17.0 Handwriting

I’m Alex and I’m going to help you with handwriting.

You’re going to start joining letters using the exits and entries learned already.

You’ll be writing words like:

ca¡p pla¡y sl¡i¡p

Try to use the new joins whenever you write.

21.0 Revising drop-on joins

Practise joining letters with exits to letters without entries, or shoulder letters. You join these letters with a drop-on join.

Remember to continue the exit up to the shoulder, then lift your pencil and write the shoulder letter, dropping it onto the exit.

Circle the drop-on joins in the word below.

2 Write the word using a different colouring pencil each time you lift your pencil.

Remember to lift your pencil after the exit and begin the shoulder letter in the correct place.

21.1 Letters that don’t join

There are some letters that don’t join to the following letter because they finish in a clockwise direction and have no exits. Let’s look at those letters now.

1 Trace over the letters that don’t join to any following letters.

2 Trace over and then write these letters that don’t join to any letters that follow them.

You’re going to learn about letters that finish at or near the top of the letter.

Letters that finish at the top are called top-finishing letters.

Circle the top-finishing letters in green.

Did you circle , , and ? These are the only letters that finish on or near the top of the letter.

Practise writing the top-finishing letters on the lines below.

You join top-finishing letters to a letter that begins nearby with a horizontal join.

Trace over and then write these letter pairs.

When you do a horizontal join between these letters, there’s a little dip in the join.

21.7 New writing lines

Look closely at the new Year writing lines. How are they different from Year lines?

Year Year

Did you notice that the lines are closer together? You’ll be using these special lines for the rest of your work in Year .

Write your name in the Year lines.

You’ve been busy learning about horizontal joins. These joins are used when a letter starts on or near the same line as the last letter finished. Let’s practise some horizontal joins on the new Year lines.

Trace over the grey lines and then practise these horizontal joins.

21.8 To join or not to join

Joins using the letter can be a bit tricky! You need to choose whether to join or to lift your pencil.

Trace over each word.

Circle the words you found easier to write.

Sometimes it’s easy to join , but sometimes it’s better to lift your pencil.

22.0 Revising horizontal joins and letters that don’t join

Let’s start by practising the horizontal joins you have learned so far.

When you join top-finishing letters to pointed entry or rounded entry letters, the horizontal join has a little dip in it.Remember, you can lift your pencil after the letter r or if there are lots of joins in the word you’re writing.

1 Trace over these words.

22.1 Practising letters

You’re going to learn how to join top-finishers to shoulder letters using a horizontal join.

Top-finishing letters finish at the top of the letter. Shoulder letters start in an anticlockwise direction and don’t have an entry.

1 Trace over the top-finishing letters.

2 Trace over the shoulder letters.

3 Trace over and then write these top-finishing letters and shoulder letters.

4 Write a top-finishing letter followed by a shoulder letter. Have a go at joining the letters with a horizontal join. Try a few times.

After you’ve done the horizontal join, you’ll need to retrace over the top of the shoulder letter to join them. Don’t lift your pencil when you’re joining the letters.
