April 2009Volume Eighteen Number 8

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are an Alleluia People! May I take this occasion to wish you and yours all the joy associated with the Easter Season. For the Christian communities, this is our major feast. As Saint Paul reminds us, it is only because Jesus rose from the dead that we have reason for hope. His passage from this life to heaven foreshadows our own passing into New Life. “Let the holy anthems rise.”

Now that spring has arrived and a new sports season begun, our campus is alive with boys occupying all of the fields and outside courts. Excitement is in the air and athletic games are waiting you. I invite you to take a few moments to visit our new felids and see the opportunities that are available to your sons. La Salle can be very proud of what awaits our “Explorers” this spring. New scoreboards on all of the fields will keep you in the game and knowing what is happening. I hope that our spring athletes will distinguish themselves for their sportsmanship and have much success in the coming season.

With only eight weeks remaining before the end of the academic year, things are rapidly coming to a close. Many of our clubs and extracurricular activties are in their final sessions. Our Speech and Debate teams are advancing toward national titles and our Fine Arts Program is preparing for the Arts Week Festival and spring concerts. Our parents’ organizations are putting the final touches on their Fashion Show, NYC Trip, and the Father/Son Baseball trip to see the Baltimore Orioles. Our seniors are in the final countdown to graduation and AP testing is just around the corner. It seems that every day is filled with tremendous energy and activity.

I am happy to report that our Capital Campaign is approaching $19M and headed toward our next goal of $20M. These have been difficult months, but our alumni and friends continue to hold La Salle as a very high priority. Construction on the second floor of McLean Hall has been completed and we are in the final stage with work on the main floor. Next August, will see the completion of this $38M expansion. Who would have believed that we would be speaking of completion versus yet another phase? I am certain everyone will be happy when the campus is restored to normal. La Salle takes pride not only in its students’ success, but also in providing the best environment for our young men and their teachers. Truly, La Salle is second to none.

La Salle will welcome Bishop Joseph McFadden as celebrant of our Lenten Liturgy on April 7, 2009. Following this liturgy, the Bishop will visit the school and enjoy a luncheon hosted by our students. I am certain that he will be treated to what a Lasallian education has meant for these students.

May the Joy of Easter Morning continue to echo in your home throughout this holy season. Remember often to utter the words Alleluia, Alleluia.

Sincerely yours,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Easter will be here shortly – the holiest time in the Church’s calendar. We must always remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made because of his love for us and the promise that lives on for us as a result of his glorious resurrection. Our Easter recess will begin on Thursday, April 9, 2009. Classes will resume on Monday, April 20, 2009. Please take time during the Easter Break to celebrate the promise of Easter!

As you know, La Salle was recently in USAToday for having received a 2008-2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement from the Siemens Foundation and the College Board. La Salle was the only high school in Pennsylvania and one of only two Catholic schools in the nation to be so honored. This award specifically recognizes superior AP programs and performance in mathematics, science, and technology and carries with it a $1,000.00 gift to the school. Congratulations to all AP teachers and students who helped La Salle receive this wonderful recognition.

On Friday, April 24, 2009, we will celebrate our fifth annual Fran Johnson Field Day. The rain date for this event is Monday, April 27, 2009. There will be no classes on Field Day; rather, Mrs. Julia Maher and members of our Student Government have been working very hard to organize a day of fun-filled activities in remembrance of Fran Johnson. Mr. Johnson was an esteemed member of the English and Religion departments who died in October of 2003 after a battle with cancer.

Despite the fact that we are now in the Spring Sports season, our Winter Sports teams continue to impress. Please join me in congratulating Coach Frank Lichtner and his swim team for a fantastic finish to their season by placing third in the state championship. Congratulations are also in order for Coach Wally Muehlcronner and the Hockey Team who captured their second straight Flyers Cup.

