PREFACEThis book is a compilation of all important aspects of the syllabus

of the esteemed University of Mumbai for First Year Engineering (F.E.),Revised Course (2012-2013), Semester 1, Subject: EnvironmentalStudies. Efforts are made here to collect and arrange important points ofall the topics stated in each Module therein the subject as well as theirsub-topics to satisfy and justify aim of the subject: EnvironmentalStudies. The care has been taken by giving emphasis on scientificallybased knowledge, information and tried to the level best to present it ina much simplified manner; so that students can use this handbook astheir quick-memorizer and ready reckoner.

The Case Studies as stated in the curriculum are also discussed inthis text book with all important aspects of the same, so that the studentscan get most reliable data of the case studies.

DefinitionEnvironmental Study: It is multidisciplinary which

includes and/ or integration of Biology, Geology, Chemistry,Physics, Engineering, Sociology, Health, Anthropology,Economics, Statistics, Computers and Philosophy, as it dealswith every issue that affects living organisms.

Broadly, the term Environment is classified into two types:

(a) Natural: It is without the interference of human beings. Itis self-regulated mechanism referred as ‘Homeostasis’means any change in natural ecosystem is brought bynatural processes and it is counterbalanced by naturalchanges in other components of environment.

(b) Man-made/Anthropogenic: The changes in environmentare due to interference of human activities – particularly –wide use enhanced technologies, increased population, etc.

Scope and Importance (Range of Subject and its Significance)It covers study and understanding of various components

of Surroundings. Natural Landscape is the combination offorest, river, sea, mountain and desert. Natural Landscape hasbeen modified by human beings into villages, towns and citieswhich are interdependent and are depend on:Air, Food and Water(Agriculture, Forest,Grassland, Sea, River),Fuel (Forest, Grassland,Sea),Shelter (Forest, Mountains,River, Creeks)

Increase in population leads to increase in the needs thatare increase in demand of essential commodities. Thus, it leadsto requirement of agricultural, industrial and infrastructuregrowth.

Hence, increase in population leads to high increase inneeds as well as high demands and to cater high needs and highdemands. We have to produce more resources. To increase theproduction, certainly we require going for technologicalinnovations and their indiscriminate applications. This leads torapid economical growth. But it resulted into EnvironmentalDegradation that is Environmental Pollution because ofincreased industrial development.

To overcome Environmental Degradation, it is necessaryto invent new technologies which would give high yield withless or minimum contamination of air and water. In addition tothis, we have to conserve resources and prevent sustainable use.

Thus, the scope of environmental study is to reverse thecurrent trend of environmental degradation. It can only beachieved by organizing and empowering the people fromeducated communities as well as involving experts in thesustainable development.

The environmental studies help us to know the importanceof protection of earth from indiscriminate release of pollutantsand to do conservation of healthy environment of our earth.

Thus, the environmental studies become important orsignificant due to the following reasons:

1. International environmental issues like global warming, ozonedepletion, acid rain, marine pollution, biodiversity, etc.

2. Rapid development such as urbanization, industrial growth,mode of transportation, uninhabited agriculture and housingdevelopment by ignoring green building concept.

3. High rate of increase in population.

4. Need for alternative solutions to achieve sound and sustainabledevelopment.

5. Need to protect and save humanity from extinction.

6. Need to have appropriate planning for development whichshould not have adverse effect on environment.

Appropriate Planning of Study:Take any Article. List its main components. Trace itsorigin (natural resources) that is renewable or non-renewable. Then find out whether it isoverused/misused/improperly used.

Need for Public AwarenessMany people are not aware of air pollution, water

pollution, noise pollution and their adverse effect or impact onhealth. Even some of the people are aware about it but are leastbothered. Hence, it is necessary to make people aware of it andeducate them so that their each and every act would be eco-friendly.

Following factors become more helpful to have publicawareness:

Some of these challenges are as under:(a) Control of growth rate of population: A population of

over thousands of millions is growing approximately atthe rate of 2.11% every year. Hence, the greatestchallenge before us is to control the population growthrate. Although population control does automatically leadto development, yet the development leads to a decreasein population growth rates.

(b) Reduce or minimize poverty: The poverty andenvironmental degradation have a nexus between them.The vast majority of our people are directly dependent onthe natural resources of the country for their basic needsof food, fuel shelter and fodder. About 40% of our peopleare still below the poverty line. Environment degradationhas adversely affected the poor who depend upon theresources of their immediate surroundings.

