R/C Schedule 2016 Mar 12 Fri-Sat RCX Expo Mar 19 Sat Swap Meet, Cactus Park, History of the Red Benches More than a year ago, there was a safety concern regarding engine run-up in the pits. In response to that concern, the red benches were erected to provide a location safely away from the pit area for engine starting and run-up, keeping the propeller well away from pit traffic. Subsequently there was much discussion at club meetings and a proposal to change the club rules regarding the red benches. In the end, the club agreed that there need be no such rule. The tables are in place to provide a safe location for tuning engine, but starting engines in the pits is still allowed. While we encourage the use of the tables, it is understandable that some folks have difficulty moving their gear back and forth, particularly during the hot summer months. Engine break-in (long-duration running) "should" be performed well away from the pit. Examples would be areas such as the south parking lot, behind the shed or at the picnic bench. "Should" means encouraged, but not a rule. Finally, if you have an issue with someone's activity at the field, please demonstrate courtesy during the discussions. Above all, when quoting the rules, be sure you know what they say, word for word, without interpretation. This is fun hobby - have FUN. Leave the attitudes at the gate. Keith

Other raffle prizes included (but not limited to) several UMX micro bind-and-fly airplanes, eFlite Power-32 brushless motor, on-board mini camera, drones, a Tx case, LiPo batteries, several ARF/RTF’s including a Concendo Glider, Carbon-Z Cub and a P-51. The top prizes included a Spectrum DX6 (Michelle Miller), Spectrum DX6i (Ryan Crutchfield) and the grand prize was an Evolution 10cc gas engine (Jeff Coskey). Many modelers brought their favorites to compete in the floor show, with the winners being Best Scale – Gary Rold’s Boeing F4B3, Best Sport – Ken Lawrence’s Clean Sweep 36, and Best ARF – Bruce Allen’s Tiger Moth. Congratulations to all! Fire-Fighting Training Ron Keith and Brian Kidwell provided an excellent real-scenario training session at the field on January 16th. Ron covered fire-fighting actions and safety precautions that should be taken for potential fires in the shed or in parked cars, and gave a quick demonstration on burying a burning LiPo battery. Ron and Brian also teamed up to run several members through the fire-fighting training tool which very realistically responded if the agent wasn’t properly swept across the base of the fire. Nicely done, Ron! Pass our thanks along to Brian next time you see him. Our Events Calendar for 2016 is in place and published on the web site and summarized herein. Many “TBD” events are placeholders, and in some cases we’ll be looking for event coordinators to step up. See you at the field! Keith

Fire Fighting Training Ron Keith, our Safety Officer and a Fireman arranged to provide training to handle fires at Cactus Park on Saturday, Jan 16, 2016. Rule #1 : if there’s a fire, CALL 911 Rule #2 : Maybe fight the fire with an extin-guisher if the fire is small, after making sure Rule #1 is completed. A fire in the storage box—with smoke coming out but the door is shut—Do Not Open the Door. Instead, discharge a Carbon Dioxide extinguisher into the box through the vent fac-ing the pits, near the box door. Let the Fire-men handle opening the door. Using an extinguisher on any out side fire—sweep the extinguisher nozzle aimed at the base of the flames starting from about 10 feet away. Sweep the stream back and forth and move closer if necessary. LIPO batteries will burn regardless of extin-guisher and can produce toxic smoke. Use sand or dirt to cover the burning battery.
