The term is drawing to a close and I’m sure many of you are ready for a break after a very busy term! Although there are exams next term and for many of you field work is starting, please do make sure you take some time to rest and enjoy spending time with friends and family. Farewell

Professor Stuart HarropWe would like to announce that Professor Stuart Harrop who has been working at Kent since 1996 will be leaving us at the end of April to take up a position at the University of Sussex

Prior to academia Stuart qualified as a solicitor and enjoyed a wide ranging career as a corporate lawyer including working for the Stock Exchange London and as Director of Legal Services for the RSPCA

Stuart is a specialist lawyer in biodiversity preservation wild animal welfare law and climate change an area of expertise which was missing when he joined DICE

Stuart has made a significant impact on the School through his work as Director of DICE Director of Research and as Head of School for various periods of time Stuart has also continued to develop his research profile including pioneering research on legal recognition of traditional agricultural landscapes and also conservation and religion Stuart has published extensively and also generated significant income through research grants including the CHARM project focusing on conservation in the English Channel

Stuart is also a professional photographer who has presented his work at a number of exhibitions and hersquos also led photographic workshops The images on this page are just a few of the wonderful shots taken by Stuart

Stuart will also be fondly remembered for brightening up our days with his stories and anecdotes Being an exceptionally well connected man Stuart will often regale colleagues with tales of his contact with the great and the good from the world of conservation but also from show business and sport Having even been complimented for his marvellous suit by Steve Jobs Other particularly memorable encounters include those with Brian May Victoria Beckham Jeremy Irons and his role as a dalek in Dr Who (which sadly got edited out)

Richard Griffiths has also commented that he will miss future opportunities to entertain people with their Peter Cook and Dudley Moore double-act If yoursquove not seen it you must ask them before Stuart heads off in to the Kent sunset on the 30th April

We all wish Stuart the very best for the future and thank him greatly for the contributions and investments he has made to the School and University

Caroline GrundyWe also announce today that our hugely valued Reception and Clerical Assistant Caroline Grundy is retiring and will be leaving us on the 12th April Caroline has worked at the University since

September 2003 and now leaves us to embark on an adventure of travel and relocation provoking jealously back in the office at the prospect of us not being able to retire until at least 85

Caroline has remained a dedicated and loyal team member during times of great change including having to adjust to four different managers and management styles

To attempt to show our full appreciation of Caroline some staff have reflected on what they will miss and fun things they will remember about her

ldquoCaroline is quite a private person but I have always admired her for all the things she does ie concertplaycinema watching bird song recognition courses travel she sings in the University choir One of her passions is to take a long leisurely bath after work to unwind from the day She is a hoarder of things both at work and at home she is of the mind-set where lsquoit may come in usefulrsquordquo

ldquoShe loves the photocopier and refers to it as lsquoher babyrsquordquo

ldquoShe actually does all the things that most of us only think about doing but profess to be too busyrdquo

ldquoShersquos the only one of the admin team (that we know about) who has seen Roy in his pyjamas - when he was in hospitalrdquo

ldquoCaroline has a wonderfully wicked sense of humourrdquo

ldquoI will miss her she has a wealth of knowledge about all sorts of thingsrdquo

Monica Stalio and Emma Ford MSc by Research in Biodiversity Management both presented posters

at the recent Student Conference on Conservation Science Cambridge

The conference is aimed entirely at students and itrsquos aim is lsquoto help young conservation scientists gain experience learn new ideas and make contacts that will be valuable for their future careersrsquo

Monicarsquos poster focused on the changes (ecological social and financial) occurring in Kia (Fiji) after the establishment of a marine protected area adjacent to the island

When asked about her experience of the conference Monica said ldquoMy personal experience was great I met lots of people from everywhere the world shared ideas discussed different interests and

views met academics from Cambridge and other prestigious universities and above everything I met Dr Martin Fisher (editor of Flora and Fauna International) and I attended an inspiring plenary from Monique Borgerhoff Mulder