La Salle’s academic teams are also doing extremely well. Congratulations to Ray Shay and his Speech and Debate Team which took first place in the National Forensic League Valley Forge District Tournament. Eight members of the team will represent La Salle in the NFL Nationals. The Academic Decathlon Team finished third in the state and our Mathletes, who are preparing for the State Tournament, went undefeated in the regular season and finished first in the area.

We have so much to be proud of at La Salle! As always, thank you for all that you do in assisting us in our efforts to give your young men an excellent and well-rounded educational experience.

I wish you a very happy and blessed Easter!

Sincerely yours,

Joseph L. Marchese Principal

Honor Roll CorrectionsOur last issue of The Belcroft proudly listed our honor students; unfortunately the list was not complete at the time of publication. Academic Affairs would like to apologize for this error of omission. Additional students meriting First Honors include: Matthew J. Magarity and Kieran J. Trainer of the Class of 2012. John Toner, Class of 2010, received Second Honors. Congratulations, gentlemen, on a job well done!

Math, Science, and Technology Come Out On TopAs you may know, La Salle recently received the prestigious Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, sponsored by the College Board, for outstanding A.P. performance in the areas of Math, Science, and Technology. This honor was bestowed on fifty secondary schools nationally – one per state. La Salle was the only Catholic Boys School in the nation to receive recognition. Although numerous items of information were submitted, it is the consistent superior performance, along with the breadth and depth of our enormous A.P. and technology programs that we believe put La Salle over the top. The award is testament to all of our teachers, students, and families; especially those who have long since graduated and moved on. In the congratulatory letter from the College Board, they commended us as a school that “represents the best of American education. Congratulations to teaching and learning at La Salle.

2009-2010 Course Registration UpdatesAside from the immediate focus of finishing our current academic year strong, planning for next year’s academic start is in full swing. Registration for the 2009-2010 school year is expected to finish up before Easter break begins on Wednesday, April 8, 2009. As students finish submitting their requests, counselors will review and approve their selections. As soon as a student’s selections are approved, a “parent sign-off sheet” will show up in your son’s Naviance account under the “course requests” heading. This form will serve as a verification of his course requests. The student and his parents should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor(s) as soon as possible. Returning the signature sheet to La Salle is the responsibility of each student. It will be collected throughout April by your son’s counselor. The process will end with you son submitting the sign-off sheet. Students will have until Thursday, April 23, 2009 to entertain changes. On a related note, it has been explained to your son that all placements are approved by his teachers and reviewed by the respective department chair in that subject

area. If you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Donahue or Mrs. Zoeltsch), Math (Mr. Ponisciak), or Science (Mr. Gillespie), please contact the appropriate department chairperson. Other, more specific concerns in placements should be forwarded to the appropriate teacher or counselor.

Moving forward, the scheduling of students will take many months. It is a complex process since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students. Once a roster is complete and the school year begins – that is the student’s roster. We cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported by compelling educational reasons). Your support of our efforts is greatly appreciated. Each student will receive his official schedule for the 2009-2010 academic year in late August..

Second Floor of McLean Hall Now OpenThe newly refurbished second floor of McLean Hall was opened on March 17, 2009. This “ahead of schedule” release coincided with the closing of the academic portion of the first floor of McLean Hall. Although construction is expected to continue on the first floor until the beginning of September, the renovated second floor will now provide La Salle students with even more space to learn. The “over the hill” transition moves the school in a direction of officially working with a net surplus of classroom space since the start of construction last year. The second floor space includes eleven newly opened classrooms and two departmental offices. It also houses a new Writing Center, Yearbook Office, Wisterian (Newspaper) Office, and Resource Rooms for English and Social Studies. Similar to the third floor, the second floor has new lockers, windows, lighting, carpeting, and a “soon-to-be popular” climate control system. Thank you for your continued patience and support during this monumental project.

GraduationAs is the custom at La Salle, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2009 who have members of the clergy in their families who would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2009. If you have a family member who is a priest, and would like to concelebrate the Mass at graduation, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Russo at (215) 233-2911, ext. 4896 by Friday, May 1, 2009.