(c) Farming, cultivation or agricultural growth: Thepeople must be acquainted with the methods to sustainand increase agricultural growth without damaging theenvironment. Use of chemical fertilizers, high yieldingvarieties, pesticides, etc. have caused soil salinity anddamage fertility of soil as well increases toxicity.

(d) Need of proper utilization and maintenance of safequality of surface soft water and groundwater: It isnecessary of rationalizing the use of surface soft drinkingwater as well groundwater. Factors like communitywastes, industrial effluents, chemical fertilizers andpesticides have polluted our surface water and affectedquality of the groundwater. It is essential to restore thewater quality of our rivers and other water bodies.

(e) Conservation and development and forests: Forestsserve catchments for the rivers. The tribal communitiesinhabit forests and respects the trees, birds and animalsthat gives them sustenance. It is necessary to recognizethe role of these people in restoring and conservingforests. The modern knowledge of technology and skillsof the forest department should be integrated with thetraditional skills and experience of the local communities.

(f) Deterioration of land: At present, out of the total 329mha (million hectares) of land, only 266 mha possess anypotential for production. Out of 226 mha, about 175 mhaor 66 % is degraded to varying degrees. Water and winderosion causes further degradation of almost 150 mha.This degradation is to be avoided.

(g) Acquaintance of institutions: The people should beroused to become conversant with institutions, attitudesand infrastructures, to suit conditions and needs today.Change should be brought in education, in attitudes, inadministrative procedures and in institutions.

(h) Decrease in genetic diversity: Appropriate measures toconserve genetic diversity are necessary to be taken. At

present, most wild genetic stocks have been disappearingfrom nature. Remedial steps are to be taken to checkdecreasing genetic diversity.

(i) Urbanization: Urbanization and industrialization hasgiven birth to a great number of environmental problemsthat need urgent attention; hence, coping with rapidurbanization is a major challenge.

(j) Air and water pollution: Majority of our industrial plantsare using outdated and population or inhabitanttechnologies and make shift facilities devoid of anyprovision of treating their wastes. A great number ofcities and industrial areas that have been identified as theworst polluted in terms of air and water pollution. Actsare enforced in the country, but their implement is not soeasy.

So, prevention of Environmental Degradation must be apart of our lives and following agencies and factorsbecome more helpful to have public awareness: Mass Media (Radio, TV, Newspaper, other modes of

advertisement), Government Institutions and NGO (Non-governmental organizations) influence the politicians,

Strong Public Supported Movements (Street Plays, March,Events),

Personal Awareness, Watchdogs (We have to become watchdog for ourselves).

Appropriate TechnologyFor this, the following points are of most concerned:1. Technology should be most advanced and eco-friendly,

2. Able to give high yield,

3. Economically most feasible,

4. Easy, simplified in operation and fully auto-operation at theplace/part where risk of life may be caused to human operatorsand/or controllers,

5. The most important point is, the technology adopted must beassociated with the process/technique of successful disposal of

the waste and/or effluent in the form of solid, liquid or gasgiven out during the process.

6. Technology so accepted must be well synchronized with as wellas have well consideration of local people, their habitats,surrounding climates, living conditions, etc. of the site wherethe plant and/or unit is to be established.

Environmental Education

1. Environment awareness is to be cultivated from the very initialstage of education, i.e., from KG and Nursery.

2. Environmental Study should be introduced as one of thecompulsory subjects at each step of education.

3. Visits to be arranged for students to various industries, sewagetreatment plants and solid waste disposal places.

4. Public Seminars to be arranged on environmental awarenessand its protection.

5. Mass Media should play an important role to educate peopleregarding their role in protection of environment.

6. Even the advertisements must be so intellectual and effective tohave an impact on the minds of public with respect toenvironmental awareness and its protection.

7. Mass Media (Radio, TV, Newspaper), Government Institutions,and NGO (Non-government Organization) influence thepoliticians.

8. Strong Public Supported Movements (Street Plays, March,Events).

Hydrosphere

1. Atmosphere: The atmosphere implies the protectiveblanket of gases, surrounding the earth which sustains lifeon the earth. It saves the earth from the hostile environmentof outer space by absorbing most of the cosmic rays fromouter space and a major portion of the electromagneticradiation from the sun. It transmits only ultraviolet, visible,near infrared radiation (300 to 2500 nm) and radiowaves(0.14 to 40 m) while filtering out tissue-damagingultraviolet waves below about 300 nm. The atmosphere iscomposed of nitrogen oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide andtrace gases.

2. Hydrosphere: The hydrosphere comprises all types ofwater resources oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, streams,reservoirs, polar icecaps, glaciers and groundwater.

