INTRODUCTIONMy name is Hannes Grebin. I’m a product designer currently living and working freelance in Berlin and as you may see in the variety of projects and fields I’ve worked so far, I consider myself as a creative generalist.

FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN

After some years in business and struggling with the right perception, I believe, that design as a process for creating only something 'beautiful', turns out inflationary. In most cases this would end up in hasty L’art Pour L’art, some fancy stuff for fancy people, which wouldn’t make any further impact on the world or the broader public. Not unless it's based on a sustainable foun-dation of mastery, originality, meaning and above all value for the user.

From this perspective I see design as a powerful strategy to condense a whole universe of research, backgrounds, functionality, emotions, people, vision etc. into a well considered, appealing and comprehensible package, thus creating a real and lasting user experience.

And by taking Form Follows Function for granted I even assume that every design development would become aesthetic automatically, if all those aspects are compiled with a sophisti-cated, logical and sustainable attitude.

Thus instead of some short-sighted concept covered by a fashionable surface, I would always emphasise a holistic design-thinking approach.

MUTUAL GROWTH

I’m permanent beta1, I believe, that we are never finished with learning and developing ourselves. That's why I try to improve myself on a daily basis, share my knowledge and learn from others in return.

In my opinion this kind of caring beginner’s mindset is an authentic and sustainable way to live a fullfilling life.

Therefore in my daily work I assist my clients with my advice, my skills and my honesty. And by taking full responsibility for my respective part of a project, I help them gaining the required space to focus exclusively on their thoughtful decisions and on their unique products and services.

As a result this creates high value for their customers and leads consequently into flour-ishing and symbiotic customer relations and beyond all that, I think, it makes the world a better place.

I hope this portfolio gives you some insight into my common creative workflows. So please don’t hesitate to contact me, if you have any further questions. Looking forward to speak with you in person.

HELLO

Hannes Grebin | *1980product designerBerlin

“Good design has no ego. It’s happy to be invisible.”

1) PERMANENT BETA — I love this expression. Heard it the very first time in a talk by Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn in Secrets Of Silicon Valley on www.creativelive.com — where he points out that like all Google products are planned as a permanent beta version, we'll always remain work-in-progress ourselves.

CLIENTS Symbiotic PartnershipsThese are some clients I’ve worked so far whether freelancing or in an agency. I love working in many different fields, as this is always challenging, you can learn so much and stay flexible in your daily work and thinking. I’m convinced that all projects would always benefit from this interdisciplinary working attitude. Nevertheless it’s important to me to take part in the

whole development process from ideation to production, to react and adjust immediately if necessary. When working with companies I consider them as my design partners, collaborating as close as possible in all stages of the design development, short-cutting learning curves by swapping ideas with employees, knowing that we have all reached mastery in our particular field of work.

Digital Tool PaletteThis shows a collection of programmes I’m using in my daily work. My common workflow starts with thinking on paper, multiple revisions of scribbled ideas while brainstro-ming and research. Then defining selected ideas by creating semi-realistic renderings in Photoshop or Illustrator for first evaluation. Later using Rhino3D for NURBS-construction and Modo for polygonal/SubD

modelling and translating back and forth via TSplines or PowerSolids. After defining the final designs we would develop the required 3D-data for final production or manufacturing which could range from CNC-data for moulds, STL-files for 3D-printing, print patterns for balloon-welding, 2D-vectors for laser-cutting to technical drawings or even 3D-artwork for lenticular lenses

Idea Selling PicturesWorking on many different projects over the last years I consider effective visualisation the No.1 tool for explaining and above all selling your vision to your audience and customers to finally making the deal.So whether it’s an architectural competition or your startup needs a convincing product visualisation, a proper picture is definitely worth a thousand words.

Working hybridly with 3D and 2D programmes togeth-er we would decide whether to model and render ev-erything completely for convincing realism or rather shortcut time and work on certain details by retouch ing them in Photoshop or working mixed media.

1 ESCADA - “TRAVEL” Event visualisation, 11 windows & main hall, Fashion Week Berlin, KADEWE, Berlin

2 ROLAND - 4 SEASONS, 4 WINDOWS window designs, visualisation and design e valuations of a seasonal decoration strategy for all ROLAND shops

A Playground for DreamsThose are 2 projects I was working on with Markus Mahren, creative director of Escada and former cre-ative director of Hugo Boss and Karstadt. The left project was all about “Travel”, a special event during Berlin Fashionweek taking place in KaDeWe, which included a decoration concept for all of their 10 windows and the main hall.

