In 2011, the Alliance continued its mission of promoting Hampton Roads outside our region and working to attract companies to our com-munities. It is a challenging undertaking and one that many, even those who support the Alliance, do not fully comprehend. The work behind the scenes is truly all encompassing, requiring not only a working knowledge of economic development but the ability to deftly handle and anticipate clients’ needs, seek out the most promising markets and get in front of the right people - and above all, ongoing cooperation with our strategic partners.

That cooperation was never more impor-tant than in 2011, a year that saw eight an-nouncements for Hampton Roads – including the biggest announcement in the Alliance’s history. Securing the location of these com-panies requires traveling to U.S. cities and other countries, participating in trade shows, hosting special events, meeting one-on-one with corporate executives, and perhaps most importantly: follow up. The Alliance staff, with its combined years of experience, fully appre-ciates how crucial it is to stay in front of key decision makers.

Of course, none of what we achieved in 2011 would have been possible without the backing and active involvement of our investors from both the public and private sectors. It is their

generosity and cooperation that enabled our achievements. We want to express particular appreciation to our Board of Directors, Execu-tive Committee and Officers for their commit-ment to Hampton Roads and to our mutual goal of increased prosperity for the region.

We must also thank our cities and counties for their overwhelming support and advocacy of the Alliance’s business attraction mission. Our collaborative partnership with the localities of Hampton Roads is one we depend on, and we do not take this important relationship for granted.

2012 will no doubt bring its own set of chal-lenges, but there have been many promising signs that the economy is improving. The Alli-ance is determined to pursue all viable oppor-tunities as aggressively as possible – and we are confident that, with the continued support of our investors and strategic partners, 2012 could well prove our best year ever. In light of our recently launched 5-year fundraising ini-tiative, we expect our marketing efforts to be even more effective in the coming year. With your help we can meet, and even exceed, our goals for 2012-2016. We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: true regionalism has never been more critical to our success.

It is indeed our pleasure and our honor to work with all of you, and we remain confident in the Alliance’s ability to attract businesses to Hampton Roads from around the country – and the world!

the alliance: our singular role

The singular mission of the Hampton Roads

Economic Development Alliance (HREDA) is

to market Hampton Roads worldwide as the

region of choice for business investment and

expansion. The Alliance serves as the only

economic development marketing organization

solely charged with marketing and recruiting

new business to the region. As identified by

the core strengths of our region, the Alliance’s

marketing initiatives focus primarily on the fol-

lowing target industries:

• Aerospace and Aviation

• Maritime and Logistics

• Corporate and Professional Operations

• Modeling and Simulation

HREDA engages business leaders using a va-

riety of methods that range from trade shows

and conferences to direct mail. However, face-

to-face meetings remain the most effective

and important objective of the Alliance’s mar-

keting program.

In addition to marketing activities covering

nearly 40 percent of the U.S., the Alliance and

its partners have identified and traveled to the

following international markets:

• Canada • France • Israel

• Japan • Poland • China

• Germany • Italy • Korea

• United Kingdom

Every dollar invested in HREDA in the last five

years poured an extraordinary 11 new dol-

lars into our economy. There has never been

a more critical time for true regionalism to be

put into practice, and the Alliance’s business

attraction initiatives – both international and do-

mestic – represent the combined efforts and

cooperation necessary to benefit all communi-

ties throughout Hampton Roads.

“ the alliance not only persevered through tough economic times, but saw eight exceptional announcements in 2011. the marketing initiatives of the alliance are crucial to ensure that the region’s economy continues to grow and diversify.”Maurice A. Jones :: President & Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot

Page 12: hampton roads economic development alliance · In 2011, the Alliance continued its mission of promoting Hampton Roads outside our region and working to attract companies to our com

While the Alliance is well known for connect-

ing the region through its marketing and pro-

motional efforts, it also plays a crucial, lesser

known role: serving as a hub for business-

related research. Indeed, while the Alliance’s

Research department plays a large role in

educating prospective businesses about the

Hampton Roads region, they also strive to

compile demographic, statistical, and eco-

nomic information to be used by local busi-

nesses and municipalities.

The Alliance hosts a quarterly “Research

Roundtable,” in which a representative from

each of the 14 local Economic Development

Departments, along with private sector in-

vestors and other strategic partners, meet to

discuss tips for acquiring data and best prac-

tices for utilizing information to promote the

region. The Roundtable also rotates from city

to city in an effort to showcase interesting

assets that can be found throughout the area.

In between meetings, discussions continue

online through a portal designed specifically

for roundtable attendees. These individuals are

encouraged to share resources and promote

the region utilizing a standard set of data. Doing

so ensures that businesses do not receive

conflicting information from different localities

and companies throughout our region, but

instead see the region as possessing a unified

labor pool, economic base, and quality of life.

The Alliance provides a great deal of the data

that is given to our partners and prospective

businesses. Research services offered by

HREDA include, but are not limited to:

• Economic impact analysis

• Company research

• Compiling lists of companies in the region

according to size, industry, and location

• Cost of living data collection and analysis

• Demographic collection and analysis

• Mapping

• Real estate database collection and updates

• Regional facts and accolade collection

• Workforce and labor pool data collection

and analysis

Finally, the Alliance works with researchers at

the Virginia Economic Development Partner-

ship and other state agencies on an almost

daily basis. This relationship ensures that the

Alliance is properly promoting the assets af-

forded to us by living in CNBC’s “Top State for

Business,” and that state agencies are aware

of the many resources available to them in

Hampton Roads.

The Alliance plans to expand its efforts to

bring Hampton Roads together through re-

search in the coming years, and encourages

all public and private investors to get involved.
