We were in our mid-twenties, newly married and still growing into our adult skin. At the closing on the house the attorney was going over all of the paperwork with us. Most of it seemed dry and, quite honestly, a little over my head. But then he said something that is as clear to me today as it was 30 years ago. “Blah, blah, blah … and then it happened “and this loan will be paid off January 15 th 2014.” “2014!” It was late 1983 and 2014 was 30 years into the future … and I was only 23 years old myself! Our new mortgage’s payoff was longer into the future than I had been alive. I almost fainted in that attorney’s office. I was scared out of my wits and almost ran screaming from the room. The point is ... the time did pass. We have just completed the season of Advent. The season of waiting and watching and yearning for the future to come. So as we begin this new year, if you find yourself waiting for something that is to come, waiting for some future event, possibly even fearful for some future event, I offer this learned-the- hard-way life lesson. Live today. Live in this moment. Let this day be your focus and let God have the future … and whatever it will hold. Jesus pretty much said the same thing in Matthew 6:31 -34: “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Calendar pages will flip, days will pass and events will come to be; and our Faithful God will be right there in the midst of it … providing every step of the way. 2014 JANUARY Issue 1

Happy 2014!

Is there a part of you, as there is a part of me, that says, “2014?!? How did that happen?” I know, I know, I am showing my age by admitting that time just flies by for me now. But, whether we are ready or not … it is here … another new year is before us.

2014 holds significance for me that not every new year does. In late 1983, Scott and I purchased our first house. We were in our mid-twenties, newly married and still growing into our adult skin. At the closing on the house the attorney was going over all of the paperwork with us. Most of it seemed dry and, quite honestly, a little over my head. But then he said something that is as clear to me today as it was 30 years ago. “Blah, blah, blah … and then it happened “and this loan will be paid off January 15th 2014.”

“2014!” It was late 1983 and 2014 was 30 years into the future … and I was only 23 years old myself! Our new mortgage’s payoff was longer into the future than I had been alive. I almost fainted in that attorney’s office. I was scared out of my wits and almost ran screaming from the room. Well, here we are in 2014. That house was sold and the mortgage was paid off in 1986. Since then, we have secured other mortgages with other payoff dates and we have paid them off as well. The point is ... the time did pass.

We have just completed the season of Advent. The season of waiting and watching and yearning for the future to come. So as we begin this new year, if you find yourself waiting for something that is to come, waiting for some future event, possibly even fearful for some future event, I offer this learned-the-hard-way life lesson. Live today. Live in this moment. Let this day be your focus and let God have the future … and whatever it will hold. Jesus pretty much said the same thing in Matthew 6:31-34: “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Calendar pages will flip, days will pass and events will come to be; and our Faithful God will be right there in the midst of it … providing every step of the way.

With transforming hope,

Claudia

The winter solstice, the shortest daylight day of the year in the northern hemisphere arrived on December 21st. It is one of my favorite days because now the days start getting longer and we can start thinking about spring and summer. However, despite the longer days, the coldest days of winter are still ahead of us in January and February. As we ring in the New Year on January 1st it will mark the half way point in the WHWM year that runs from July through June. We are on a good pace to exceed 200 deliveries again this heating season. Here are the numbers as of December 24th.

Many thanks to all who have supported the wood ministry this year with your time, talent, chainsaws, gas, oil, trucks, trailers, funds, and most importantly your camaraderie.

Want to join the Wood Ministry?

If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our wood ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at 804-357-5504 or [email protected] or Dick Lear at 703-855-9831, [email protected]. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family’s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our wood ministry with your time & talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas & oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group.

Step lightly through the coming year Whatever it may bring, Have courage in the Winter storms And reach out to the Spring. And catch the sunshine when you can, It lifts the heart and mind, Be cheerful in the darker days Though life may seem unkind. Step bravely when the road is steep And climb the highest hill, Then looking up towards the stars Your hopes and dreams fulfill. Still cherish faith, and love and joy, Dispelling doubt and fear, Tomorrow beckons, look ahead, Step lightly through the year! — Iris Hesselden

“...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

— by Terry Stead

A New Year has once again begun, which usually means we want to start afresh and hopefully do things differently this year. We have been rushing around both before and after Christmas, enjoying the company of family and friends and stressing out about all sorts of things which have nothing to do with Christ’s birth. As children we counted down the days until that wonderful morning when we would awaken to presents and to the fun and laughter of all that day brings. As adults, we count down the days, madly baking and buying last minute presents and cards to send to our many family and friends. After the celebrations have finished, we cleaned up and wondered why we went to all that trouble, as we are left tired and flat.