Senior Night Thursday, February 19, 2009 marked 100 Days to Graduation (Saturday, May 30, 2009) for the Class of 2009. The seniors celebrated with a dress-down day, a pasta dinner, and entertainment by hypnotist Kevin Hurley. The seniors and faculty/staff who attended had a wonderful time! This was the 2nd Annual celebration thanks to the Mothers’ Club’s Fran Johnson Mini Grant that provided some of the funding.

How To Succeed In Business Without Really TryingCongratulations to the cast, stage crew, and faculty/staff involved with the production of “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”. The following students, faculty, and staff did a wonderful job bringing us four memorable performances:

Student Absences On the day a student will be absent from school, one of his parents must call the Student Affairs Office at (215) 233-4140 before 9:00 am. A student who has been absent for one or more days, must present a note signed by one of his parents to the Student Affairs Office before going to class. Please call the specified number for attendance rather than the school number to report an absence.

Student Council ElectionsStudent Council Elections for 2009 - 2010 will begin in April and conclude by mid May. Students have the opportunity to run for Executive Officers (seniors only), Class Officers, and/or Senators.

Speak Up!Thank you to all of the parents, students and educators who attended Speak Up! on March 11, 2009 at Gwynedd Mercy. The evening was a huge success.

Paul Nucero ’09, Mike Camusi ’10, and Sam Pelone ‘10 received the JIMMY Coin, an award that recognizes students who exhibit the qualities of resiliency, empathy, humility, loyalty. They are nominated by their peers because they see the goodness and potential in others, use their experiences to help those around them, are non-judgmental, and most often are non-traditional school leaders. Congratulations to these three young men who continue in their leadership at La Salle.

Field DayLa Salle’s 4th Annual Field Day is scheduled for Friday, April 24, 2009 (rain date Monday, April 27, 2009). For the past five years this event has been a huge success due to the planning and execution of the day done by the Student Council. The enthusiasm of the faculty, staff and the student body for the day has been great. Students are able to “compete” in games of knowledge, dexterity, and athleticism while interacting with faculty and staff who run the events and/or accompany the students around the campus. Two favorites of the students have been the tricycle races and dodge ball – competitions sure to return again this year. The day will end with a final assembly, which will feature a dunking contest (faculty and students), a tug-of-war between homerooms on each level, and the walk/run on the track in memory of Fran Johnson, a teacher/coach who passed away in 2004. It should be a great day for the entire La Salle community.

Blood DriveThe De La Salle Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on February 18, 2009. For several years, the American Red Cross had set a goal of 80 units. Last year’s blood drive exceeded the goal and reached 94 units, so the American Red Cross set our goal at 100 units for this year’s drive. The La Salle Community responded and donated 108 units.

Clothing Needed for Service Project in BoliviaIn June, a group of nineteen La Salle students will travel to Bolivia and work with the poor of Cochabamba in an effort to spread the Lasallian mission to far reaches of the world. These boys will be the fourth group of La Salle students to visit Bolivia as part of the Lasallian Service Corps. During their time in Bolivia, they will help to build schools, visit with young children in orphanages as well as patients in public hospitals, and provide food and clothing to the needy.

Clothing can be donated to this worthy effort. Collection bins will be located outside of the Main Office. All types and sizes of clothing is needed – infants, boys, girls, mens (no XL or XXL), and womens. Unfortunately, they cannot use shoes, jeans, winter coats, or bulky items. In addition, the group needs smaller stuffed animals (beanie babies, webkinz, and other stuffed figures of that size).

The project relies on these donated items, so please be as generous as possible. In the event that you have any questions, please contact Senora Lastenia Breen at (215) 402-4142 or [email protected].

Attention Seniors and Parents of SeniorsAll seniors who receive any scholarship or grant awards from any college (whether or not they intend to enroll) must bring a copy of the verification letter to the College Counseling Center as soon as it is received. In order for a student’s name to appear in the Graduation Program as a scholarship recipient, he must follow this procedure.

