Hand dyeing is simple and fun, requiring only basic household equipment. All of our dye types can be used for dyeing single colours in a skein, but they are also ideally suited to multi-colour techniques such as rainbow dyeing, yarn painting and making self-striping yarns. Rainbow dyeingRainbow dyeing is a broad term which is used to describe any technique in which fibres are dyed using a range of colours or shades applied at random to create a multi-coloured effect. The beauty of this style of dyeing is that it requires little in the way of accurate measurements and yet the results, whilst they may be somewhat unpredictable, are really exciting and dramatic. Whilst the methods vary slightly for the different types of dye, hand dyeing follows four simple steps: SoakingFirst yarn is wound into skeins to allow the dyes to reach all parts of it. Next the yarn is soaked in water to make it ready to absorb the dye. Depending upon the type of dye being used, you may need to add a “fixer” or “mordant” to the soaking solution to make the dye permanent or colourfast.applying the dyeDye may be applied in a variety of ways depending on the look you want to achieve. For single colour dyeing the dye is dissolved in water and the yarn is added to this “dyebath”. For rainbow dyeing, the dye solution

is applied directly to the pre-soaked yarn using bottles, pipettes, basters or simply by pouring from a container. Dye can be applied in stripes/spirals or completely at random to achieve different effects. Re-arranging the yarn can also change the overall effect: for example, piling the yarn randomly in a dish or laying it out in a horseshoe shape.Fixing the dyeSome fibres need heat as well as the fixing chemicals to ensure a good bond between the dye and the yarn. Once the dye has been applied the yarn is “cooked” briefly using either a microwave, hob, oven or steamer to provide the necessary heat. It is then allowed to cool before rinsing.Plant (cellulose) fibres can be dyed using Procion dyes without heating. The dye is applied and the yarn is left for several hours until the colours become permanent. This is useful for silk and delicate plant fibres which may be damaged by excessive heating. Rinsing and dryingOnce the colour has become permanent you rinse your yarn fibre to remove any excess dye and then allow it to dry. That’s it!

All our dyes are versatile, easy to use and fun to work with. However if you are unsure which to use here is our very quick and easy guide to choosing the best dyes for your project.

What fibres can i dye?• Kool Aid: Animal (protein) yarn & fibres (eg. wool, alpaca) only• Acid: Animal (protein) yarn & fibres (eg. wool, alpaca) only• Procion mx: All natural fibres (eg. wool, cotton, viscose, bamboo etc.)• Natural: All natural fibres (eg. wool, cotton, viscose, bamboo, shell, wood etc.)

Do i need fixing chemicals (mordants)?• Kool Aid: no, fixer is included in the sachet (just heat to fix)• Acid: yes, mild acid (white vinegar/citric acid) + heat• Procion mx: yes, mild acid + heat (animal fibres), sodium carbonate (plant fibres)• Natural: alum + heat for animal fibres, aluminium acetate + heat for plant fibres

What about colour range?• Kool Aid: the base colours generally very bright but these can be blended to produce more subtle colours• Acid / Procion mx: blendable to achieve an almost infinite range of shades• Natural: wonderful tonal shades and can be readily blended and modified

What if i need to produce predictable, repeatable colours?• Acid / Procion MX dyes are our recommended dyes for repeatable colours

Do the colours last?• Kool Aid: good colour fastness• Acid / Procion mx: very good colour fastness• Natural: variable depending on the extract, however, natural dyes age gracefully producing softer hues rather than fading unattractively

How economical are they?• Kool Aid: ideal for small projects, but can be expensive for larger projects – 1 sachet will dye around 25g–50g of yarn/fibre to a medium shade• Acid: very economical for dyeing animal fibres – 10g will dye as much as 1kg wool to a medium shade• Procion mx: very economical as only one set of dyes is needed for all natural fibres – 10g will dye as much as 1kg wool or cotton to a medium shade• Natural: very good in comparison to raw dyestuffs as the extracts are highly concentrated. 10g will dye between 200g – 1kg to a medium shade

if you have any questions or would like advice on a project or how to achieve a particular colour or shade please call, email or catch us at a show and we’ll be happy to help!

Which dyes are best for me?

Natural dye extracts

Our natural dye extracts are supplied in powder or paste form so avoiding the need to grind up bugs and barks! Suitable for use on any natural fibre, natural dye extracts are fully intermixeable and can be used for a wide variety of dyeing techniques, including rainbow dyeing, yarn painting, ikat and tie-dye.Natural dye extracts are very concentrated and a little goes a long way! 25g of Hue & Dye logwood purple natural dye extract will dye around one kilogram of wool - it would take 500g of logwood chips to give an equivalent shade. 10g of Earthues cochineal extract will dye 1kg of wool with enough dye left over in the dyebath for a paler second batch.

Kool Aid Dye-It-Yourself project kits Kool Aid

Kool Aid dyes

Kool Aid is a soft drink powder from America which is ideal for hand dyeing animal fibres such wool, alpaca and mohair. It contains citric acid so you don’t even need to add a fixer! You simply mix the Kool Aid crystals with water, apply them to wetted yarn or fibre and then heat it to make the dye colour fast. While not as versatile as our Procion dyes (it won’t dye plant fibres such as cotton for example) Kool Aid dyeing is a quick and easy introduction to hand dyeing.

Debbie offers a wide range of our yarns hand-dyed to order. If there is a particular yarn you would like from our range, please don’t hesitate to ask as most of our yarns can be dyed in any colourway on the website. Please note that each yarn takes up dye differently and so a colourway in one yarn may not look the same in an alternative yarn. If you would like to know how a yarn takes colour, Debbie is always happy to advise.

Why buy Brittany birch knitting needles and crochet hooks? Wood is warm, smooth and soft. It won’t drain heat from sensitive fingers the way aluminum and plastic does and so is ideal for knitters who don’t like or can’t use these needles. All wood used by Brittany comes from strictly regulated forests or small woodland owners in the United States ensuring proper environmental logging practices and selective cutting for maximum reforestation.