3. Lithosphere: Lithosphere is the outer mantle of the solidearth. It consists of minerals occurring in the earth’s crustsand the soil, e.g., minerals, organic matter, air and water.

Depleting Nature of Environmental Resources

1. Soil

“A nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.” – FranklinD. Roosevelt.

Healthy soil is essential for the production of crops usedto feed humans and livestock. In addition to providing a stablebase to support plant roots, soil stores water and nutrientsrequired for plant growth.

Unfortunately, industrial agricultural practices continue todamage and deplete this valuable natural resource.

While intensive ploughing and mono-crop agriculturesystems have caused nutrient depletion and wide-scale soil

erosion, over-application of fertilizers and pesticides hascontaminated our soils and polluted our waterways.

Fortunately, many farmers are choosing to use sustainableagricultural techniques such as conservation tillage, croprotation and organic fertilization in order to protect ourvaluable soil resources.

Soil Erosion: Erosion is the movement of soil by water,wind or gravity. Although this process occurs naturally,industrial farming practices have dramatically increased thespeed at which agricultural soils are eroded.

Currently, the average rate of soil erosion is approx. 7 tonsper acre per year. The rate of erosion is highest when soil is notcovered by a protective layer of plants or decaying organicmatter. Industrial farmland is particularly susceptible to erosiondue to intensive tillage (ploughing), which eliminatesprotective ground cover from the soil surface and destroys rootsystems that help hold soil together.

Since soil formation is an extraordinarily slow process,erosion poses a serious problem; soil erosion can quickly causefertile farmland to become unsuitable for agriculture. Inextreme cases, erosion can lead to desertification, a processwhich causes arid soil to become barren and incapable ofsustaining plant growth for many years. In fact, over the past40 years, 30% of the world’s arable land has becomeunproductive as a result of erosion.

However, even low rates of soil erosion can severelydamage agricultural land; not only does erosion reduce thewater-holding capacity of a given soil, it also strips awaynutrients and organic matter. In fact, soil removed by erosioncontains about 3 times more nutrients and 1.5 to 5 times moreorganic matter than the soil that remains behind.

Pollution and Damage Caused by Erosion: In additionto removing valuable soil from farmland, erosion polluteswaterways with sediment. Runoff containing sedimentdegrades aquatic ecosystems by reducing stream depth and

increasing turbidity, making water cloudier and causing thepopulation of fish and other aquatic organisms to decline.

Soil Nutrients, Fertilizers and Pesticides: Plants need,in order to grow, a variety of different nutrients. In naturalenvironments such as prairies and forests, plants obtain mostnecessary nutrients from minerals found within the soil. Whenthese plants die, they fall to the ground, decompose, andrelease nutrients back into the soil, making them available fornew plants. In this way, nutrients are “recycled” with eachgeneration.

On farms, the nutrient cycle is somewhat different. Sincecrops are continually harvested or eaten by grazing livestock,there is no steady supply of decaying plant material toreplenish nutrient levels within the soil. Instead, nutrients mustbe restored by adding fertilizers to the soil.

Traditionally, agricultural soils were fertilized usinglivestock manure, which is rich in nutrients and organic matter.Farmers also practiced crop rotation, regularly alternating thetypes of crop grown in various fields and periodically allowingfields to remain unplanted. This process enables organic matterto accumulate and decompose, thus restoring nutrients to thesoil.

Industrial agriculture has dramatically altered the nutrientmanagement practices used on farms. Today’s large-scaleindustrial farms depend on synthetic, man-made chemicalfertilizers to support high-intensity mono-crop systems. Theover-application of synthetic fertilizers and manure bothcontribute to the growing problem of nutrient pollution. Due toregular application of chemical fertilizer as well as their highdoses, the fertility of the soil gets deteriorated as it becomestoxic.

Even, the applications of chemical pesticides also makenot only the agricultural product toxic but also affect the soilwhich become toxic and it results into non-fertility of soil aswell as the toxicity of such agricultural product has adverse ill-effects on health.

2. Water

Water is the most essential commodity of life, but nevergiven much thought for its conservation. Depletion of waterresources tends to happen on a local level, but it happens sooften and in so many different areas that it becomes a globalproblem. All continents are affected by water shortages orsupply problems of some sort. The result is needy populationsand countries are willing to go to war just to access water.

Though depletion of water resources is not a problem foreveryone, the United Nations Food and AgricultureOrganization (FAO) notes that 1.2 billion people, almost 20%of the Earth’s population, are experiencing water scarcity.Another 500 million come perilously close to that threshold.