Be prepared to register at ONE college by that college’s registration deadline. May 1, 2009 is the date viewed by the collegiate community as the universal reply date for regular admission. You will be required to send an admission and/or housing deposit to confirm your enrollment intentions.

Under no circumstances should you enroll at more than one college.

After the student has committed to a college, he should write a letter informing all other colleges of his intention to enroll elsewhere. This is an obligation to be taken seriously. It enables other students who may be “wait listed” to move up on that list.

We encourage the seniors to inform teachers about their college plans and to thank them for writing letters of recommendation on their behalf.

Just for Juniors and Parents of JuniorsBe sure to visit the Colleg Counseling Department’s page on the school’s website, www.lschs.org/college, which is filled with important information about the college search and application process.

You may also want to check the April 2009 edition of Money for a very informative article, “Ease the Tuition Squeeze”.

Mark your calendars! Villanova University will host the Main Line College Fair on April 28, 2009 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Pavilion on the Villanova Campus. Admission counselors from over 300 hundred colleges and universities will be present to discuss entrance requirements, curriculum offerings, and financial aid. The event will provide students and their families the opportunity to gather information about colleges and universities from across the country.

Check the calendar on our webpage for a list of college fairs, open houses, and information nights.

A list of academic and community service summer programs for sophomores and juniors is available on our college counseling website – www.lschs.org/college - click on the Pre-College Summer Programs link. Many of these programs take place on college campuses locally, nationally, and internationally.

Juniors are reminded to be aware that May 5, 2009 is the deadline for the June 6, 2009 SAT. Please consider taking the SAT II: Subject Tests on June 6, 2009. Many selective colleges require or recommend subject tests for admission or placement. The ACT registration deadline is May 8, 2009 for the June 13, 2009 test. Remember to register for the Writing Section when taking the ACT. See the standardized testing tab on our website for details.

With the costs of college education increasing, now is a good time to investigate scholarship programs at www.lschs.org/college under the link for scholarships and links and resources. Visiting www.finaid.com is one way of learning more about financial aid in general. This site also provides a method to determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as does the FAFSA early estimate of eligibility for federal student aid at www.FAFSA4caster.ed.gov.

Visits to college campuses are most important in finding the right match. Make every effort to visit campuses while classes are in session to get a realistic view of campus life.

Parents of juniors are reminded to return to the following forms (if you have not already done so) to the College Counseling Center:

• Permission to Release Academic Information

• Parent’s Section

• Criteria for Selecting Colleges

Remember how to be a PARENT during the teenage years.Brain research shows that parents play a critical role during the teenage years. While teens are mature in some ways, they still need parents to help them make responsible decisions.

How can you do that? Here’s an easy way to remember some of the things you can do. Just be a PARENT:

P = Promote positive activities. Help your son channel his energy into worthwhile programs. Boys are great at physical challenges. They also understand technology better than many adults.

A = Assist your son with activities that require planning. The last part of the brain to develop is what’s known as the prefrontal cortex. It is involved in planning, decision making and impulse control. Since most teens still lack the ability to do these things well, they need parents to help them. So ask questions. “What will you do if kids are drinking at the party?”

R = Remind your son to ask for advice. When he does, say you are glad he asked. Talk about how you make decisions.

E = Encourage behaviors that promote good brain development. Make sure your son avoids drugs and alcohol. Encourage him to get regular exercise.

N = N ever underestimate the effects of alcohol on a teen’s brain. Research shows teens are affected much more strongly by alcohol. Alcohol can harm a teen’s brain development.

T = Tolerate. Teens make mistakes. Expect them to do so. Plan for them. Then help your teen get back on the right track as soon as he can.

“Translate” your son’s words before reacting.Your son has just said something disrespectful to you. You’re angry, but you know that losing your temper will not help.

