Well, we can’t really believe

it but this is now our third edition of Handprints Magazine. From a seed of an idea just under 3 years ago we are proud to bring you what we think is the best edition yet.

This edition is jam packed full of information with lots of features. If you are a new (or an old) mum we have some great fi tness advice from a personal trainer which should motivate you to get out in the summer sunshine – if we get any. We’ve also got some ideas to keep the kids busy this summer with some fab outdoor toys from Gifted Originals.

We have also taken a look at fl exible working for parents and we have been truly inspired by all the hard working and successful Mums out there who are able to fi t their jobs around their families. As we write this we know that many of you are feeling the pinch and some of you are having to cope with the stress of redundancy so if you are looking for a part time job or a change in career we have found some

Bouncing back into shapeThe summer sun makes it easier and cheaper to lose weight and get fit...

It’s amazing how capable your body is at stretching to make room for your growing baby, but most mums find that their bodies aren’t so good at springing back. Right now you’ll find stick insect yummy mummy’s all over glossy spreads, tie that in with the current economic climate and you’ve got gloom staring you in the face!

Not so fast, there’s a ray of hope in the form of sunshine that is. Warmer, brighter days just made it that much easier and cheaper to bounce back into shape.

Follow these easy steps to a new fitter, firmer and fabulous you. All you need is 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times per week aiming for 5-6 times per week. Very inexpensive options are: running; cycling; skating and power walking. Incorporate your buggy, add hand/ankle weights or just carry your baby in sling, use inclines and you’ve increased the intensity helping you to burn even more fat. The idea is to get yourself to the point where you aren’t able to hold a conversation very easily.

Resistance training boosts your metabolism which then helps you to burn more fat. Mums here’s a great chance to exercise with your baby. You would naturally rock your baby to sleep or lift your baby up and down to be rewarded with giggles, increase your repetitions and you’re onto a winner. There are lots of classes dotted around Bristol where you can exercise with your baby, allowing you to maximise your results.

Remember exercise should be fun it’s a lifestyle, so chose activities that you enjoy. Working as part of a group or team will significantly increase motivation and help you achieve results that much sooner. I would highly recommend working with a specialist personal trainer for fresh and fun ideas.

We have been on a fitness campaign – ok, you would never know it from looking at us but honestly we have! One of our trainers – the incredibly fit Leeanna from FitMamas has given us some great advice about getting back in to shape.

Lucy’s Boot Camp Diary When I saw a notice on netmums to exercise for free with Leeanna, I thought – that’s for me! Then I read it was “Boot Camp” which really scared me. Then I found out that Boot Camp is just group personal training so I thought why not Go For It and signed up to a free trial for one month.

Week 1 Getting up at 6 am on a cold frosty March morning is not my idea of fun but I need to get fit so I am gonna give it a go. When I arrive in a muddy rugby pitch I really wonder what I have let myself in for. Fortunately the other new recruits seem to think the same. First session is ok, we do 30 mins of interval training which is a shock to my system.

Week 2Its not getting any warmer yet but I am getting used to the early mornings, Leeanna is very good at motivating us. I can’t believe that I am getting personal training twice a week for free!

Week 3 I really start to see a difference now as I have much more energy on the days I do boot camp and although I haven’t changed my eating habits I have lost 5lb!! I must be doing something right.

Week 4The clocks go forward and I just can’t get up at 6am on the first Monday! Then we have to take a break for Easter holidays and my mind and body go into slob mode.

Week 5 Starting back after a 2 week break is really hard. Leeanna doesn’t let up and still pushes us and if I was on my own I would never keep it up.

Boot Camp has definitely improved my fitness and I really enjoy my 30 minutes of me time every Monday and Friday morning – even if it is at 6.30am! I am a dedicated ”bootie” now and would recommend it to any busy mum if you don’t mind early mornings.

Before September Parents may be invited to an evening at the school, at which they will be given information about the school, meet the teachers, uniform, and classroom

Some schools have a buddy system where the current year 5 children write to the new children starting and then help them through their first year at school. Children may have a chance of a visit or even attend a lunch time session.

Getting ready You can help your child be independent by making sure they can dress themselves, changing their clothes from one set to another for P.E. and button or zip up their coat. Can they tie their shoe laces? If not try to get them shoes with Velcro fastenings, it makes the teachers life a lot easier.

Can your child take him or herself to the toilet without assistance and wash and dry hands afterwards, as well as pull the flush?

Have a Picnic If your child is going to stay for packed lunches, can they manage to open everything they have in their lunch box? You could se the Summer holidays and warmer days to go on “picnics” which is a great way to help them deal with this. Can they manage a yogurt? Put a plastic spoon in that does not matter if it gets lost. Can they drink from a bottle of water i.e. take the lid off and drink or flip the spout out to drink? Can they drink through a straw if they are going to have milk.

