  • Light as a Design forceEvaluation of light in space designThermal baths at Tattapani, IndiaThesis Project

The thesis explored the role of natural light in space design as a parameterduring the evolution of the design rather than as an afterthought of the process. The premise focused on compiling and analyzing precedents to study the factors which made a physical space into a metaphysical one. Materiality being a very significant factor in the study of light contributed to the selection of a bath as a test program. The prototype for the thesis was chosen to be a thermal bath at Tattapani located in the northern part of India. The design incorporated the culture through the influence of vastuconsiderations in the initial site layout. The process was reverse engineeredsuch that the light quality in a space was designed prior to the orientation ofthe space. Hence, the design, the site and the program influenced one another through the multiple iterations in the design evolution process.

  • The healthcare design studio involved the study of historical material, current research and trends in healthcare design and several sitevisits of hospitals as part of the analysis for the design. The projectwas evovled from the design of a patient room to the design of awaiting room, a typical floor plan culminating in the entire facility. The main premise of this design was flexibility of the spaces, both individual (patient) and public (waiting area). Daylighting, circulationdesign and security concerns were also considered in the design solution.

Building in MotionRenovation of Regional Transportation Center Syracuse , NYin collaboration with D.Cabellaro

A proposal for the new speed rail projected to take over the existing Syracuse RTC aimed to connect the discontinuous nature of the existing transportation center. The premise of the design was to embrace the programmatic elementsby the circulation, both vehicular and pedestrian. The formal elements of shifting planes were used to facilitate the levitation towards the magnetic attraction of speed rail.

  • reGeneration cycleProposal for Reimagining the Waterfront CompetitionManhattan , NY

Research of the given project site revealed the concentration of threesections of the society along the major public transporation lines servingthe East River Waterfront : Senior citizens, youth below eighteen years of ageand single parents. The design was an integration of crossing over thepedestrian unfriendly Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive as well giving therespective section of the project square footage proportional to the population density it would cater.

  • Mentor Interchange Bridging the gap over the I-81Syracuse, NY

A proposal for a mentor interchange center derived from the location of thesite on the median of the university dorms and the elementary school facilitieswhen the question for the possibility of the interaction between the two groupsarose. The concept of the project revolves around university studentsmentoring school children since the former are the future of the latter. Beinga junction of three junction points which all lie on three different grades,a meeting grade was introduced inspired by the concept of the roundaboutinterchange borrowed from transportation architecture.

  • melting the Chr(ICE)lerfacade creation for the Chrysler building by using software manipulationsin collaboration with J.Obregon for Digital Palette: Summer 2013

A project involving a series of controlled manipulations of a design idea to create a unique, layered intervening facade for an existing building. The project idea intended to incorporatethe memorable arch design at the top of the Chrysler tower as well as into this interveningfacade. The water-carrying hollow frames of the new facade are, thus, an inverted, distortedprojection of the abstracted elevation of the Chrysler building. This interactive facade, withits dramatic flowing water, thus comes alive and seems to be melting down into the city itself, losing its stature among the city's skyline in an apocalyptic climax.

    PROCESS

nclothchrysler building line drawing curves projected on to surface

    modified surface

The Chrysler building has been a symbolic element of the Manhattan skyline similar to how the surrounding water elements have been a significant marker of the island itself. The project idea began with the in-tention of incorporating the memorable arch design at the top of the Chrysler tower as well as the aspect of the water el-ement into this intervening facade.

The frames of the new facade is, thus, an inverted, distorted projection of the ab-stracted elevation of the Chrysler build-ing. The material of the proposed skin deals with the water element and hence is designed to look like frozen icicles which are melting off the corners of this project-ed facade. Hence, the facade comes alive and seems to be melting down into the city itself, losing its stature among the city's skyline in an apocalyptic climax.

  • fluidFire WallAnimated wall project for Media Iin collaboration with V.Gueglio

A design proposal for creating an animated space which changed its illuminationcharacteristics because of moving organic elements which acted as a filter of the light source behind it. It let light through the gaps between these elements. As the elements were moveable, the illumination of the room became a function of the perforations in the wall which were time dependant.
