The UAB is renowned for its researchexcellence and the quality of its teaching, andit is a benchmark centre in Europe. The UABis located just 25 minutes by public transportfrom the centre of Barcelona, a cosmopolitanmetropolis on the Mediterranean coast. Themain campus is in Bellaterra, at the heart ofone of the main technological and industrialhubs of Mediterranean Europe.

The UAB caters to all aspects of universitylife. The campus is a true city of knowledge,with a population of almost 50,000: students,teaching staff, researchers and administrativestaff. It has all the services a universitycommunity needs.

University studies are divided into three cycles:bachelor’s degree, master’s degree andPhD degree.

The UAB divides the academic year into twosemesters. The first semester tends to beginin the middle of September and finish at theend of February, and the second semesterbegins at the end of February and finishes atthe end of June.

Registration is carried out just once a year, atthe beginning of the academic year.

The assessment system in Spain uses a scaleof marks from 0 to 10, with 10 being thehighest mark.

If you wish to access bachelor’sdegree, master’s degree,graduate diploma and/or PhDstudies, do not forget to find outwhether you need to follow theofficial recognition orlegalization process

The UAB offers over 80 bachelor’s degrees inall spheres of knowledge. Our bachelor’sdegrees are recognized for their quality, theircommitment to internationalization and theirpractical focus.

Some bachelor’s degrees are offered 100%in English.

How to apply for admission

You need to carry out the following formalities:

· Official recognition of the access qualification.

· Verification of the access requirements and/ortests with the National Distance EducationUniversity (UNED) *

· Process the pre-registration with the Oficinade Orientación para el Acceso a laUniversidad.

When to apply for admission

The application for admission (pre-registration)to bachelor’s degree studies is carried outonline in June, and some bachelor’s degreesalso accept applications in September.

* Some bachelor’s degrees can be accessed directly without taking the entrance tests, just with the official recognition of your upper secondary-school leaving certificate.

There are official university master’s degreesand UAB-specific master’s degrees. Theirpurpose is for students to acquire advancededucation of a specialized and multidisciplinarynature, geared toward both professionalspecialization and initiation into research.

Applications for admission are made directlywith the UAB. The applications are submittedonline, attaching your personal and academicdetails.

PhD programmes offer advanced training inresearch techniques, culminating in a doctoralthesis. They usually last three years, andconsist of preparing and defending a thesis.

International PhDs and industrial PhDs standout among the PhD programmes on offerat the UAB.

This involves a stay in various Europeancountries by the PhD student and theparticipation of teaching staff from internationaluniversities.

The doctoral thesis is carried out in theframework of a collaboration agreementbetween the university and a company.

The UAB has student exchange agreementswith universities worldwide, especially inEurope, Latin America and Asia. See map ofall the programmes.

There are currently three exchangeprogrammes, each covering differentgeographical areas.

Language courses

Intensive and extensive beginners’ andadvanced Catalan and Spanish courses duringthe academic year.

The courses provide the student with the basicknowledge necessary to understand thelanguage and be able to communicate fromthe first day of class.

The UAB provides its students with admissiondocumentation with which they should begin thevisa application in the Spanish consulate officeof their country of origin or the country in which theyhave legal residence.

Depending on the duration of the studies, the visascan be:

· Stay of up to 90 days (type C).

· Visa for stay of up to 6 months (type D code SSU).

· Visa for stay longer than 6 months (type D code SLU). In this case it is necessary to apply for a foreigner’s ID card (TIE), within one month fromentering Spain.

Non-EU citizens who reside in a European countryat the time of admission can regularize theirsituation in the Oficina de Extranjeros of Barcelonawithin one month from entering Spain. For this itis essential that the card from the European countryis still valid and that there is an entry stamp forSpain. This can be obtained at the police stations:Comisaría de Policía Nacional of the airport orComisaría of Rambla Guipúzcoa, 74 (Barcelona),within 72 hours from entering.

The law on foreigners is constantly beingamended, and it is therefore very important forfuture students of the UAB to contact the UABInternational Welcome Point (IWP) before theirarrival so that they can be informed about possiblechanges to the law.