Causes: While the average person needs approximately ahalf gallon of water each day in order to meet physicalrequirements, it takes much more than that to produce thatperson’s food. As many as 1,320 gallons of water are requiredto produce one person’s food for one day. Much of that wateris consumed for agricultural irrigation, which is needed inmany parts of the world.

Drought and changes in routine weather patterns areresponsible for water depletion in some areas.

Effects: As water resources are depleted, the issuebecomes more intensely political. For example, more than twostates draw water from one river and have agreements in placeabout how that river water will be distributed and used, bothduring times of surplus and in droughts.

In cases where water resources extend beyond theboundaries of one nation, the negotiations can be tense.

Solution: As with the depletion of natural resources,water issues may be resolved or controlled by conservation,replenishment and the location of new sources.

Replenishment is difficult because water supplies dependon natural cycles. Significant conservation of water can be

achieved through use of more effective irrigation strategiessuch as drip techniques.

The best solution on this water scarcity is the conservationof water. Public awareness about it is most important andpeople are to be educated for the same as we are aware that wecan save water in our regular daily practices; e.g., we shouldnot keep water tap open continuously while mouth or handwash. Even the utensils are not to be washed under runningwater, but are to be rinsed in water taken in bucket. We have toavoid the wash under shower where large quantity of water getwasted.

Rain water harvesting is to be done in all residentialcolonies. Even in villages during the shortfall of rainfall duringmonsoon, the villagers should store water in the artificial lakeswhich are designed to minimize the loss of water on storage.

It is recommended that new sources may includedesalination of plants, though that option remains veryexpensive and impractical for many locations.3. Minerals

Mining and recovery of mineral resources has beencarried out since a long time. Early Paleolithic man found flintfor arrowheads and clay for pottery before developing codesfor warfare. And this was done without geologists forexploration, mining engineers for recovery or chemists forextraction techniques. Tin and copper mines were necessary fora Bronze Age; gold, silver, and gemstones adorned the wealthof early civilizations; and iron mining introduced the new ageof man.

Human wealth basically comes from agriculture,manufacturing, and mineral resources. Our complex modernsociety is built around the exploitation and use of mineralresources. Since the future of humanity depends on mineralresources, we must understand that these resources have limits;our known supply of minerals will be used up early in the thirdmillennium of our calendar. Furthermore, modern agricultureand the ability to feed an overpopulated world is dependent on

mineral resources to construct the machines that till the soil,enrich it with mineral fertilizers, and to transport the products.

Geologists cannot say that mineral resources are finite.The present available resources which were created by earthprocesses and after these resources get exhaust then it will takemore than few tens of millions of years to develop because theprocess of earth to form minerals is absolutely slow and it isnot in human life-spans. Now, the limits of reserves for manyminerals has been reached to the minimum level. Humanpopulation growth and increased modern industry are depletingour available resources at increasing rates.

Although objections have been made to the Rome Reportof 1972, the press of human growth upon the planet’s resourcesis a very real problem. The consumption of natural resourcesproceeded at a phenomenal rate during the past hundred yearsand population and production increases cannot continuewithout increasing pollution and depletion of mineral resources.The geometric rise of population has been joined by a period ofrapid industrialization, which has placed incredible pressure onthe natural resources.

Limits of growth in the world are imposed not as much bypollution as by the depletion of natural resources. As theindustrialized nations of the world continue the rapid depletionof energy and mineral resources, and resource-rich less-developed nations become increasingly aware of the value oftheir raw materials, resource-driven conflicts will increase. Byabout the middle of the next century, the critical factors cometogether to impose a drastic population reduction bycatastrophe.

Due to the scarcity of some of the minerals, it has beenobserved that anti-social elements have empowered the miningbusiness and thus it has been resulted into cost enhancementwhich grossly affected the economy.4. Forests

Depletion and destruction of forests cause imbalances inthe nature and enhance threatening the survival of the human as

well as various living species. It is very much shocking that inthe past 100 years the world has lost almost half of its forestarea; and as indicated by reports of the FAO (Food andAgriculture Organization), the Earth is losing on net every year11.2 million hectares of virgin forest.

It has been reported by World Wildlife Fund that mainlydue to its use as an energy source about 2000 million peopleworldwide use wood as fuel. In addition to this, agriculturaland livestock expansion and mining and logging companiesactivities which are often beyond control lead to depletion offorests.

This decline of forests, particularly serious in the case oftropical forests not only increases the greenhouse effect byreducing the absorption of carbon dioxide but also aggravatedthe decline of water resources. As the dwindling forest cover,logically increases rainfall runoff, which favors the floods, soilerosion and reduces the amount that seeps into the ground torecharge aquifers.