Try pretending you’re at the United Nations. If you’ve ever watched those international meetings on TV, you’ve seen people wearing headphones. They’re not listening to the person who is talking. They are listening to a translator instead. Usually, it takes a few seconds for the translator to repeat what the speaker has said.

Make that same idea work for you. Imagine that your son’s words have to come through a pair of imaginary headphones. While you’re waiting, you will have time to prepare your own “translation.”

So instead of losing your temper, say, “I can hear that you’re angry, but you may not speak to me this way.”

Remember, teens who speak respectfully at home are more likely to do so in school, as well.

Make an effort to spend time with your son. It’s a fact: Teens don’t want to end their relationships with their parents as they grow older. They just want them to change as they grow. Spending time with their parents is one of teens’ biggest priorities, but they can’t do it alone.

Make spending time with your teen one of your biggest priorities. You can:

• Take five … or fifteen. Devote five or fifteen minutes a day to your son. Give him all of your attention--and let him choose what you do. He may want to talk about something that’s bothering him, watch a TV show together or go for a walk. The important thing is that you focus on your son.

• Show an interest. Talking about what your son is doing at school is a great first step. Attend his games and performances. Go to the parent-teacher conference. Being there shows your son how important he is to you more than your words can.

• Be friendly. Make an effort to get to know your son’s friends. Offer to drive a group of boys to the movies or the mall. Make your home a place where they can feel comfortable “hanging out.” You will get to know the people important to your son and be able to know he’s in a safe place.

Encourage your teen to use values when making decisions. These are the years when your son is starting to think about the values he’ll use to guide him through his life. That means he’s going to do some questioning – including questioning you. The way you respond to questions can help your son through this important decision-making process.

You can help your son clarify his values as he makes decisions if you:

• Are available. Let your son know that he can always come to you to talk about his thoughts and ask questions.

• Ask questions. Teens often aren’t sure what they think. Try to ask questions without coming across as a prosecuting attorney! “What makes you say that?” “Can you see the other side of that issue?”

• Expect your son to point out inconsistencies in your own actions. If you talk about healthy living, but still smoke, your son is going to point it out!

• Decide which values are too important for compromise. You shouldn’t compromise on issues of safety and health; however, try to worry less about other issues where you don’t feel so strongly.

Are you helping your teen avoid the senior slump? Ask any teacher and you’ll learn that “senior slump” affects most seniors. They don’t want to study. They don’t want to come to class on time. In fact, they don’t want to come to class at all!

Answer yes or no to the questions below to find out if you are helping your teen avoid the senior slump:

• Have you talked with your son about why his grades can’t drop too much? Colleges can (and do) take back their offers of admission!

• Are you making sure your son’s attendance doesn’t slip?

• Have you planned some fun senior activities with other parents that will give your son a reason to want to stay active?

• Are you giving your son a chance to have adult experience – interning in an office or volunteering?

• Are your trying to relax and enjoy your son? In a few months, he may not be living with you.

How well are you doing? Each yes means you’re helping your son stay focused his senior year. For each no answer, try that idea.

The 2008-2009 Parent Annual Fund is off to a great start with over $50,000 in contributions received thus far! You should have received your mailings at home, and may have heard from a member of our Parents’ Advisory Council. On behalf of the entire La Salle community, we thank everyone who has already supported this worthy cause.

Gifts to this fund support the Professional Development Fund, used by our faculty

and administration for continuing education. Last year, fifty-one members of our staff took

advantage of this fund, seeking advanced degrees and certifications. The continued yearly

growth of this fund has allowed La Salle to consistently attract and maintain some of

the best and brightest from the teaching profession. Your generosity benefits the dedicated

men and women of La Salle, and for this they are greatly appreciative!

Special thanks to the members of the Parents’ Advisory Council, whose continued leadership and dedication to the Parent Annual Fund has allowed this initiative to prosper:

Father/Son BowlingOver fifty fathers and sons participated in this year’s Father/Son Bowling Day. Mike Schluth, the chairman of this event, reported that an excellent time was had by all attendees. They enjoyed a great set of games, some very spirited competition, and some excellent 50/50 raffle sales. Thanks again to Mike for your time and dedication to ensuring a good time for all dads and sons.

