughs that the Mercer Administration Team conducts in

collaboration with the “look for’s” developed by the teachers.

The content teams (CLT’s) are then led by the Subject Area Lead

Teachers (SALT’s) through professional development activities

to build on strengths and remediate weaknesses that are shown in

the data collected.

In This Issue...

As we approach the first extended break from school, please be

sure to take some time to talk to your son or daughter about what

is happening at Mercer. Set some goals for him/her for the

second half of the year and beyond. Finally, let him/her take

some time to relax from the grind of the first part of the year and

come back invigorated for an action-packed finale. Enjoy the

holidays!

Stress Reduction Strategies

From: http://www.vsacca.org/ Stress is a natural part of every young person’s life. Students’ stress is

usually related to everyday experiences, worries and challenges at school, home, in the community and

within their peer group. Young people, like adults, can benefit from learning and practicing stress

management skills. See below for some healthy strategies to manage stress:

Eat healthy meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables

Maintain daily routine and schedule

Exercise regularly

Avoid caffeine (can increase feelings of anxiety and agitation)

Do things you enjoy (for example: art, listening to music, being outdoors, dancing, writing poetry,

reading, etc.)

Get good amounts of rest and sleep

State feelings in a clear way (for example: “I feel angry when you yell at me.”)

Decrease negative self-talk (for example: transform “My grades will never get any better.” to “I

may not be doing so well now, but my grades can improve if I get extra help and I do all my

homework.”)

Spend time with friends who help you cope in a positive way

Learn relaxation techniques (such as: deep breathing, muscle relaxation, meditation)

Talk to caring adults

Humor/laughter (Example: watch a funny show or movie.)

Use a stress ball

Stay organized

Now in our 11th year! Go Mountain Lions! Readers Are Leaders!

Book Fair Memories

There are numerous people who helped make our annual Book Fair a great success. First, thank you

to all of our volunteers for graciously sharing their time and talents:

Andrea Carroll, Karin Cascio, Linda Forester, Carrie Fuentes, Beth Meeker, Roohi Rizvi, Robert Rocheford, Sukirti Sharma, Kavita Solanki, Laura Tekrony, Sambi Vang and Carrie Wynder

Special thanks to Mercer’s faculty and staff for daily support of this adventure—a fundraiser to benefit all

Mercer students. Proceeds from the Book Fair come in two forms: funds (to supply materials to challenge and

educate our students) and books (to aid their comprehension and literacy development).

It’s That Time Again

Winter Break is fast

approaching. Help your

student to locate any

books that he or she

would like to return

before the

holidays.

I Resolve

Don’t look now, but it’s almost time to

make those annual resolutions. What

will you do in 2015 to increase your

literacy skills and your literary

development? Resolve to visit the

library soon!

Coming Soon

April 16, 2015 is the date of our fifth annual LIVING HISTORY DAY.

Do you have a friend, relative, or contact willing to share his or her experiences

of life during World War II, Korean or Vietnam Wars?

Contact Claire Scholz, [email protected] with your information today.

Thank you!

The Mercer-Cultural Collection

Mercer library houses a collection

of books representing the

cultures and languages of our

Mercer family. To date, we have

acquired titles in German,

Hindi, French, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Russian,

Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Won’t you help us grow this valuable resource?

Consider giving the library the gift of a book in your

family’s language. We look forward to sharing books

that are meaningful and enjoyed by the families of our

students.