It is to be noted that live or life in forests between 50%and 90% of all terrestrial species is accompanied by a seriousloss of biodiversity. And there are more problems arising fromthe reduction of forest cover, as they will facilitate access toforest roads to pick up lumber, etc. They become drier andmore susceptible to fires, which further reduces more woodedarea and this, in turn, makes less rainwater to seep into theground.

A report by the Brazilian Government acknowledged in1999 that 80% of the timber from the Amazon without a permitwas obtained. And the tropical forest areas cleared in Africacorrespond to species that take more than two hundred years togrow. One problem has been to add the deforestation that iscausing Cotlan exploitation in Africa with great impact also onbiodiversity.

Sumatra Deforestation has been caused due to the sale ofwood and burning to prepare land for agriculture, coupled withspontaneous fires, came to form a column of smoke that spread

over one million km, which affected 70 million people in citiesfar away. The same has happened repeatedly in the Amazonrainforest. And this is related to the loss of another naturalresource: the arable land, just as we are at the time of risingfood demand which is longest in history. This is anotherexample of linking multiple problems.

On the one hand, we suffer from the impact of urbangrowth and the number of roads at the expense of fertile soils.Thus, since the eighties in China lost more than 400000hectares of agricultural land each year due to boomingconstruction and industrial growth, and the same applies toother Asian countries such as Korea, Indonesia and Japan, inwhich rapid industrialization devours farmland and, therefore,must import more than 70% of cereals consumed.Global Environmental Crisis Related to Population,Water, Sanitation and Land1. Population

Since around year 1350, the human population has beengrowing continuously, although the most significant increasehas been in the last 50 years, mainly due to medicaladvancements and increases in agricultural productivity. Therate of population growth has been declining since the 1980s.The United Nations has expressed concern on continuedexcessive population growth.

Most current estimates for the carrying capacity of theEarth under existing conditions are between 4 billion and 16billion. Depending on which estimate is used, humanoverpopulation may or may not have already occurred.Nevertheless, the rapid recent increase in human population iscausing some concern. The population is expected to reachbetween 8 and 10.5 billion between the year 2040 and 2050.

Human overpopulation occurs if the number of people in agroup exceeds the carrying capacity of a region occupied bythat group. Overpopulation can further be viewed, in a long-term perspective, as an existing one when a population cannotbe maintained without the rapid depletion of non-renewable

resources or without the degradation of the capacity of theenvironment to give support to the population.

High population can result from an increase in births, adecline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or anunsustainable biome and depletion of resources. It is possiblefor very meagerly populated areas to be overpopulated if thearea has a meager or non-existent capability to sustain life suchas a desert and for population decline.

Overpopulation is not just population density or amount ofpeople per landmass. Overpopulation applies much more so tothe number of people in an area exceeding the resources andthe carrying capacity of the environment necessary to sustainhuman activities. So, much focus is placed on the rapidpopulation growth in third world countries. However, when wecompare lifestyles of the rich countries vs. the poor countries,the rich countries are a much greater problem. For example,Americans constitute less than 5% of the world’s totalpopulation, but consume 26% of the world’s energy. Just asmuch as the population size, we need to consider the resourcesconsumed by each person, and the damage done bytechnologies used to supply them.

Overpopulation is when the number of people cannot bepermanently maintained without depleting resources andwithout degrading the environment and the people’s standardof living. Because we are rapidly using up resources around theworld, virtually all nations are overpopulated. This applieseven more so to the rich nations. As we use up the resources,the earth’s carrying capacity continues to decrease.

Education and Planning: One option is to focus oneducation about overpopulation, family planning, and birthcontrol methods, and to make birth control devices likemale/female condoms, pills and intrauterine devices easilyavailable. Worldwide, nearly 40% of pregnancies areunintended (some 80 million unintended pregnancies of eachyear). An estimated 350 million women in the poorestcountries of the world either did not want their last child or donot want another child.

Problems associated with human population growthand over-consumption are:

Inadequate fresh water for drinking as well as sewage treatmentand effluent discharge in some countries.

Depletion of natural resources, especially fossil fuels. Increase in world energy consumption. Increased levels of air pollution, water pollution, soil

contamination and noise pollution. Deforestation and loss of ecosystems that valuably contribute to

the global atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide balance. Changes in the atmospheric composition and consequent global

warming. Loss of arable land and increase in desertification. Mass species extinctions from reduced habitat in tropical forests

due to slash-and-burn techniques that sometimes are practicedby shifting cultivators, especially in countries with rapidlyexpanding rural populations.

