Diane and Peter's garden is a delightto visit. Especially i you are a postmodern kitsch garden enthusiast. You nd everyday items takenout o their usual context andplaced neatly and art ully in the garden. Most o thedecorating materials come

rom op-shops and theResource Recovery Park inOamaru, which Diane and Peter visit twice a week. Diane, the chie gardener, reckons they nd them inthe shops crying out to be taken home.

As you stroll in, you are greeted by the gentle sound o wind chimes made o pots and pans. Te garden is dotted withmushrooms o various sizes, some madeo wood, others rom concrete. Your eyesare intrigued by the colour ul tea potsstacked in metal pot plant stands, plantedamong the owers.

Diane spends about six to seven hoursa week decorating the garden, while Peter

helps her with the ride on mower. Shechuckled when asked what other peoplethink about the garden. Peter, accordingto her, thinks she's an eccentric, but he issympathetic. Her amily members wholive in Auckland, enjoy her garden. She

keeps them updated with photos onthe internet o her latest garden

decorations.I a garden is meant to inspire

I have three points to make.Continuous growth is a lie1.Promoting continuous economic2.growth is a swindlePromoting sustained value, husbandry,3.and local responsibility would be thesound strategy to secure our childrens

    uture.

    Con nuou row h e.

Continuous growth isnt physically ormathematically possible and you know it.You may not know what the alternative is,but you know the truth. Its hard or evenrational scienti c people to experience thelie o continuous growth because it hasnot been our experience. Everything hasgrown like crazy my entire li e! However, being intelligent, rational humans, wecan plan or the uture using soundin ormation rather than assumptions.Growth in extraction, production andconsumption is a paradigm that is notnew and has come into play every time anew resource is ound. But, continuousgrowth is in act a lie. Growth is only continuous until the bust. Te growth inthe rate o use o a given nite resource isthe rst hal o a boom and bust cycle. Te

people at the peak o the boom side o thecycle would be making investments likecrazy to accommodate the record level o production and consumption. And thenthe rst year o the bust, their governmentwould put orward a stimulus packageto try to get the growth back on track. But the bust would happen anyway, and

investors would move on to the nextresource.o make this point very clear lets look

at a ew examples rom history. Terewas a great boom and bust in Moa meat,Kauri, otara, Rimu, ur seals, whales

Well sure, all o those nite resourceswere used up aster and aster until they

were gone and people were ightingover the remnants. But look at us now, were still growing right? Well, this isthe oil, gas, coal and mineral boom isntit? But wont it keep growing becauseo technology change? Answer: no. Te

rst things to bust or New Zealand willbe gas and oil, and the amount o energy

we use will steadily decline or the rest o this century. Tere are not any alternativeenergy sources or technologies that willsubstitute or oil and gas to keep theboom going. Te bust is coming, andthe choices we have now are about whatwe invest in that provides the best cost/bene t ratio or us and our children.

Which brings me to my secondpoint.

pro o n econo c row h w n e.I somebody is selling something as beinggood or you and your children, and itis not, that is called a swindle. Te realquestion o the day is what the national

strategy should be or dealing with theoil and gas bust. I there are people in thegovernment telling you that we need toinvest in dealing with our growth in trafcand trucks and air travel and housing andmineral exploration then they mightbe selling you a bridge in Arizona (thatmeans something real expensive that

wont be o much use to you.)Now, what i you dont believe me, anda lot o other scientists and engineers, that there isnt any substitute or oil andgas in the uture? What i you believein the past? What i you believe thatdevelopment will continue as it hasin the past, and somehow, somebody,

somewhere will provide us with morestu and more energy continuously, orever? What i you dont believe me that

continuous growth is a lie?Te question I have or you is this:

Which o our positions poses the biggerinvestment risk or our childrens uture?I we invest now in the illusion o

continued growth, say by building moreroads and bigger airports, and moreli estyle block properties, and Im right, then our children will have no problem atall with congestion and a lot o worthlessreal estate and a collapsed economy. I weinvest now in the transition to a lean, high value and efcient economy, say by re-

building our rail networks, re-urbanisingour cities, and supporting husbandry o our environment, and I am wrong, thenwe can always decide to build more roads

and dig up the conservation estate later. But i I am right, then our children willhave something to work with.

he swindle behind promotingcontinuous economic growth is that it is

really an extraction o wealth rom ourland to make other people rich and animpoverishment o our society as we getmore and more dependent on imported, mass manu actured Chinese stu .

Which brings me to my nal point.

    pro o n u ne v ue, hu b n r , noc re on b wou be he r e ecure our ch ren u ure.

Like a lot o people you might actually have the le side o your mind that knowslogically that continuous growth, and theimpact it is having is not sustainable, andshould not be the basis or our national orlocal decision making. However, unlessyou have already joined a transition townor something, you might not have a clearidea o what the alternative is. It is mucheasier to change your mind i there is amore attractive alternative. I propose toyou that as New Zealanders you already know the alternative. It involves earningMana or what you do well, doing right by your neighbours and customers, takingcare o the place and not making a mess. You already know how to do what you aregood at and take care o each other andthe land. Te rst and most major stepin the transition to a sustainable valueeconomy is to reject impoverishment. Isthis country really better o since going to

a global export and consumer economy? Is this place really better because we havecontinuously grown our extraction, our

John and ina wish readers a very happy estive season and the opportunity to

either catch up with work in the garden,or to sit in the garden enjoying pastlabours.

A er Christmas is over though, youneed to be turning your thoughts to sowingwinter greens and early spring annualssuch as Iceland poppies, snapdragons, wall owers, stocks and pansies.

hese annuals need to be sown inearly January, then pricked out, to beready or planting in late summer/early autumn. Tey need to be winteredover, then as soon as the days begin toget warmer they grow into nice largeplants and begin owering. I you donot sow your own seed, then look orthese annuals in garden centres in early autumn, when there should be lots instock. When these types o annuals areplanted in spring, they never grow as bigor do as well as when autumn planted asthey love a wintering over period.