Calculating accommodationand living expenses

In general, you should assume the followingmonthly expenses:

· Food: €250 to €350· Personal and leisure expenses: €160 to €220· Transport: €60 to €80· Accommodation: €250 to €500

TOTAL: €720 to €1,200 per month foraccommodation and living expenses

On campus: Vila Universitaria is a residentialcomplex of 812 apartments located on theUniversitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus.

Off campus: we have a support service tocontact different accommodation options offthe UAB campus.

Tuition expenses

All academic expenses are included under“registration”. In public universities this is aseparate expense from accommodation andliving expenses. UAB Employment Portal

UAB students have a set of resources at theirdisposal geared toward to help them findemployment and/or work placements relatedto their studies. All these resources areavailable at Treball Campus.

The main aim of Treball Campus is to helpUAB undergraduates and graduates to accessthe labour market through companies andinstitutions seeking persons with the righttalents or professional skills at the University.

How to apply for a work permit

Non-EU students who wish to work in Spainand have a job offer can do so by applyingfor a work permit. This permit only allows youto work for a maximum of three months,whether part-time or full-time, provided thisis compatible with your academic timetable.Its expiry is subject to the contract terminationdate and/or to the expiry date of the TIE(foreigner ID card), though it can be renewed.

Authorization of stay for holdersof a permit to study in anotherEU country

Those non-EU citizens who reside in a Europeancountry at the time of admission can regularize theirsituation in the Oficina de Extranjeros of Barcelonawithin a period of one month from their entry inSpain. For this it is essential that the card from theEuropean country is still valid and that there is anentry stamp for Spain. This stamp can be obtainedin the police stations: Comisaría de Policía Nacionalof the airport or Comisaría of Rambla Guipúzcoa,74 (Barcelona), within a period of 72 hours fromentering.

The regularization process can be carried outthrough the International Welcome Point, whichfiles applications on a weekly basis with the Oficinade Extranjeros of Barcelona.

Obtaining the ID card for studypurposes (TIE)

The TIE is a temporary-stay authorization cardvalid for the duration of the studies in Spain.This authorization is granted for a maximumof one academic year and is renewed annually,provided that the requirements stipulated in thelaw are fulfilled. This document regularizes the stayof those who are going to remain in Spain for morethan six months and have previously obtainedan open study visa.

On entering the European Union, you have amaximum of 30 calendar days to apply for the TIE.

All foreign students studying at a Catalan universitymust be covered by medical insurance. Theformalities to obtain medical insurance vary inaccordance with the country of origin.

You will be given a university card onregistration. This is all you need to access thevarious University services. The card is validthroughout your studies.

With the University ID number (NIU) thatappears on the card, and your password, youwill be able to access the UAB intranet anduse its services

Registration is carried out just once a year,at the beginning of the academic year.Registration is carried out in personin the Academic Management Serviceof the Faculty where you are carrying out yourstudies.

Payment of the registration is by direct debit*.If, before leaving your country, you needto make an advance payment, check thepayment methods with the AcademicManagement Service.

*All banks in Spain can open a bank accountfor you. Each bank has its own conditions,but one essential requirement is to presentyour passport or residence card.

Mentor (buddy programme) matches upinternational mobility students arriving atthe UAB with local students to help them joinin the academic, social and cultural worldof the UAB.

Tandem offers you the chance to practisedifferent languages and get to know othercultures and customs, by having a languagepartner and participating in the activities thatare organized. It is a useful way to practiselanguages yourself and help other people topractise your language at the same time.

The International Welcome Days areintended for the international studentsof the UAB. They consist of a week of activities,workshops and talks offering an initialintroduction to the academic, social andcultural life of the campus for recently arrivedstudents, and they are also a good wayof getting to know other UAB students, bothlocal and international. Two are held, onein September and the other in February,at the beginning of each semester.

Various trips to different places in Cataloniaare organized during the year, so that you canget to know Catalan society and culture betterand meet up with other exchange students.