High infant and child mortality. High rates of infant mortalityare associated with poverty.

Increased chance of the emergence of new epidemics andpandemics. For many environmental and social reasons,including overcrowded living conditions, malnutrition andinadequate, inaccessible, or non-existent health care.

Unhygienic living conditions for many based upon waterresource depletion, discharge of raw sewage and solid wastedisposal.

Elevated crime rate due to drug cartels and increased theft bypeople stealing resources to survive.

Conflict over scarce resources and crowding, leading toincreased levels of warfare.

Less personal freedom and more restrictive laws. Laws regulateinteractions between humans.

2. WaterWater is very much important to life. No one survive can

without it and it has no substitute. Most critical limiting factorsfor many aspects of life are:

population has No Access to safe drinking water.

Water resources are sources of water that are useful orpotentially useful. Uses of water include agricultural, industrial,household, recreational and environmental activities andvirtually all of these; human uses requires fresh water.

About 97% of the water on the Earth is salt water.However, only 3% is fresh water; slightly over two-thirds ofthis is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. The remainingunfrozen fresh water is found mainly as groundwater, with onlya small fraction present above the ground or in the air.

Fresh water is a renewable resource, yet the world’ssupply of groundwater is steadily decreasing, with depletionoccurring most prominently in Asia and North America,although it is still unclear as to how much natural renewalbalances this usage, and whether ecosystems are actuallythreatened. The framework for allocating water resources towater users (where such a framework exists) is known as waterrights.

Competition for water has widely increased, and it hasbecome more difficult to conciliate the necessities for watersupply for human consumption, food production, ecosystemsand other uses. Water administration is frequently involved incontradictory and complex problems.

Approximately 10% of the worldwide annual runoff isused for human necessities. Several areas of the world areflooded, while others have such low precipitations that humanlife is almost impossible. As the population and thedevelopment increase, raising water demand, the possibility ofproblems inside a certain country or region increases, as ithappens with others outside the region. Over the past manyyears, politicians, academics and journalists have frequently

predicted that disputes over water would be a source of futurewars.3. Sanitation

Improved sanitation is defined by the World HealthOrganization (WHO) as connection to a public sewer,connection to a septic system, a pour-flush latrine, a simple pitlatrine or a ventilated improved pit latrine.

There are at least 2.6 billion people in the world withoutimproved sanitation. Most of these 2.6 billion reside in ruralAsia and Africa.

But technically, even access to “improved” sanitation doesnot solve the problem because conventional pit latrines usuallyfail to sanitize and they contribute to groundwater pollution.Also, septic systems and sewage treatment plants oftendischarge into the environment with little or no sanitization ornutrient removal. So, in actuality, far more than 2.6 billionpeople need to gain access to effective and sustainablesanitation.

Pit latrines of various kinds serve about 2.8 billion peopleand are often health and environmental hazards. Of the 1.1billion people served by sewage systems, many of thosesystems do not have advanced end-of-the-pipe treatment(secondary level or better) (Matsui, 2002). These figuresindicate that even people with conventional sanitation solutionsdo not escape the sanitation crisis.

In India:Lack of adequate sanitation in rural areas – Out of 108

households, 14 households have no sanitation in urban areas.

The UN World Summit on Sustainable Development(WSSD), held in Johannesburg in 2002, articulated severaltargets for the coming decade. Among them, “halve, by theyear 2015, the proportion of people who do not have access tobasic sanitation”. Since then the Millennium Project has furtherdefined what this huge task involves (UN Millennium Project,2005). No sanitation is dangerous.

The Framework for Action on Water and Sanitation,produced in conjunction with the WSSD, indicates close to6,000 children die each day from diseases related to inadequatesanitation and hygiene, and a lack of access to safe drinkingwater. “In China, India and Indonesia, twice as many peopleare dying from diarrheal diseases as from HIV/AIDS” (UN,2002).

Other indicators of health risks associated with poorsanitation are the frequency of related parasites that havehuman faecal origin – about 1 billion people are infected withroundworm and 700 million with hookworm. Uncontained anduntreated human excreta pollute groundwater tables, streams,lakes and coastal zones, helping to perpetuate the cycle ofhuman disease and upsetting fragile aquatic ecosystems bynutrient overloading and eutrophication.4. Land

As the international community focuses on climate changeas the great challenge of our era, it is ignoring another loomingproblem – the global crisis in land use.

Our use of land, particularly for agriculture, is absolutelyessential to the success of the human race. We depend onagriculture to supply us with food, feed, fiber and increasinglybio-fuels. Without a highly efficient, productive, and resilientagricultural system, our society would collapse almostovernight.

