Dear Members,
I hope you all had a wonderful start to the New Year. I am deeply saddened to inform you that we’ve lost a member of the Salamander family, Mr. Larry Packard. Larry, designer of Innisbrook’s four golf courses and a cornerstone of the Innisbrook community, was 101 years old. Please keep the Packard family in your thoughts.
February is full of events and activities at Hammock Beach. From rooting for your favorite team during the Super Bowl or Sochi Winter Olympics to a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day, there is no shortage of excitement at Hammock.
It’s also time to gear up for the Valspar Championship taking place at Innisbrook Resort March 10-16 on Larry’s most famous course, the Copperhead. Be sure to inquire with membership about how you can get your tickets and accommodations.
For more information about upcoming events at Hammock Beach, please contact your membership office.
Our public relations team has also been hard at work getting the coverage for Hammock Beach and our sister properties. We are excited to share these great stories about our properties:

Hammock Beach Resort on Florida’s Palm Coast offers sweet suites for golfers and families, TravelGolf.com

The 2013 New Year’s Eve Gala was truly a celebration for all and the beginning of what we all hope to be a great 2014. The New York Minute Band had everyone dancing and grooving to top hits throughout the decades.

ABOG UPDATE

B Y P R E S I D E N TC H A R L E S K E R R
With the proposal of a new hotel structure to replace the Lodge, we have a challenging year in front us. As the representative of the Membership, the ABOG will be fully engaged with Salamander and the Club to make sure that your voice is heard during this process.
Additionally, a member of the ABOG will be part of a Community Committee being formed by the Club. This Committee will also include representatives from Salamander, HB Club, the OHPOA and various HOA groups. As we are all aware, rumors travel faster than fact. So, until the new Committee can get to work, please remember that everything you hear in general conversation about the project may not be totally correct.
In the January newsletter we reintroduced you to the committee chairs and the ABOG members serving on the respective committees. The committees have all had an opportunity to meet and establish their new goals and objectives which the ABOG reviewed at their January 27 meeting. Goals and objectives of each committee will be posted on the member website for review. We certainly encourage Club members to participate on these committees. If you have any interest, please contact the appropriate chairperson. A summary of the committee meeting schedules will be posted as soon as they are finalized:
Social Committee Judy Jack [email protected] Committee John Bladel [email protected] and Beverage Jan McMaster [email protected] Relations Jan Cullinane [email protected] and Leisure John Kivi [email protected]
In 2013, we were able to fully appreciate the benefits of the additional funds available from the elimination of the socials. Going into 2014, the Social Committee is planning to build on last year by bringing you even more exciting events. With home construction and the success of the recallable membership program, we are seeing a number of new faces at the Club. We want to make sure that both old and new members are able to fully enjoy all of the upcoming events. So, we will continue to discuss ways to structure our events to accommodate everyone. Please check the calendar and make your reservations with the Membership office for those events that interest you.

As announced in 2013, new greens were put in at the Conservatory. The course re-opened for play the first week of September and, over the fall and winter, the new greens have continued to improve. Having the golf course in prime shape should be a big help in attracting new members to the Conservatory membership program. Late last year, Golf hired Steve Sorrell to be the new Greens Keeper. Steve has already shown that he is committed to the continued improvement of both the Ocean and Conservatory.
Another item that will be of particular interest to the golf members, the contract for new golf carts should be finalized very soon and carts delivered by the first part of March.
There are a few other noteworthy accomplishments that I want to mention. The Spa added an online reservation system that has helped both members and Spa
management in scheduling fitness classes. We hope to have a few new classes added to the schedule this year. The Tennis Facility has a full slate of member events scheduled for 2014. Please check the tennis event schedule for more information. Lastly, check out the Member Menus at all of the dining outlets. These are the best values in the area. Also, don’t forget about the weekly Chef’s Special at each restaurant.
As you know, the hours of operations for Delfinos, Sushi Bar, Loggerheads and Cigar Bar change frequently. These changes can be found in Marianne’s weekly eblast in the Food and Beverage News section in the links after “Hours of Operations Snapshot”. The same links can also be found on the member website’s Dining page, in the right column that also reads “Hours of Operations Snapshot”.

For better variety, work on your backhand slice...By Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness
Novak Djokovic and Stanislaw Wawrinka played an epic 5-set match during the quarters of the Australian Open last month. It was an exciting match with a distinct difference in backhand styles. Djokovic has a two-handed backhand while Wawrinka on the other hand, plays with a classic one hander. Although a high number of their backhands were drives or heavy topspin, each player used a slice to mix things up and keep the ball low. This month’s tip will take a look at the backhand slice.
No matter what type of backhand you have (1 vs 2-handed), the backhand slice should be a one-hander. The appropriate grip for the slice is the continental grip which is slightly between your forehand and backhand grips. With this grip, the racquet head will be slightly open on the backswing (picture 1). From there, you bring the racquet forward on a “slight” downward path to contact (picture 2). And finally at contact, the racquet moves forward with the follow through out towards your target (picture 3). Remember not to pull down too much in a chopping motion---you want the slice backhand to move through the court without too much under spin.
In developing the slice backhand, players begin to understand the options with the continental grip. With the slice grip you can develop other backhand options including chips and lobs.
For more backhand tips, please join us for our February “Stroke of the Month” on Wednesday, February 19 at 10am.

EXERCISE AND S E X U A L I T YBy Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness
In an article written by Dr. Laura Berman I quote “Exercise has a number of amazing, life-changing benefits. It can help prevent depression, heart disease, and diabetes, and it can also fend off weight gain and improve circulation and lung capacity. However, it might surprise you to learn that exercise also sets the foundation for a healthy, happy sex life. “
Here are some of the highlights of what exercise can do, via improved circulation you can expect to improve arousal, lubrication, sensation and excitement. Through the release of endorphins you can expect to lower cortisol levels bringing about mental clarity and enhanced mood and see an increase in testosterone levels which improves libido. Weight loss as a result of exercise will enhance self-image and confidences making you feel more attractive.
So when you think about what to get her or him for Valentine’s Day, by all means flowers and chocolate, but do yourself a favor and invest in some Personal Training! You will both be thankful later.

A BOOK PRESENTATION WITH AUTHOR
B I L L R Y A NMonday, February 10, 2014
St. Augustine Room l 3pm-5pm
The Hammock Beach Book Club would like all Members to join them when author Bill Ryan speaks about his book Grey Eyes. He will also be available for signing
Bill Ryan came to Palm Coast some 22 years ago upon Bill’s retirement from
the high technology photographic industry. Being retired and looking for new
things to do in Flagler County he authored the first website for the Flagler
County Public library and Flagler County. In doing the County Website he
became aware of our rich history and began his research.
Bill loves to discover untold stories. He writes in a first person style whereby
the real historical characters tells his own story which is based on research,
and original documents. Bill calls it “researched historical fiction”.
His first of five published books was “The Search for Old Kings Road” built by the
British in 1774, along which he writes that much of our Florida history happened.
Bill Ryan has never lost his love of technology and is currently working on
electronic publishing in the world of Kindle, Nook, and the multitude of book
reader systems that are altering the world of publishing almost overnight.
