Our First Starfish By Nathan Decker
“A man watched as a boy walked down the beach picking up starfish and throwing them back into the sea. ‘What are you doing? It won’t change the world. You’re wasting your time. You can’t save them all. It doesn’t matter.’ The boy picked up a starfish and threw it back into the sea. ‘It matters to this one. It matters to me.”
It wasn’t just about the holes in the ceiling. That’s how it started. One year ago, City Manager Amanda Jarratt asked me to go see the house on Bolling Street. It was the one with red asbestos siding, a front porch weathered and worn with multiple layers of paint peeling, a back porch barely connected to the house. I knocked on the door, and for the first time, I met Mr. Evans. He invited me inside, showed me the holes from the tree that had fallen two years prior. Holes in the ceiling with insulation still strewn all over the floor of his kitchen, more was dangling just above his bed room. In the back room, windows had been shattered, water damage had ruined part of the floor, and in general it was a wreck. We spoke, shook left hands (his right was paralyzed), and that began our church’s journey into helping the housing crisis in the city of Franklin. Amanda had said there were over 200 homes in disrepair. We said we would take them one at a time, starting with Mr. Evans’. Little did we know how invested we would become. It wasn’t just about the holes in the ceiling. From the beginning of demo day, folks in our church got involved. People were awakened and energized to help. Even non-church folks helped! This was something blessed, something wholesome, something kind, something spiritual. It changed us as much as it changed Mr. Evans’ home. I’ll never forget listening as Kent Stephenson and Mr. Evans laughed with one another about jokes. Or that holy moment when Betty Brett-Smith shared with him about her mother passing away, and offering him some of her kitchenware. At first it was a project on a house, but God didn’t stop there. It wasn’t just about the holes in the ceiling, it became about the holes in our relationships with one another. We weren’t just doing ministry for or to Mr. Evans. He paid for some of the supplies. He instructed us on better ways to hang sheetrock or lay tile. He was a partner in ministry with us. And he became our friend. A friend we would not allow to be without power in the middle of a cold storm. A friend we would advocate for to get a new ramp and floor leveled. A friend we would grieve when we heard he had passed away. I’ll be honest. I was worried that some folks would come back and say it was a waste. A whole year working on a house for a man who died just as we were finishing – but that’s not what I heard. Instead I heard folks say, “I’m so glad I got to meet Mr. Evans.” “What a blessing to make sure his last year he was surrounded by activity and smiles.” “I’ll never forget Mr. Evans.” It wasn’t just about the holes in the ceiling. It was about finding salvation in each other through the shared relationship.
“The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!’” -Jesus in Matthew 25:40
When we get a new home from the city, Pastor Nathan will put out announcements about needs and talents for the next “mission house.” May God bless our relationships as we work together for we are #bettertogether.

A few months and newsletters have passed and yet we still struggle with posting a calendar of events for High Street UMC. Many of the meetings or events scheduled for July and August have been cancelled, postponed or delayed. Please review the calendars at the end of the newsletter and we will keep you updated when there are changes.
Bishop Sharma Lewis moved the VAUMC into Stage 2 as of June 21st. A new
handbook has been created call the Technical Assistance Manual (TAM) that outlines all of the requirements for in person worship and gatherings. For the latest information about the plan and requirements in Stage 2, please go to www.vaumc.org/return.
For now, High Street UMC will continue to post online Sunday School and Worship Services on Sundays as well as daily devotionals. The services and devotionals can be found on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/High.Street.United.Methodist.23851/. You can also log onto High Street’s website www.highstreetumcva.org and select the Facebook link. You do not need a Face-book account to access these services.

METHODIST MARKETPLACE at High Street United Methodist Church
Saturday, November 14, 2020
Don't miss the delicious food, fun and fellowship!!
Greetings High Street church family! I bring you much love from the United Methodist Women. It's been a interesting few months to say the least. Our UMW - like all the other groups - have not met during the quarantine period. With summer time here, we are on our "summer break" now. Enjoy your July and August time and we will start back up meeting again in September. As a little suggestion....take time while you are at home to make some crafts, bake/freeze goodies, put up pickles, can veggies, knit, etc for our upcoming Methodist Marketplace. It will be here before you know it!! The next UMW Executive Board meeting will be on August 25, 2020 at 10 AM in the church library. The Morning Circle will meet in the fellowship hall at 10 AM on September 14, 2020. (We would normally meet on the 1st Monday but it is Labor Day.) The Evening Circle will meet in the fellowship hall at 5:30 PM on September 28, 2020. ALL women of High Street are invited to join us at either meeting for fun and fellowship. Blessing from UMW! Keep in mind…helpful ideas from Jennifer Stephenson
When you send in Honorarium or Memorial gifts, whether it is to High Street or anywhere, make sure you write the name of the person to be remembered or honored, your name (the way you would like it listed or sent to the family, including salutations of: Mr. ,Mrs., Ms. or Miss) and your address. If you have a name that is not gender specific, let the charity know the salutation to prevent guessing.
Honorariums and Memorials are a wonderful way to honor or remember someone in a meaningful way. Birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions are a wonderful opportunity to give such a special gift. Often, you can specify a specific fund within the Church, unless a family has a specific purpose for memorial monies. Feel free to call the church office for information.
When mailing a get well/thinking of you card to someone in the hospital, put the patient’s home address in the return address spot on the envelope. That way if they have a short hospital visit, your card will be forwarded by the hospital to their home rather than back to you!
Let’s stay in touch…..it means so much!
As many of you know I love to write notes, send cards, text, make phone calls, send emails and stay in touch on social media. It means so much to me. To stay in touch, I need to have my friends and family’s current info.
Just like me, our Church office needs to keep in touch as well. It doesn’t mean we are going to bother you, but from time to time we need to get important information to you. We can use the One Call Tell all method if we have your correct phone numbers. We can send so much by email now, if we have your most current email address. Of course, we can still mail things out, but we need your current address. When your kids go to college or move, it is nice for us to know where they are. Life happens and we move and change, but make sure you let us know.
On that note, let the Church Office know if someone is in the hospital, sick, going through a tough time, or just needs to be on the prayer chain. We would rather two or three folks call to update us than not get an update at all. You are important to all of us, so let’s try to stay in touch a little better!

FORGOTTEN TREASURES
Typically you hear the phrase “Hidden Treasures” but that refers to something valuable that is hard to find. Most everyone at High Street UMC knows we have a library, but I think we tend to forget what a great resource it is. Did you know that our church library holds well over 1000 books for all ages? I think you would be amazed at the many “treasures” we have to
support our faith journey and serve the educational and spiritual needs of our church family. When you have time, I encourage you to check out our library. We are in the process of creating a complete listing of all the books in the library for easy access.