So many people determined to make a difference I regained hope in humanityhelliprdquo

AAPA Conference TennesseeDr Patrick Mahoney and PhD Student Justyna Mizkiewicz will be presenting their research on hard tissue histology at the annual conference of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists between 9-13 April in Knoxville Tennessee

Justyna won the Politzer Travel Award to enable her to attend this conference so we look forward to hearing all about it upon their return

Update From The FieldJoaquiacuten Carrizosa is an anthropologist with years of experience in the Amazonian piedmont in Colombia on issues relating to indigenous use access and rights to land Much of his work has focused in the Putumayo a region scarred by drug-related political and structural violence linked to the economies of cocaine oil and neoliberal policies In 2012 his research was awarded with the Darrell Posey (International Society of Ethnobiology) PhD fellow allowing him to support diverse ground-based strategies linked to his investigation through which local populations may achieve territorial autonomy and improved livelihoods

He is currently completing his doctoral thesis based jointly at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the School of Anthropology and Conservation at the University of Kent (UK) This official

agreement has opened a very promising space for future students attending to these universities interested in social and environmental research in diverse regions of the Colombian Amazon

Currently he is collaborating with Dr Miguel Alexiades and People and Plants International in Mexico on diverse initiatives around territorial issues that involve indigenous schools and universities in the states of Puebla Veracruz and Guerrero 7

Caroline GrundyWe also announce today that our hugely valued Reception and Clerical Assistant Caroline Grundy is retiring and will be leaving us on the 12th April Caroline has worked at the University since

September 2003 and now leaves us to embark on an adventure of travel and relocation provoking jealously back in the office at the prospect of us not being able to retire until at least 85

Caroline has remained a dedicated and loyal team member during times of great change including having to adjust to four different managers and management styles

To attempt to show our full appreciation of Caroline some staff have reflected on what they will miss and fun things they will remember about her

Update From The FieldJoaquiacuten Carrizosa is an anthropologist with years of experience in the Amazonian piedmont in Colombia on issues relating to indigenous use access and rights to land Much of his work has focused in the Putumayo a region scarred by drug-related political and structural violence linked to the economies of cocaine oil and neoliberal policies In 2012 his research was awarded with the Darrell Posey (International Society of Ethnobiology) PhD fellow allowing him to support diverse ground-based strategies linked to his investigation through which local populations may achieve territorial autonomy and improved livelihoods

Update From The FieldJoaquiacuten Carrizosa is an anthropologist with years of experience in the Amazonian piedmont in Colombia on issues relating to indigenous use access and rights to land Much of his work has focused in the Putumayo a region scarred by drug-related political and structural violence linked to the economies of cocaine oil and neoliberal policies In 2012 his research was awarded with the Darrell Posey (International Society of Ethnobiology) PhD fellow allowing him to support diverse ground-based strategies linked to his investigation through which local populations may achieve territorial autonomy and improved livelihoods

He is currently completing his doctoral thesis based jointly at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the School of Anthropology and Conservation at the University of Kent (UK) This official

agreement has opened a very promising space for future students attending to these universities interested in social and environmental research in diverse regions of the Colombian Amazon

Currently he is collaborating with Dr Miguel Alexiades and People and Plants International in Mexico on diverse initiatives around territorial issues that involve indigenous schools and universities in the states of Puebla Veracruz and Guerrero 7

The conference is aimed entirely at students and itrsquos aim is lsquoto help young conservation scientists gain experience learn new ideas and make contacts that will be valuable for their future careersrsquo

Monicarsquos poster focused on the changes (ecological social and financial) occurring in Kia (Fiji) after the establishment of a marine protected area adjacent to the island

When asked about her experience of the conference Monica said ldquoMy personal experience was great I met lots of people from everywhere the world shared ideas discussed different interests and

views met academics from Cambridge and other prestigious universities and above everything I met Dr Martin Fisher (editor of Flora and Fauna International) and I attended an inspiring plenary from Monique Borgerhoff Mulder