Lunch Box rules Check the school regulations to see what items are allowed in Lunch Boxes. Some school do not permit peanuts due to allergies in children.

Getting organised Can your child keep things together in a small place such as a drawer? Encourage them to put things in a folder or envelope carefully, there will be lots of letters to come home in book bags, this will help teachers and staff. Can they use a pair of scissors?

The name gameMost important is to label everything and make sure that your child can find their own name from several similar names.

And finally… Children should look forward to going to school and most of all School should be fun. Good luck in September!

yesterday we were changing their nappies and proudly pushing them around in their prams. September may seem a long way off but we know it will here sooner than we think, so we

Take your imagination on a Great Green Adventure in half term!

Time 4 Mums is a new young parents group set up for young mums and pregnant young people 20 and under.

South Gloucestershire Youth Service and Surestart have joined forces to give young parents an opportunity to develop their self esteem, confi dence and meet other people.

The programme will cover different topics including parenting styles, play and development, healthy living, independent living and other issues that affect young people, as well as pampering, art and craft work, nail art, music, spray tattoos, fi lms, trips out, cooking and eating!

There are 10 places per group with a crèche for the children and babies provided through Children’s Playlink We understand that leaving their child may be a big step for some mums and so will take this into consideration.

Hop Skip & Jump is a charity set up in 2003 to provide a special place for children with life threatening illnesses

or any special need and their families.The charity has its own play and support centre,

located in Kingswood, Bristol, which is visited by both families and other charities from Bristol , Bath & North East Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and further afi eld throughout the South West. The centre provides support for families that have children with special needs, both physically and mentally, many of which come from geographical areas known for fi nancial deprivation.

Hop Skip & Jump aims to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities by building their

confi dence, social skills and self esteem through freedom of adventure, open spaces, fun and laughter. The types of life limiting and life threatening disabilities experienced by the children visiting the centre are wide ranging from autism and deafness to aspergers and cancer.

The centre is based within a giant log cabin and facilities include a huge internal play area, an art and craft room, a soft play area, a reading room as well as a complimentary therapy clinic and specially designed sensory rooms. In addition to this there is also a 2 acre external play area.

Regular treatments are offered in the therapy rooms including aromatherapy, reiki and Indian head massage. The centre also provides a hairdressing service as well a personal counselling service for families and siblings, which is offered in partnership with fully qualifi ed and experienced counsellors.

In recent years the charity’s profi le has grown considerably. In 2008 local BBC TV presenter, Ali Vowles, became President of Hop Skip & Jump and in the last year alone the centre has seen the number of visits jump from 9,000 to 12,000!

Hop Skip & Jump is a self supporting charity and relies on donations to raise the £200,000 needed each year to ensure that the centre can continue its vital work.

Play is one of the crucial elements of a good childhood and experts say that play – especially when it takes place outdoors - is crucial to a child’s health. Now that spring has defi nitely sprung and we’re hopefully in line for a glorious summer(!), encourage your child to switch off the television, ditch the computer game and get outdoors. Turn your garden into an adventure playground. Throw a rope ladder or a button swing over a tree branch, have your own sports day with a sack race or egg and spoon race. The park is brilliant, a great day out for all the family. We took Charlotte (2) and Thomas (1) and enjoyed pretty

much all of the attractions. When you arrive there is an indoor visitor centre including “Toad Hall” where children can explore ratty’s home and meet toads face to face in the interactive demonstrations.

Once you get out into the grounds you are greeted by friendly ducks, geese swans and cranes. We bought some seeds so we could feed them which Charlotte thought was brilliant. The whole park is full

of different birds and animals and is great fun. We even got to meet a family of ducklings close up.

Unfortunately the weather was a bit cold and damp but this did not stop Charlotte and Tom from enjoying their favourite part of the day “WellyBoot Land”. I had visions of a muddy area with water everywhere and my kids being knee high in mud but its nothing like that – it’s a purpose built water play park where I could happily let Thomas scoot around on his bottom – he is a bum shuffler – and Charlotte could explore the stream, sand, slides and climbing frames, she especially liked the giant eggs.

All in all a fantastic day out for all the family so we will be buying an annual family membership on our next visit.

A day out with the ducks

During the Easter holidays I was lucky enough to be able to take some time out to visit WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre with my family. We weren’t sure what to expect, but I can honestly say that the day out exceeded our expectations.

Good communication is about so much more than talking – a child can be a chatterbox and still have poor communication skills. Good communication means being able to express yourself clearly, but also being able to listen to other people, to follow instructions, to take turns in a group, and being able to describe situations. At Talking Tots we use carefully-designed games to teach children about narrative skills (telling stories), as well as providing phonological (sound) and semantic (word) awareness – skills that will make it easier for your child to learn to read and write later on.