But we are demanding more and more from our globalagricultural systems, pushing them to their very limits.Continued population growth (adding more than 70 millionpeople to the world every year), changing dietary preferences

(including more meat and dairy consumption), rising energyprices, and increasing needs for bio-energy sources are puttingtremendous pressure on the world’s resources. And, if we wantany hope of keeping up with these demands, we’ll need todouble, perhaps triple, the agricultural production of the planetin the next 30 to 40 years. Meeting these huge new agriculturaldemands will be one of the greatest challenges of the 21stcentury. At present, it is completely unclear how (and if) wecan do it. If this wasn’t enough, we must also address themassive environmental impacts of our current agriculturalpractices, with new evidence indicates rival the impacts ofclimate change.

Already, we have cleared or converted more than 35% ofthe earth’s ice-free land surface for agriculture, whether forcroplands, pastures or rangelands. In fact, the area used foragriculture is nearly 60 times larger than the area of all of theworld’s cities and suburbs. Since the last ice age, nothing hasbeen more disruptive to the planet’s ecosystems thanagriculture. Our remaining ecosystems, including tropicalrainforests will be grossly affected if we double or triple worldagricultural production, while simultaneously coping withclimate change.

In the recent years, the well planned cities and suburbshave been developed and new more townships are also comingup with the construction of huge tallest buildings and towers.The large area of land has also been covered for establishingvarious residential colonies and commercial complexes. Ecosystem

1. Concept of EcosystemAn ecosystem is a joint culture of living organisms (plants,

animals and microbes) in conjunction with the non-livingcomponents of their environment (things like air, water andmineral soil), interacting as a system. These biotic and abioticcomponents are regarded as linked together through nutrientcycles and energy flows.

Thus, ecosystems can be defined by the network ofinteractions among the organisms, and between the organismsand their environment, they can come in any size but usuallyencompass specific, limited spaces (although some scientistssay that the entire planet is an ecosystem).2. Structures and Functions of Ecosystem=

The study of ecosystems mainly consists of the study of certainprocesses that link the living or biotic components to the non-living orabiotic components.

Structure means:(i) The composition of biological community including

distribution in space, sped number, biomass, lifehistory, etc.

(ii) The distribution and quantity of non-living materials.(iii) Gradient of conditions of existence.Function means:(i) The rate of biological energy flow.(ii) Rate of material or nutrient cycles.(iii) Regulation of environment by the organism and

regulation of organisms by environment.Structure of Ecosystem

(a) Abiotic Component: The components which are non-living are called abiotic components. They have a stronginfluence on the structure, distribution, behavior andinterrelationship of organisms.

Abiotic components are mainly of two types: (i) Climaticfactors: which include rain, temperature, light, wind,humidity pH, organic inorganic components, minerals etc.and (ii) Edaphic (resulting from or influenced by the soilrather than the climate) factors: which include pH, organic,inorganic components, minerals, etc.

(b) Biotic Component: The living organisms including plants,animals and micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi) that arepresent in an ecosystem form the biotic components. Onthe basis of their role in the ecosystem, the bioticcomponent can be classified into three main groups: (i)Producers, (ii) Consumers and (iii) Decomposers orReducers.

Producers, Consumers and Decomposers(i) Producers:

1. Autotrophic plants are main producers.2. These are capable to synthesize food from non-living

components.

3. In this chemosynthesis, bacteria are also included. Asthe green plants manufacture their own food, they areknown as Autotrophs.

(ii) Consumers:1. The animals lack chlorophyll and are unable to

synthesize their own food.2. Therefore, they depend on the producer, for their food.

They are known as heterotrophs. The consumers are offour types, namely:

(a) Primary Consumers (Herbivores) These are the animals, which feed on plants or

the producers. They are called herbivores. Examples: Rabbit,

deer, goat, cattle, grasshopper, etc.(b) Secondary Consumers or Primary Carnivores

The animals, which feed on the herbivores. They are called the primary carnivores.

Examples: Cats, dogs, foxes, snakes, etc.

(c) Tertiary Consumers or Secondary Carnivores These are the large carnivores which feed on the

secondary consumers. They are called the secondary carnivores, Example:

Wolves.

(d) Quaternary Consumers or Omnivores These are the largest carnivores, which feed on the

tertiary consumers and are not eaten up by any otheranimal.

They are called the omnivores. Examples: Lions andtigers.

(iii) Decomposers or Reducers:1. Bacteria and Fungi belong to this category. They

breakdown the dead organic materials of producers andconsumers for their food and release to the environment

2. The producers resulting in a cycling exchange ofmaterials between the biotic community and the abioticenvironment of the ecosystem reuse these simplesubstances.

