Hampshire’s bustling towns have much to offer, from Farmers’ Markets to modern shopping precincts, and there is a wealth of picturesque, quintessential English villages dotted throughout our countryside. A few of these are highlighted here to give you an idea of what to see and do.
Alton, a thriving country market town built around a wealthy Saxon settlement, offers a delightful mix of historic buildings jostling with modern shops and arcades, and visitors enjoy the many markets and fairs.
Aldershot’s growth was determined by the establishment of a military camp. Discover the history of the ‘Home of the British Army’ at the Aldershot Military Museum.
The market town of Andover, with its attractive High Street and narrow walkways, dates back to Saxon times. Most of the town’s historic buildings, however, date back to the 18th century. The story of Andover’s unique history is a feature of the Andover Museum and Museum of the Iron Age.
Basingstoke, just off the M3, combines the historic ‘Top of Town’, with its old buildings, pavement cafés and bistros, with one of the best shopping and leisure centres in Hampshire, Festival Place. A heritage trail follows a vast collection of public art, designed over the last 15 years.
Visit the Farnborough Air Sciences Museum to discover the town’s role in aviation development past, present and future. Farnborough, the birthplace of British Military aviation, is well known for its International airshows.
Fleet gets its name from ‘La Flete’, the stream which runs into Fleet Pond, near the picturesque Basingstoke Canal.
Odiham is one of the most attractive small towns in Hampshire and has been a settlement since Norman times, with many attractive Georgian and earlier period houses. At nearby Greywell you will find the remains of Odiham Castle, built in the 13th century for King John.
Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs, the ancient market town of Petersfield was originally built as a Norman ‘new town’ at the end of the 11th century. The square hosts a market on Wednesday and Saturday. The town is a vibrant place to shop and eat out. Enjoy the art exhibitions and music at Bedales Arts in nearby Steep.
On the banks of the River Test, the prosperous market town of Romsey is a gateway to the New Forest. Take time to wander the medieval streets surrounding the magnificent Norman Abbey, where every Tuesday and Friday in the Corn Market you will find a traditional street market. Visit the Heritage and Visitor Centre which combines the history of King John’s House with the heritage of the area. Nearby is

the Palladian house of Broadlands, now the home of Lord Romsey, grandson of the late Lord Mountbatten.
At the heart of Test Valley, Stockbridge, with its picturesque High Street, reflects its early role as part of a drovers’ trail. Traditional groceries, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, picture and craft galleries and antique shops make for an interesting visit. Visit the nearby attractions of Danebury Hill Fort and Houghton Lodge Gardens and Hydroponicum.
Whitchurch was named after the ‘white church’ made from local chalk and flint stones. Visit the restored silk mill to see and purchase silk items still being made on the premises.
Grayshott village, with air ‘as pure as that in the Alps’, attracted authors George Bernard Shaw and Arthur Conan Doyle. Make time to visit Grayshott Pottery and Waggoners Wells Ponds.
‘So by coach to Lippock’ wrote Samual Pepys and he described how Liphook became a prosperous link village in the 1650s. At Old Thorns nearby, there is a championship golf course.
Hartley Wintney, a centre for antiques, is the proud possessor of one of the oldest cricket greens in England. The village is also the setting for West Green House Gardens, an 18th century house now owned by the National Trust.
With its past tradition of ale brewing, Horndean combines a mixture of old and new. Cycle, walk or ride through the Queen Elizabeth Country Park nearby. The source of the River Meon is near the picturesque village of East Meon.
The peaceful village of Kingsclere, with a stream passing through the centre, has received royal patronage since Saxon times. Watership Down is part of the downlands surrounding this village.
The largest village in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Liss, is on the River Rother, along which is a delightful easy access walk.
Overton, on the River Test, is mentioned in the Domesday Book and was a church manor from at least the time of King Alfred. The local church dates back to the 12th century and
sheep fairs held in the 19th century are the basis of today’s summer carnival activities.
