Meet Our Client: Felix Felix, formerly a materials case manager for a construction company, became a client of H.A.N.D. following a stroke that left him with impaired mobility and paralysis on the left side of his body. Tasks that once were easy, all of a sudden were quite difficult. For a couple of years now, Felix has received services from a H.A.N.D. attendant, who not only helps with basic everyday tasks like meal preparation, housekeeping, and setting clothes out for the day,

but also with helping Felix find creative ways to do things on his own.

“A home to me is a place where I can be secure and happy,” says Felix. “H.A.N.D. gives me the opportunity to be what I want to be at home.”

HAPPY New Year! It’s a common phrase that we share every January, but what does “happy” really mean. For most, it means a sense of well-being and control of your life, economic security, health, social connections and a sense of purpose. It’s no different for our clients, but due to aging, illness or accidents, happiness is sometimes a little harder to obtain. Thanks to your donations, our clients are one step closer to that elusive word, “happy.” Your donations helped provide in-home support and social services that enabled our clients to remain in their own home-safe, healthy and connected.

I have served on the board for the past three years and am proud of the direction that H.A.N.D. is heading as we start this new year.

I was honored to meet many clients as well as their caregivers at H.A.N.D.’s Client Holiday Party. I was able to learn their stories and understand how our services empower them to live in the comfort of their own home. I now better understand why H.A.N.D.’s staff takes such great care in placing the right caregiver with the right care receiver.

The Happy just keeps growing over the next 5 years thanks to an ambitious strategic plan. You can expect to see:

- An in-home volunteer program that will provide friendly visitors to address isolation and loneliness as well as increase our ability to provide personal care assistance for those with

little or no resources- A workforce development program to help improve client care as well as provide growth

opportunities for our attendants- Innovative programs and services to support clients and caregivers with a focus on

collaboration and teaching what we know and learn -Expansion of our services into additional counties

H.A.N.D. wishes you lots of “happy” in 2013 and hopes you will join us on our journey!

from the executive director

Board chair: John Griffin

State funding challenges and the growing need for H.A.N.D.’s services from more people in our community has caused the organization to embark on a bold mission that will empower the organization and the Austin community to serve those with the care they need, when they need it. Here’s to 2013!

How long have you been an attendant for H.A.ND.? For 20 years. I currently serve 6 clients throughout the week.

What advice can you give other attendants? Do all you can to enhance someone’s life - give of yourself to other people.

What do you love most about your job?I enjoy working with staff and clients. My questions are always answered and I have always had great clients. Why do you continue working with H.A.N.D.?I enjoy the environment, people, and helping others.

2012 holiday Party celeBration

Over 200 clients and attendants gathered at Our Lady of GuadalupeChurch this past December for our annual client and attendant holiday party.

This annual event brings together both clients and attendants to share some time, eat some good food, enjoy some entertainment, and thank our attendants and staff for all that they do.

Awards went to Ruby Tambunga, Maria P. Garcia, Lucy Jennings, and Felicita Barton for their dedicated service in 2012.

Special thanks goes to the Rockin’ Chair-ettes for their great singing and dancing, Pok-E-Jo’s for the fabulous food, our wonderful volunteers, and Delta Kappa Gamma who provided holiday gifts for everyone in attendance.

We are truly thankful for all our clients and attendants and look forward to the joys of 2013!