The above passage from Isaiah points out to us that if we have faith and hope in the Lord then we are able to draw on the strength and peace that only God can give as we start this New Year. I used to think that this passage was just for saints and those who spent all their time working for the Lord, but over the years, I have come to realize that it applies to all of us, no matter the reason for our tiredness and listlessness. It could be that we have become weary from the days of endless stress at work or at home and all we feel like doing is crawling into our own shells and shutting the rest of the world out. Illness or family tensions leave us exhausted. It could be through a feeling of loneliness or perhaps the opposite – too many people crowding in and making demands on us, that we simply want to stand up and say “enough is enough”. That is when God wraps us in His loving arms and lifts up our heads so we can face another day.

Prayer: Loving One, we awake to this new year, knowing that You will be beside us and alive in us each moment of every day. As this year unfolds give us the strength and the peace that we need to keep going so that we may live a life of joy as You so wish us to have. Thank you, Lord, that every moment is a new beginning, not just the start of a new year and help us to soar on wings of eagles when we become weary.

— Amen

“Even in old age (the godly) will still produce fruit and be vital and green” (Psalm 92:14 TLB).

Recently, I read a thought provoking quotation by Theodore Roosevelt:

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

The quote seemed to say to me,

“Don’t be looking at what the other folks are doing. Just look to Me. I have something for you to do today.”

Getting older and experiencing all the various stages of “body rot” sometimes causes us to wonder if we can still be fruitful. Try as we may, we will never fully stop the inevitable - getting old and frail - unless the Lord takes us home suddenly. We can exercise, get cosmetic surgery, take vitamins galore, but that won’t delay the guarantee that our life on earth will come to an end. God has chosen the day and time He will take us home.

Meanwhile, God has things for us to do:

1. We can worship Him and pray for our family, believers and unbelievers, leaders and friends.

2. We can tell someone every week what Christ is doing for us, about an answered prayer or a special promise or encouragement He gave to you. If you told one person every week about Jesus, you would have shared the gospel with 52 people in one year. You could do that by letter, by email or in conversations.

3. We can encourage someone each day - we can brighten someone’s day. No one has ever had too much encouragement.

4. We can smile. It is so much nicer to be friendly than grumpy.

5. We can serve. My husband’s Aunt Norma is 86 and still does mending for people who aren’t able to do it themselves.

6. We can give. The temptation to hoard the resources God has given us is always there but God wants us to give liberally.

7. I encourage you to ask God what He would like you to do for Him today and tomorrow. He will answer you. Be on the alert for opportunities.

Father, thank You that You have something for us to do and to share - even in old age. Cause us to keep looking for opportunities to serve You and others. Amen.

Happy New Year Girls and Boys,

For this new year, God has pointed me to use two parts of verses coming from Galatians 3:27 and 5:13. "for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Serve one another in Love." Now, most of you know that Dads/Husbands always try to please Moms/Wives with the best gifts possible for Christmas and this is stepping out of the true meaning of Christmas, just for a minute. Anyway, I ordered Ms. Penny what I thought was the most beautiful sweater, at the most reasonable price possible. It was navy blue and had a gold owl on the front. I thought it was perfect except, when it arrived it was not a sweater… It was a sweat shirt and it was not made in the USA… It came from Hong Kong. Boy was I disappointed. But you know, my loving wife never let on any disappointment. She gave me a hug and kiss and said it was beautiful. Now, I tell you this story because the Friday before Christmas while I was volunteering at Retreat Hospital Hospice unit, I had Mrs. G. in 542 and she had her husband and three daughters with her. I asked her husband what color did she like and he said, "blue". Well, I did not have any blue lapafgans knitted by the Angels of Rouzie’s or Beaverdam but, I had this beautiful green one. Well, I took it into 542 and in unison all of the ladies said, "oh that is the most beautiful color lapafgan I have ever seen". They all wanted to touch it and hold it. Mrs. G. was most vocal of all. It was the first time I have heard her speak and she was so very thankful. Last Friday, when I went in to see Mrs. G. she had declined markedly so, but she had that green lapafgan clutched in her hand and her husband said she would not let it go. You just never know when some one is affected or is blessed by what one does.

Have a wonderful 2014 and know you are loved.
