A thriving country market town built around a wealthy Saxon settlement, Alton had the most valuable recorded market in the Domesday Book. Today the town centre offers a delightful mix of historic buildings jostling with modern shops and arcades near to attractive public gardens. Visitors enjoy the many markets and fairs held in the town – for information on these and other events see www.altonevents.co.uk.

Saxon artefacts such as the famous Alton buckle are on display at the Curtis Museum. Guided walks explore the town’s history taking in the 11th century St Lawrence Church, scene of the civil war ‘Battle of Alton’, and tell the sad story of ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’.

The Mid Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’ runs from Alton and Jane Austen’s House and Museum is in nearby Chawton.

Selborne is famous for its association with the 18th century literary naturalist Gilbert White. Gilbert White’s House & Garden can be visited throughout the year.

Set in an area ecologically outstanding as a wildlife sanctuary, the villages of Whitehill and Bordon combine history with a contemporary way of life. The area was a centre of military importance from 1863 when the War Office purchased 1,600 acres of training land.

The Deadwater Valley Walk is in a 50 acre area of heath and woodland rich in wildlife and easily accessible. Enjoy a full programme of theatrical and arts events at the Phoenix Arts Centre, alternatively take the children to nearby Birdworld, Go Ape or Alice Holt Woodland Park.

The picturesque market town of Andover, with its attractive High Street and narrow walkways dates back to Saxon times. Most of the town’s historic buildings however, date back to the prosperous 18th century when Andover was an important stop over destination for coaches travelling to London. Join a guided heritage tour or visit the Andover Museum and Museum of the Iron Age to discover its unique history. Experience many of the town’s exciting events and weekly street market every Thursday and Saturday in the High Street, or visit The Lights, the arts and entertainment venue in the Town Centre.

Stockbridge lies at the heart of Test Valley, its wide picturesque High Street reflects its early role as part of a drovers’ road. Traditional groceries, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, picture and craft galleries and famous antique shops, make for an interesting visit. You may even be lucky enough to catch glimpses of trout in the River Test which flows under the High Street. Walk or cycle along the Test Way or visit the nearby attractions of Danebury Hill Fort and Houghton Lodge Gardens.

Located just off the M3 motorway, Basingstoke has combined the historic ‘Top of Town’, with its old buildings, pavement cafés and bistros with one of the best shopping and leisure centres in Hampshire, Festival Place, in the town centre.

Step back in time at the Willis Museum, visit the Viables Craft Centre or walk the atmospheric street scenes at Milestones, Hampshire’s Living History Museum, that brings local history to life.

The area surrounding the town boasts historical treats including the ruins of Basing House, the impressive Highclere Castle and attractive National Trust property The Vyne. To the west of Basingstoke lies the attractive village of Overton and the silk mill at Whitchurch, a working museum, which produces high quality silk for costume dramas and stately homes.

Odiham is one of the most attractive small towns in Hampshire and has been a settlement since Norman times, with many attractive Georgian and earlier period houses, some with timber framing. The Basingstoke Canal passes through this area providing waterside activities and local boat trips, and at Greywell you will find the remains of Odiham Castle, built in the 13th century for King John.

The growth of the town of Aldershot was determined by the establishment of the Aldershot Military camp. Discover the history of the ‘Home of the British Army’ at the Aldershot Military Museum. Popular arts venues in Aldershot are Princes Hall and the West End Centre.

Farnborough, the birthplace of British military aviation, is well known for its International Airshow, which next takes place in 2010. Visit the Farnborough Air Sciences Museum to discover the town’s role in aviation development past, present and future. Fleet gets its name from ‘La Flete’ (meaning stream) from the stream which runs into Fleet Pond, located near the picturesque Basingstoke Canal which has been an important local waterway for over 200 years. It is a popular market town for eating out with a wide range of quality restaurants.

Hartley Wintney is known as a centre for the antique trade and is the proud possessor of one of the oldest cricket greens in England. The village is also the setting for West Green House Gardens, an 18th century house now owned by the National Trust.

Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs, this ancient market town was originally built as a Norman ‘new town’ at the end of the 11th century. The main square is home to the magnificent equestrian statue of King William III and hosts the twice weekly markets on Wednesday and Saturday.

The town has a vibrant artistic and musical life. Enjoy temporary exhibitions and music at Bedales Arts in nearby Steep.

Visit the Physic Garden, swim at the Taro Centre or Outdoor Swimming Pool, or stroll along the South Downs or in the hanging woods of Steep.

To the east of Petersfield, the National Trust property Uppark, in its South Downs setting, is well worth a visit.

Near Rowlands Castle is Staunton Country Park, with its 1000 acres of parkland to explore.

The village of Grayshott, with air ‘as pure as that in the Alps’, is also famous for its literary connections. Make time to visit Grayshott Pottery and Waggoners Wells Ponds.

Butser Ancient Farm Butser Ancient Farm is the world-renowned open-air museum for life in the Iron Age and Roman periods. All of the buildings are based on excavated archaeological evidence found in different parts of the country. Situated on the banks of the River Test, the prosperous market town of Romsey provides a gateway to the New Forest National Park. Take time to wander the pretty medieval streets surrounding the magnificent Norman Abbey, where every Tuesday and Friday in the Corn Market you will find a traditional street market. Visit the Heritage and Visitor Centre which combines the history of King John’s House and Tudor cottage with the heritage of the area.

Nearby is the Palladian house of Broadlands now the home of Lord Romsey, grandson of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten. Throughout the year Broadlands plays host to a range of craft shows, concerts and events. Alternatively splash about in the swirling leisure pools of Romsey Rapids.

The small village of Mottisfont to the north of Romsey draws visitors from far afield because of its National Trust owned Abbey, which houses the National Collection of old-fashioned roses. East Wellow is also on the tourist trail, as in its churchyard Florence Nightingale lies buried. For more information on surrounding villages please visit www.hampshirescountryside.co.uk