3. The decomposers are known as saprophytes.Energy Flow in Ecosystem

Energy flow in ecosystem is in fact the calorific flow,which is the flow of energy through a food chain. In anecosystem, this energy flow has been quantified with relativeimportance of different component species and feedingrelationships.

In general, this energy flow state as follows:1. The Primary Producer is solar energy which is fixed photo-

autotrophs, which produces green plants.

2. Primary consumers, herbivores, absorb most of the storedenergy in the plant through digestion, and transform it into theform of energy they need, such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP),through respiration and is converted to body heat (an effect ofrespiration), which is radiated away and lost from the system. Theloss of energy through body heat is far greater in warm-bloodedanimals; hence, they must eat much more frequently than thosethat are cold-blooded animals. Energy loss also occurs in theexpulsion of undigested food by excretion.

3. Secondary consumers, carnivores, then consume the primaryconsumers, although omnivores also consume primary producers.

Energy that had been used by the primary consumers for growthand storage is thus absorbed into the secondary consumers throughthe process of digestion.

4. Tertiary consumers, which may or may not be apex predators,then consume the secondary consumers, with some energy passedon and some lost, as with the lower levels of the food chain.

5. Decomposers which are final link in the food chain break downthe organic matter of the tertiary consumers or any consumer maybe primary or secondary consumer which is at the top of the foodchain and release nutrients into the soil. They also break downplants, herbivores and carnivores that were not eaten by organismshigher on the food chain, as well as the undigested food that isexcreted by herbivores and carnivores. Saprotrophic bacteria andfungi are decomposers, and play a pivotal role in the nitrogen andcarbon cycles.

3. Overview of Food Chain, Food Web and Ecological Pyramid

Food Chain and Food Web: The terminology FoodChain was first introduced by the philosopher Al-Jahiz whowas the African-Arab scientist in the 9th century and later in1927 Charles Elton who introduced the food web concept in hisbook.

A Food Chain shows how the organisms are related witheach other by the food they eat. It is a linear sequence of linksin a food web starting from species that are called producers inthe web and ends at species that are called decomposers in theweb.

A food chain differs from a food web, because the foodchain only follows linear monophagous pathways, whereas thefood web is the complex polyphagous network of feedingrelations are aggregated into trophic species.

A common metric used to quantify food web trophicstructure is food chain length. In its simplest form, the lengthof a chain is the number of links between a trophic consumerand the base of the web and the mean chain length of an entireweb is the arithmetic average of the lengths of all chains in afood web.

Food Chain Length: Food chains vary in length fromthree to six or more levels. A food chain consisting of a flower,a frog, a snake and an owl consists of four levels; on the otherhand, a food chain consisting of grass, a grasshopper, a rat, asnake and finally a hawk consists of five levels. Producers,such as plants, are organisms that utilize solar or chemicalenergy to synthesize starch. All food chains must start with aproducer.

In the deep sea, food chains centered around hydrothermalvents and cold seeps exist in the absence of sunlight.Chemosynthetic bacteria and archaea use hydrogen sulfide andmethane from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps as an energysource (just as plants use sunlight) to produce carbohydrates;they form the base of the food chain. Consumers are organismsthat eat other organisms. All organisms in a food chain, exceptthe first organism, are consumers.

The food chain’s length is a continuous variable thatprovides a measure of the passage of energy and an index ofecological structure that increases in value countingprogressively through the linkages in a linear fashion from thelowest to the highest trophic (feeding) levels. Food chains areoften used in ecological modeling (such as a three species foodchain). Thus, Food Chain is a Sequence of Organisms inwhich Each is a Food for the Next.

Food Web: Overlap of Food Chains, as most organismshave more than one item on their menu. When all the foodchains in a habitat are joined up together, they form a food web.Although it looks complex, it is just several food chains joinedtogether.

Here are some of the food chains in this food web:

Grass → Insect → Vole → Fox

Notice that the frogs, voles and insects have more thanone predator, but the rabbits and slugs have just one predator.Here is an example of a food web:

This leads to some interesting effects if the population of aparticular organism in the food web decreases. Some animalscan just eat more of another organism if food is in short supply,while others may starve and die. This in turn can affect thepopulations of other organisms in the food web.4. Ecological pyramids begin with producers on the bottom(such as plants) and proceed through the various tropic levels(such as herbivores that eat plants, then carnivores that eatherbivores, then carnivores that eat those carnivores, and so on).The highest level is the top of the food chain.
