The Residual Radioactive (RESRAD) model and computer code was developed as a multifunctional tool to assist in developing cleanup criteria and assessing the dose or risk associated with residual radioactive material. RESRAD has been used widely by DOE and its contractors for deriving limits for radionuclides in soil. RESRAD has also been used by the EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, and the NRC. Debris collectors are often used to protect HEPA filters in vacuums from debris or fluid. T Plant was interested in protecting a HEPA filtered vacuum from paint chips. In the below example you can see how paint chips would enter the drum, fall to the bottom and remain in the drum while air continued to flow into the vacuum. T Plant decided to make a collector drum based on a design they saw in the Center. 3. ALARA Center Activities and Information

1. The Residual Radioactive (RESRAD) model and computer code was developed as a

multifunctional tool to assist in developing cleanup criteria and assessing the dose or risk

associated with residual radioactive material. RESRAD has been used widely by DOE and

its contractors for deriving limits for radionuclides in soil. RESRAD has also been used by

the EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, and the NRC. If you would like to learn more about

RESRAD visit www.evs.anl.gov/resrad.

2 A T Plant radiological engineer and operations representative stopped by the ALARA Center

to view different examples of debris collector drums. Debris collectors are often used to

protect HEPA filters in vacuums from debris or fluid. T Plant was interested in protecting a

HEPA filtered vacuum from paint chips. In the below example you can see how paint chips

would enter the drum, fall to the bottom and remain in the drum while air continued to flow

into the vacuum. T Plant decided to make a collector drum based on a design they saw in the

radiation protection and measurement industry. They specialize in portable alpha-in-air

instrumentation and software applications, algorithm development and practical software

user-interface design. For more information about what Bladewerx can do for your facility

5. The ALARA Center conducted a product demonstration of the Q-Gard Quantumwear

protective suit on April 27. Samples of the suit are still available in the ALARA Center for

you to test at your project. As you may recall, Q-Gard Quantumwear is a disposable suit

used in radiological contamination areas and as a measure to prevent heat stress. For more

information about Quest visit http://www.questsafety.com/. For more information about the

Q-Gard Quantumwear suit, and to view a demonstration video, visit

D&D Hotline Activities and Information

1. The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has a site which lists nuclear

plants that are undergoing, or have completed, D&D. The site lists plants by name or

location. It’s a great place to start looking for information that directly relates to D&D at

your facility. You can visit the site at http://www.nrc.gov/info-

finder/decommissioning/index.html.

2. Meccanica Breganzese is a leader in production and sale of jaw-action bucket crushers

(photo below). Bucket crushers can be used in demolition or field remediation to reduce void

space in waste packaging. Reducing void space allows more material to be packaged and

helps keep the waste package stable during shipment. For more information about

Meccanica Breganzese bucket crushers visit http://www.mbcrusher.com/prodotti_usa.php .

3. Tadano America specializes in rough-terrain cranes that have many features which make

them extremely capable off road. Several DOE facilities are located in remote areas where

there are rough roads or no roads at all. Getting equipment to the work site can be a

challenging task itself. For more information about Tadano rough-terrain cranes visit

http://www.tadanoamerica.com/public/cat2.aspx.
