Parish Stewardship The Most Holy Trinity

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

June 18, 2017

My wife and I are Hospital Ministers of Holy Communion. About once a month after 9:00 mass we collect the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle and visit about 20 patients at Shands Hospital. It can be a challenging, yet extremely fulfilling, experience. We witness the joy, peace, faith, and healing experienced by patients who receive the Body of Christ in their hospital rooms, some of whom may not leave the hospital alive. It is a deeply spiritual experience for us, as well as for them. I highly recommend this minis-try to all who would be comfortable in this ministry, especially health care providers. Feel free to contact me about this (the parish office has my contact info). However, that is not the real reason for this post. After mass we transport the Blessed Sacrament to the hospital, and there is usually some that we return to the tabernacle when we are finished. When we are in route, I am conscious that in my pocket I am carrying the body of Jesus in a pyx (a small metal container for this purpose). I often think to myself, “I should avoid my usual vices at this time because I am bearing Christ on my person.” For example, I would feel particularly bad if I cursed someone who pulled out in front of me driving to or returning from Shands. Most people would say, “I know what you mean. I’d try to be on my best behavior under those circumstances, too.” Then it occurred to me – when we receive the Precious Body and Blood at Communion at mass, Jesus is body, soul, and divinity in us. Yet how many of us put on the same appropriate self-consciousness that I discussed above? Does Jesus wear out in our bodies? Of course not! If only we would not take for granted the immense gift and obligation we receive when we accept Jesus’ real presence into our lives via the Eucharist. How different would our lives be. If only the entire Church would put on this disposition after every mass, how much would we witness to what we profess and then change the world. To me, this is the greatest shortcoming of our faith – our failure to witness with our lives the sacrament that we alone possess. “Where’s the stewardship connection?” you may ask. Stewardship is “the activity or job of protecting and being responsible for something.” When we have received Jesus into our lives and bodies, we are stewards of His Real Presence. “Lord Jesus, you gave of yourself completely for our salvation, and you renew this gift at every celebration of the Eucharist through your Precious Body and Blood. Open my mind, my heart, and my soul with the gift of your Spirit to the totality of your presence in me. May I be forever transformed by your real loving presence in my body and be a true witness to you through this sacrament. Amen.” Finally, happy Father’s Day to all of the men who are fathers or who are father figures. May we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us and strengthen us in our fatherly vocations. May our love mirror the love of God our Father.