On the right side you see examples for a seasonal shopping window strategy for roland, subbrand of dEicHmann which would work for all of their different stores. What I love about VM is the great storytelling potential and the broad conceptional freedom, when animating products with their companies’ visions.↗ markusmahren.com

Another Dimension of BrandingI got into inflatables by accident. Do you see the me-ga-bra in the images? I was hired for the construction part and evaluating of the surface area and volume, which is crucial when it comes to helium balloons, since you have some restrictions concerning the ma-terial's weight vs. the lift capabilities of helium. This is why construction programmes are so benefitial and the only way to go, especially for precise modelling,

constructive parts and defined print patterns for later production. Within the last 2 years into balloons I in-troduced new plugins and developed certain techniques to enhance the whole production and design process, that we are now able to achieve really complex shapes covered with photographic or realistically rendered textures on a high-tech material, thus providing a huge creative potential.

New Identity for SAT1-News

V-Sion, a specialised agency for creating corporate designs for various TV formats asked me to collab-orate on their redesign of the SAT1-news studio and basically come up with a smart news desk solution that would cover several moderation scenarios and would adapt to the overall new studio design. Many revisions and models later the SAT1 executives choose

the final design out of 3 proposals. Afterwards I built the whole construction in close collaboration with the manufacturers, finally providing the required 3D-data for the CNC-mill. I'm pretty happy with the final product, remembering the overall professional interaction of all participat-ing people especially within this really tight deadline.

Your Products Are Your Best AdvertisementIn the overall design development process I’m also focused on a systemic and comprehensible branding strategy for the respective service or product. By creating a deliberate product that is easy and in-spiring to use, you create serious value for the cus-tomer. But with an additional effort you could implement the complex universe of a brand as the ‘soul’ of a product, serving as the user's reliable companion.

I’m convinced that this holistic design approach is always highly sustainable. It creates longterm trust with the customer and therefore an extraordinary bond to the brand itself, as it implies the most convincing social marketing tool out there — word-of-mouth rec-ommendation. Genuine and valuable products are key, especially in times of Amazon reviews, Youtube and tech related blogs.

A Hybrid Workflow For Full Control Over The Final DesignsThese are 3 different projects that should illustrate the advantages of a hybrid analogue-digital workflow, dissolving all limitations of the shape finding and lat-er manufacturing process. As shown in the images I would go into manual mod-el-making for intuitive sculpting, then using state-of-the-art digital techniques like 3D-scanning, 3D-print-

ing, laser-cutting, CNC-prototyping etc. to convert everything into processable 3D-data.For further development I would rely on several polyg-onal-modeling and NURBS applications being able to exchange 3D-data back and forth between them, en-suring an fast, intuitive and barrier-free design pro-cess with full control over the final designs.

CONSTRUCTION 1 GERMAN REUNIFICATION MONUMENT competition presentation and further construction and design finding process; ground and side views

Design Development With Control & PrecisionThis project, which won the competition “German Re-unification Monument” in Berlin, is a collaboration between well-known German dance choreographer Sasha Waltz and Stuttgart-based branding agency Milla&Partner. As its title “Citizens in Movement” im-plies, it’s a 50m long pivot-mounted bowl that is ac-cessible to the public and would tilt at a certain weight.

I took part in the further realisation phase, where we had to deal with a bunch of restrictions that derived from preserving the historical fundament. This resulted in a lot of renderings and revised ver-sions of the 3D-data and physical model to finally come up with the definite construction.

Setting A SparkI consider a comprehensible and intelligent logotype as one of the crucial steps in defining a brand. From a functional perspective it should work like an emotional seed, ensouling mere objects with the brand’s deep-rooted story and philosophy — as a heraldic sign radiates the origin and values of a high-born family or a simple cross would condense the whole Christian church into a single icon.

In addition I prefer a sustainable development of logos by expanding their potential further usability, still trying to keep them functional and timeless by avoiding all fashionability. Or as Saint-Exupery would state:“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

Fundamental Design Research / Design ArtIn my conceptional work I use design rather as an own complex language to dissect sociological contexts or confront perception-related questions, coming up with totally new design-related perspectives.Nevertheless I consider the projects below rather as placeholders for what could be really possible in the “Gray Zone” between philosophy, art and design.I recently gave a talk and workshop on how to imple-

ment strategies and techniques from graphic design into products and 3D artwork, since currently there is not much interesting going on, due to a lack of inter-disciplinary knowledge exchange. I believe that an applied, interdisciplinary design-art approach could be in fact some profound resource for a serious change in design regarding its experimental and explorative qualities.

A Contemporary Appearance For The Middle EastAfter a business trip to Dubai I quickly came up with ideas and design strategies for an independent con-temporary Arabic design identity. Actually I always wondered why in spite of the large heritage of Arabic patterns and traditional crafts-manship all current mayor architectural and design projects in the Middle East have been mostly assem-bled from European and American design imports

— a condition that can be only explained with a lack of a local design education and related resources. In fact this project should emphasize the relevance of a serious knowledge transfer which would estab-lish a sustainable Arabic design education, over time leading into a self-supplying design infrastructure. I could even imagine the same approach for other emerging markets like Russia, India or China.
