K-3RD “VISITING” COUNTRIES IN CLOVER KIDS

Clover Kids

This year Britt Creative Clovers and Garner Lucky Clovers have 68 members. We meet once a month and “visit” a new country. We try foods from that country, talk about the language they speak, what traditions they have, where the country is located on our map, and what games they like to play.

Huge Success for Hancock County LEGO Teams!

CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES

This FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Season has been amazing. Our teams have been working overtime and it has certainly paid off. With the teams traveling over much of Iowa to attend regional competitions we have added several trophies and awards to our collection.

Team Flip the Switch attended Estherville in November. The Global Innovation award is a huge accomplishment and they will attend State FLL competition in the Presentation category. Only 1 team from each regional location was picked to compete at the state level. Flip the Switch built a recycling organization bin out of LEGO’s for the regional competition. Since than they have built a prototype and have cad drawings to make their invention real, as well as presented to recycling companies and the city of Garner.

FIRE and Extreme Chaos both attended the regional competition in Denver, Iowa. Even though we had some tough weather, we pulled through and FIRE got top spot

Teams Extreme Chaos & FIRE posing with their awards that advanced both teams to State Competition.

Team Flip the Switch won Global Innovation Award at the Estherville competition, advancing them to state in the Presentation category.

and Extreme Chaos also winning a spot to attend state. The judges loved their enthusiasm and their knowledge of all things FLL. Extreme Chaos wowed the judges with their idea of melting plastic sacks into little bullets that could be melted in a mold to make new toys. Team FIRE showed everyone how easy it is to recycle your batteries and placed bins all over North Iowa to help. FIRE also received the GIA award and will be presenting right beside Flip the Switch at state.

Cedar Falls was the location for the regionals where ICE attended. Even though they had some problems with their missions on the competition table, ICE pulled through with 2nd place overall. ICE created a reusable pizza box with dual purpose. They are stackable and can also be used as cutting boards. Their enthusiasm really showed through when one of the kids

lost their voice from cheering so loud. And last but not least LAB attended in Des Moines at the Science Center. What a great place to have a STEM competition. LAB wowed the judges with their Toy Swap they administered in November in Garner. Toys typically cannot be recycled, so LAB thought what is one kid’s trash might be another kid’s treasure. For their great idea they received honorable mention in the Presentation category.

We are so

proud of our teams and cannot wait to see what they do at ISU January 16-17.

Team FIRE presenting their solution to this year’s Trash Trek challenge.

Team LAB earned high scores in Core Values and received honorable mention for their Presentation.

Team ICE placed 2nd overall at the Cedar Falls location, advancing them to State Competition.

KID & PARENT DATE NIGHT

The Blockheads are a FIRST Tech Challenge team. They build robots from scratch and compete matches where they join alliances with other teams. The 2015-2016 challenge, FIRST®

RES-QSM, is modeled after rescue situations faced by mountain explorers all over the globe. Played by two alliances of two robots each, robots will score points by: “resetting” Rescue

beacons; delivering Rescue Climbers to a shelter; parking on the mountain; and parking in the Rescue beacon repair zone or floor goal. Robots may also score points by retrieving debris from the playing field and placing them in mountain or floor goals, and also by hanging from a pull-up bar during the last 30-seconds of a match. The Blockheads will be competing in several locations across Iowa and Nebraska. Andrew Dornbier, Jake Folkers, Dalton Hawe, Reece Smith, Erik Goll, Matt Barickman and Josh Stromer have been working hard at building the right robot to do the many goals for this year’s challenge. We wish them luck in all of their competitions.

What do tornados, ice, and earthquakes all have in common? It is just a few of the topics we will be learning about in the spring session of After School Kids Club. The kids will be engineering an earthquake proof building on a budget, do some core sampling and lava layering as well as creating a tornado in a tube. In our 8 week session the kids will take the lead and make important decisions about who will help out, what we will have for a snack, games, where to go on a field trips or people they want to have come in and talk. Besides learning

all about the weather they will learn leadership, teamwork, healthy eating habits and most importantly HAVE FUN! Be sure to get your registrations in by Tuesday, January 12th. Our session starts the week of January 25th and ends the second full week in March.

Use your painting for a gift and fair exhibit. No age requirement. Parents are welcome to paint. We will be painting this winter snowman. You will get to customize his eyes, nose, smile and hat and scarf color.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation announces the 2016 scholarship programs for 4-Hers attending or planning to attend college fall 2016. Even current college students are eligible for 4-H schol-arships. Currently 80 scholarship programs totaling over $73,000 will be awarded to 4-Hers across the state. The various awards range in amounts from $500 to $3,500. Former Iowa 4-Hers and current 4-Hers graduating from high school are eligible applicants. When asked about her scholarship experience a past Hancock County 4-Her says, “Applying for a State Level 4-H scholarship is a very extensive process. A bonus of the 4-H scholarship is the information I provided made me eligible for numerous

different scholarships, all different amounts. I was notified I was going to be receiving the Pioneer Scholarship and was asked to attend the ceremony one of the days at the Iowa State Fair on the stage in the 4-H building. It was the toughest scholarship I applied for but in the end one of the most rewarding ones I received.” Scholarships are available for Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa as well as Iowa’s private colleges and community colleges. 4-H Scholarship information, (can be sorted by school or degree) forms, and applications are available on the 4-H web page: www.iowa4hfoundation.org/scholarships