The attractive village of Selborne is famous for its association with the 18th century literary naturalist Gilbert White. White constructed the Zig Zag path up the Selborne Hanger and this forms part of a circular walk. Gilbert White’s House and Garden can be visited throughout the year.
Whitehill and Bordon are set in heathland ecologically outstanding as a wildlife sanctuary. The area has been a centre of military importance since 1863. The Deadwater Valley Walk is in an area of heath and woodland rich in wildlife and easily accessible. Enjoy a full programme of events at the Phoenix Arts Centre, alternatively take the children to the nearby Birdworld, Go Ape! or Alice Holt Woodland Park.
The two Clatfords, Upper and Goodworth, are twin villages straddling the River Anton. Nearby attractions include Bury Hill, a 300 foot high hill fort offering good views across the Valley. The villages also provide a good starting point for walks into Harewood Forest.
Strung along three miles of the Wallop Brook, on its way to join the River Test at Bossington, are the Wallops; the three villages of Nether Wallop, Middle Wallop and Over Wallop. The villages boast a wealth of timber framed thatched buildings and attractive gardens. The surrounding area is ideal walking country. Nearby attractions include The Museum of Army Flying and Danebury Iron Age Hill Fort.
A warm welcome awaits visitors to the attractive villages of Broughton and Horsebridge, both ideal for walking and cycling with the Test Way and Clarendon Way passing through Broughton. Further along the road, you’ll find Horsebridge. The ancient boundary of the Deer Park, which John of Gaunt created, is right behind the village inn.
East Wellow is a village on the tourist trail, as Florence Nightingale lies buried in its churchyard. The most famous nurse in the world was brought up at nearby Embley Park. Her memorial stone simply reads, ‘F.N. Born 15 May 1820. Died 13 August 1910.’

Jane Austen, whose books are admired for their wit and social observation, was born and lived most of her life in Hampshire. She loved the county and it was here that she found the inspiration to write such classics as ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Emma’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’.
Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in Steventon, a village on the outskirts of Basingstoke. The 12th century Steventon Church where her father was clergyman stands almost unchanged from those days. While Jane lived at Steventon, she attended many dances at nearby large country houses, including The Vyne, now owned by the National Trust.
In 1809 Jane, her sister Cassandra and their mother settled in Chawton, near Alton, and the bicentenary of this event is being celebrated in the summer of 2009. In Chawton, you can visit Jane Austen’s House, where she wrote or revised her novels, and the Chawton House Library where her brother, Edward Knight, lived.

The south’s excellent road and rail links make Hampshire’s Countryside the ideal base for exploring some of the most beautiful parts of Southern England.
Why not visit the New Forest, a joy to visit at any time of year and discover the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, with more than 250 vehicles on show from early family cars to historic racing cars, F1 and rally cars.
Or seize the opportunity to visit the prehistoric site of Stonehenge, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World finalists. Take the time to relax on Bournemouth’s award-winning beaches or visit the medieval walled town of Southampton.
West Sussex offers many attractions including an exhilarating day at the races at either Goodwood or Fontwell Park, a visit to the National Trust property of Petworth House, with gardens landscaped by Capability Brown, or a trip to the award-winning Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
A day out exploring the cathedral cities of Salisbury, Winchester or Chichester is also an exciting option. Just a short drive will reveal the majestic splendour of Windsor Castle, the towering spires of Oxford or the hidden beauty of RHS Wisley. Alternatively test your fear threshold on some of the terrifying rides at Thorpe Park in Surrey.
Further information on the places mentioned can be found by contacting one of the Tourist Information Centres listed at the back of this guide. Alternatively go to www.visit-hampshire.co.uk to find more in Hampshire and www.visitsoutheastengland.com for the rest of the South East.

GOLD AND SILVER AWARDS FOR HOTELS AND GUEST ACCOMMODATION Silver Awards recognise exceptional quality at all levels and Gold Awards are given to the very ‘best of the best’.