Father/Son Baseball OutingDetails are now finalized for what is typically a sellout event. Keep an eye out for registration coming in the mail. The game will be Sunday, April 26, 2009 featuring the Orioles vs. Texas Rangers. Morning Mass at La Salle at 9:00 am, followed by coach bus service to reserved seating in the stadium for a 1:00 pm game, and a trip to the Inner Harbor afterwards for more fun make for an exciting day. Don’t miss this opportunity to share America’s favorite pastime with your sons. The tickets and space are limited, so reserve early as possible to save your seats. Bring your sons and their friends for an unforgettable day. This is usually a sell-out event….don’t delay! Feel free to contact Dave Lagner at [email protected] for any questions. By the way, the tickets are cheaper this year at $57.00/person. Register now….don’t delay!

St. Vincent’s Soup KitchenThe calendar has been filling up with volunteers. Thank you to all who have provided their time to help out at St. Vincent’s. I know they count on us to make the program successful. Lent is a perfect time to give of yourself, so please register for a Saturday or Sunday.

Every weekend through the end of the school year, the Men of La Salle will continue our service to those less fortunate in our community, by helping to prepare and serve meals at St. Vincent’s . The Soup Kitchen is located at 109 East Price Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The project is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to spend some time together in service to the needy in our community, while at the same time setting an example to be able to give back. We need volunteers to prepare food every Saturday and serve every Sunday between 9:30 and 11:30 am and 12:30 and 2:30 pm. No experience is needed, just a desire to spend time together and help others. Please go online to sign up and help make a difference.

Dear Fellow Fathers,

With all the events and activities going on, it is hard to believe that there are only two meetings left for the Men of La Salle. To make sure that all fathers received the information as “hard copies” and not just in electronic format, we decided to do a mailer for several of our events. You should have received the mailing, which contained four flyers. One of them was a Commitment Form for the Men of La Salle. I urge you to take a look at the form, fill it out, and volunteer for an event or two. Please take note of the number of activities we schedule to enhance your time with your boys over his four years at La Salle College High School. I would ask you to consider volunteering or Chairing some of the events to give you a better understanding and appreciation for our purpose and mission. Fill it out and bring it to the next meeting or return it by mail. We welcome your support and thank you for all you do for your boys.

April’s meeting will be one you don’t want to miss. So many fathers have approached me recently regarding contacts and employment opportunities. In this very difficult and trying economic time, we felt the best type of meeting would be a business card exchange to help all dads network and open-up every resource. We are a very fortunate community in that we all have each other’s best interests in mind and so many fathers in varied professions. To that end, we will have no formal speaker, just time to network and let other fathers know what we do or what we are looking for. Last year’s meeting was a success, and in this economy, I think this year’s will be even more successful.

In this Holiest of times as Lent draws to an end and Easter is upon us, let us please remember to thank the Lord for all He has given to us, in particular, our boys, and families, as well as the teachers, coaches, and administration that help shape our boys into young men and future role models. Have a blessed and safe Easter Holiday.

Sincerely yours,

Paul M. Benyovszky ’78 President Men of La Salle

Spring is right around the corner and thoughts of cookouts, good weather, and baseball come to mind.

That also means it’s time for the annual Men of La Salle Father/Son Baseball Trip.

This event has always been one of the most popular events of the school calendar as it provides a wonderful opportunity to spend a day with your son/sons and fellow fathers and students from La Salle.

Once again, the Baltimore Orioles have accommodated La Salle with one of the best games available. We will travel to Camden Yards in Baltimore on Sunday, April 26, 2009 to take in the Orioles against the Texas Rangers. Game time is 1:30 pm and the day will begin with Mass at La Salle at 9:00 am followed by the bus trip to Baltimore. After the game, time will be allocated to carouse the Inner Harbor for post-game activities.