If you choose to stay in any of Enjoy England’s quality-assessed accommodation, you can be confident that it has been checked out before you check in. For more information on the Enjoy England Quality Rose assessment schemes and the star ratings, go to www.enjoyEngland.com*VisitBritain is the national tourism agency, marketing Britain worldwide and England in Britain. Quality is a major element of VisitBritain’s strategy. They assess more than 23,000 accommodation businesses. These assessments are undertaken by Quality in Tourism on VisitBritain’s behalf.
COMPLAINTS If you have any issues that have not been resolved by the proprietor/manager and which you would like to bring to the attention of the assessing bodies, please write to:
For Enjoy England ratings: Quality in Tourism, Farncombe House, Broadway, Worcestershire WR12 7LJ
For AA ratings: The AA, 15th Floor Fanum House, Basing View, Basingstoke RG21 4EA
WELCOME HOST A nationally recognised customer care initiative which aims to promote the highest standards of service and a warm welcome for all visitors.
WALKING & CyCLING FRIENDLy These accommodation establishments are designated walking and cycling friendly. This means they provide services especially for walkers and cyclists such as packed lunches, a drying area for wet clothes, a safe place to store bikes and boots and local route information.
GREEN TOURISM BUSINESS SCHEME Businesses with a concern for the environment are recognised by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. The businesses’ efforts to operate in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way are graded with Bronze, Silver or Gold.
Hampshire’s Countryside has a wide selection of accommodation, including luxury hotels, friendly B&Bs, self-catering cottages and camping sites. Accommodation can be booked direct with the establishment or through the Tourist Information Centres. See back cover for details.
PRICES These are quoted per person, per night sharing double/twin room for serviced accommodation; or per unit per week for self catering establishments; or per pitch per night (pppn) for caravan and camping sites, and cover the period 1 January to 31 December 2009.
NEVER HAS QUALITy MEANT SO MUCH All the accommodation featured in this guide has been quality assessed by either VisitBritain* or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year. The national assessing bodies (VisitBritain* and the AA) now assess hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs) to the same criteria and award one to five stars. The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience.
WHEN CHOOSING yOUR ACCOMMODATION LOOK FOR THE QUALITy ROSE, THE OFFICIAL MARQUE OF THE ENJOy ENGLAND NATIONAL TOURIST BOARD RATING SCHEME.
The Enjoy England professional assessors visit every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in as you would, as a normal guest and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the breakfast and dinner and, most importantly, the cleanliness They also score the warmth of welcome. For self-catering accommodation, the layout and design of the accommodation and the range and quality of the kitchen
equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and most importantly, the cleanliness.
FOR SERVICED ACCOMMODATION, THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE SCHEMES – ONE FOR HOTELS AND ONE FOR GUEST ACCOMMODATION.
HOTELS have to be licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless categorised as a Metro Hotel) and have all rooms en suite or with private bathrooms. There are different hotel categories including: Hotel, Small Hotel, Country House Hotel, and Budget Hotel.
GUEST ACCOMMODATION CATEGORIES ARE: Guest Accommodation, Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses, Inns, Farmhouses and Restaurants with Rooms. They tend to be personally run by the owners.
GUEST ACCOMMODATION - DIAMONDS AND STARS The diamond ratings that were previously awarded to guest accommodation (B&Bs etc) have been replaced by stars. The new star ratings are designed to meet the greater expectations of consumers with regards to quality and facilities. Higher ratings are therefore more difficult to achieve than under the diamond scheme. In this guide you may find, for example guest accommodation that previously held a four diamond rating and has been reassessed under the new standards as three stars. It does not necessarily mean that their quality standards have dropped.
Hotels have to provide certain additional facilities and services at the higher star levels. Guest accommodation owners have to provide certain additional facilities and services at the higher star levels.