We have secured 125 tickets on what we expect will be a total sellout. This is on a first come/first serve basis. Payment must be received within two weeks of your reservation or your tickets will be made available to those on the waiting list. Fathers, sons, uncles, cousins, grandfathers are welcome – not to mention any mothers who would like to spend the day with their sons.

The cost is $57 per person, which includes the ticket and transportation. Payment should be made payable to the “Men of La Salle’ and forwarded to Dave Lagner ([email protected]).

Please complete the attached form and return it with your check to: Dave Lagner, 509 Hamilton Road, Lower Gwynedd, PA 19002

The Verdict Is Inby Betty Field

Congratulations to the La Salle Mock Trial team for advancing to the Montgomery County finals. After months of dedicated work on Sundays and weekdays, the team came in second place to Haverford School by a heartbreaking 6-5 decision. The Montgomery County President Judge and the distinguished panel of eleven jurors, all practicing attorneys, had high praise for our team’s professionalism and courtroom demeanor. The senior members of the Mock Trial team are: Patrick Gavin, Jonathan Wilt, Nicholas Rizzutto, Robert Long, Mark Kinslow, and Matthew Schmitz – a class act.

Special thanks to the coaching staff:

The team had an appearance, or two, by T.J. McCarrick ‘08, a former Mock Trial member who is now assisting the Forensics Group. Ray Shay ’00 was also generous in coming to a “dress rehearsal” to provide valuable comments. Brother Renee Sterner did the same. The program was blessed with the help of many generous people, a hallmark of La Salle College High School.

Speech and Debateby Raymond T. Shay ‘00

La Salle College High School played host to the National Forensic League (NFL) Valley Forge District Tournament held March 13-14, 200 and received many compliments from coaches, judges, and students about the personnel and facilities at La Salle.

La Salle’s Speech and Debate Team took first place in the Team Sweepstakes at the District Tournament narrowly defeating Holy Ghost Preparatory and Pennsbury High School. At the tournament, La Salle qualified eight students to the NFL National Finals in Birmingham, AL, which is the most NFL qualifiers La Salle has had in one year since 1981. To qualify to the National Finals, a student must place in the top two of his event at the district tournament.

Congratulations to La Salle’s 2009 NFL qualifiers:

Jim Benischeck ‘10 and Josh Thorn ‘10 (First Place in Policy Debate)

Brian Higgins ‘10 and Greg Porter ‘10 (Second Place in Policy Debate)

Sean Janda ’10 (First Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate)

Frank Necrasz ’09 (First Place in the Student Congress Senate)

J.C. Wilt ’09 (Second Place in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking)

Eric Stone ’11 (Second Place in Humorous Interpretation of Literature)

All eight qualifiers will represent La Salle and the Valley Forge District at the NFL National Finals June 13-20, 2009 in Birmingham, AL.

The Beat Goes Onby Joe Moroney ’10 and Brian McElroy ’10

As Spring draws nearer and the weather begins to heat up, so too does La Salle’s Music Department. Under the direction of Mr. Joe Vettori and Mr. Joe Ciccimaro ‘57, the Music Department ended the first semester of the 2008-2009 school year with a fantastic concert, featuring many of the schools groups such as Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Freshmen Band, Advanced Band, and Honors Advanced Band. In addition, the Honors Advanced Band and Competition band continued the unique La Salle tradition of performing for an enthusiastic student body.

On February 7, 2009, the La Salle Music Department held its annual Band Social, the biggest fundraiser for the program. Once again, the event was a great success thanks to the hard work of the parents and students involved with the set up and entertainment at the Band Social. The main attraction was the Fifth Period Band, who performed dozens of songs for the parents and guests of the Music Department. The event also marked the public debuts of both the Competition Band and Lab Band. Both bands performed very well, exciting the audience for future competitions.

The music program continued another tradition with the annual Jazz Assembly during Catholic Schools Week. Every year, the Fifth Period Band as well as the Competition Band plays for the rest of the student body. The students greet the bands with enthusiasm and support, often picking out crowd favorites. This year, senior saxophonist Ryan Lonergan and freshman trumpet Nick Owsik were cheered on during solo performances. The assembly is one of the most enjoyable of the year for all involved.

The Fifth Period Band, also known as the Honors Advanced Band, has been working very hard throughout the months of February and March. Directed by Joseph Vettori, this band is comprised of some of the most talented musicians La Salle has to offer and plays very challenging music. The Fifth Period Band is also looking forward to its annual New York City Trip on March 25, 2009 in which they play for the students of De La Salle Academy and enjoy one of the best Broadway shows the Big Apple has to offer.

This year, La Salle had seven students make the All-Catholic Band. They were seniors Matt Roland on mallets and Tom Maher on trumpet, juniors Pat LaFata and Joe Moroney on alto saxophone, Dean Ripley on trombone and Ryan McElroy on trumpet, along with sophomore Chris McElroy on trombone. The band was selected through auditions, which were held at Roman Catholic, with hundreds of students from all of the Catholic schools in southeastern Pennsylvania competing for about eighty spots. They performed in a concert held at Cardinal O’Hara under the direction of the distinguished trumpet player Matt Gallagher. The All-Catholic Band played songs ranging from marches to Gershwin. Senior Tom Maher, as 1st chair trumpet, was featured in numerous solos. After two more practices at Bishop Shanahan and one more at the Kimmel Center, the All-Catholic Band will play at the Kimmel Center in a concert to celebrate American music.

Every year, La Salle’s spring musical takes center stage. This year’s show, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” was no different. As with every show, La Salle’s Music Department provided the theater with a full Broadway-style orchestra. Under the direction of senior Tom Maher, the pit orchestra worked tirelessly to make this musical as successful as possible. As if learning the exact score of a Broadway musical (usually played by professionals) was not hard enough, the orchestra had to synch itself with both the singers and dancers. Not intimidated by these challenges, the band pulled together. Entering the week before the musical’s opening, the orchestra was ready for opening night.

In addition, La Salle’s Lab Band, directed by Dennis Wasko, has been working to prepare more than five difficult songs. After its debut at the Band Social, the Lab Band performed alongside the Competition Band at Penn Charter High School.

February also marked the start of competition for La Salle’s Competition Band. Beginning in November, the Competition band has worked three days a week to perfect five extremely challenging songs. After two competitions so far, the Competition Band has continued La Salle’s tradition of musical excellence by earning Superior ratings in both the North Penn and Upper Moreland Jazz Festivals. Standout musicians include trumpeter Nick Owsik, who earned a Best Soloist award at North Penn, and the trombone section (comprised of Chris McElroy, Dean Ripley, Bill Torres, Eric Stone, Dan Goodwin, and JC Wilt), who won Best Trombones at Upper Moreland. The Competition Band looks to keep up this success in its three remaining competitions, earnestly refining its challenging repertoire.

Semifinals 03/13/09 Face Off Circle La Salle 2 vs. Archbishop Ryan 1 (OT)

Finals 03/21/09 Spectrum La Salle 6 vs. Father Judge 2

La Salle defeated Father Judge at the Spectrum to capture their second straight Flyers Cup in what will be the last high school hockey game played at the historic venue. Sophomore Dan Merenich scored four goals and junior goalie Gabe Antoni turned away 23 shots in route to the victory.

In the first period, La Salle (15-0-4) outshot the Crusaders by a margin of 16-3 and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Father Judge took the lead on two quick second period scores, but Merenich responded with back-to-back goals within three minutes to put the Explorers ahead for good. Freshman Drew Smolcynski followed with a third period goal and the Explorers maintained control.

Despite having eleven new players from last year’s Flyers Cup and State Championship Team, La Salle was the top seed in the tournament for the third straight year. Congratulations to coach Wally Muehlbronner and his AAA Varsity Championship Team.
