Taverns are places where people go and enjoy themselves during weekends and after work. People often seem to enjoy taverns more than their homes; however, that is not the case with people leaving Thandiwe Mbele's tavern. Neighbours around that tavern have been complaining that this tavern is very noisy and their children cannot concentrate or do their homework. On 21 Jan 2014 Thandiwe and Sammy had their worst day when they received an unpleasant visit from Hammanskraal SAPS and Metro to shut down their tavern. While the owner of the tavern and workers were busy preparing themselves for Monday, police officers showed up with a document that ordered that the tavern be closed. It came as a shock to the owners and workers. Sammy, the co-owner and founder of the tavern, said: "I don’t know why the tavern is being closed as I have the legal documents (license) that says my tavern should operate." Thandiwe, who was not co-operative at the beginning, had no choice but to let the officials do their job in peace. However, the Metro was not there to negotiate as they said they had been informing the owner to shut down the tavern. According to our reliable source the tavern was closed some time last year, although they re-opened it again without the Metro's permission. Ever since the tavern opened in 2006 in Kanana Village north of Pretoria, the community surrounding the tavern has never had a good night's sleep. The community had opened several cases at the local SAPS of Hammanskraal though nothing could be done before they decided to go and seek help from the Metro Police. When we tried to talk to the community members, they refused to comment as they said they feared for their lives. However, according to close friends of the owners of the tavern, some of the community members are jealous of the money that is being made in the tavern as the complaints have nothing to do with noise pollution. Sammy Malete said not all community members had a problem, but only a few had a problem with him or Thandiwe (his wife). "It came as no surprise when the police said community members are complaining of noise pollution. We know who are those people who call themselves as the community as we’ve been trying to engage with them but failed because they never wanted to solve the matter." Some community members said the owner Thandiwe is very stubborn and does not even want to communicate with them. Sammy, the owner of other taverns in Kekana Gardens, said, "I’m very sad at what happened because I’m losing money as I spent too much money to stock the alcohol." He told Hammanskraal News that the alcohol that was confiscated was worth about R340, 000 in all. Constable Mmakgotso Mphenyeke of Hammanskraal SAPS said the tavern has been operating on municipal land. Cases of fraud and operating with a fraudulent liquor license have been opened at the station and the owner of the tavern (Thandiwe) has been arrested and will appear in court soon on charges of fraud. 12 FEBRUARY 2015 OUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER - ONS GEMEENSKAPSKOERANT - DITABA TSA RONA Scholar Improvement Facilitation Program PTY (LTD) Let us help you improve your mathematics and science marks. The Department of Education in North West province has urged parents of learners to participate in the coming School Governing Body (SGB) elections. On Thursday 5 February MEC Wendy Matsemela offi cially launched the SGB elections, which will run from 6 to 28 March 2015, at Mmabatho Convention Centre. During an interview with Hammanskraal News, spokesperson for the Department Mr Brian Setswambung said the SGB played a fundamental role in the daily running of the school. “These elections are very important because we have observed as the department that where there is a strong governing body at the school there is a strong management and the results of the school are also good,” said Mr Setswambung. He further explained that it is very important for parents to register for the SGB elections because their role is to look after the governance of the school and to promote school excellence. “In the province 250 000 candidates will be elected to carry out the duties of the SGB for the next three-year period of volunteered services,” he said. The elected candidates will be responsible for the admission process of learners within schools, for the provision of resources and transformation in schools and to ensure smooth management to serve the interests of

the learners and the community. Also, the Department has urged parents and legal guardians to update their details at their respective learners’ schools and has also encouraged intensive community participation in the election. “SGB elections are a sign of the seriousness of how the will and interests of the learners are taken into account by communities together with the Department,” he said. Stakeholders who are eligible to take part in the SGB elections are mainly parents or guardians of children at school and community members. The principal is always a member of the committee by virtue of his/her offi cial capacity. Out of 1 500 schools in the province that will participate in the SGB elections, about 130 in Moretele district will also take part. Moretele consists of areas such as Bosplaas, Dirtig, Lefatlheng, Mathibestad, Makapanstad, Moeka, Kgomo-kgomo and Tladistad, to mention few. According to Setswambung, participation forms will be distributed to parents at schools to fi ll in and return to the school. In addition, Setswambung revealed that the Independent Election Commission would be part of the monitoring process during the SGB elections. The Department will also deploy its offi cials to monitor the elections in all the schools in the province.

SGB ELECTIONS TO BE HELD NEXT MONTHBy Angie Ramahanedza

By Sebushane MoobiIt has been expected from days gone by that men should be pillars of the community and nurture the youth. Some men do not live up to the dignity they are given, but the respect that they get from their homes and communities is worth their while. Still, others misuse the powers that nature had offered. Men have the natural honour that they are born with that has to go along with responsibility. They are therefore destined to respect, honour and nurture the youth to adulthood, especially the boy children. It had been noted with concern that some of the male fi gures in the households do not concern themselves over the welfare of the boy children. Some of the Hammanskraal News male interviewees like Mr. Samson Ikaneng from Tloonane reasoned that men are the pillars and protectors of the community and should behave accordingly. He stated that they should help educate the youth and assist with the moral regeneration of children in the community. He added that divorces and separations should not get into the way of child development and growth. He relayed that the time is past when men were used as scarecrows in households and should rather be the dignifi ed heads of families.Ikaneng told Hammansraal News that fathers should befriend their children more and share their experiences with them. He advised that they should mentor them and allow them to explore life and make mistakes so that they can learn. He further voiced that his experience taught him to caution and sensitize the youth with love and respect. He said that in any family a father fi gure must give praise where it is due to anyone who has done well. He emphasized that it is small things that count. “Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves,” he quoted. He added that men should also show interest and gratitude for what their children do. He sadly said that he had realized that some men tend to be more subjective than objective and that should be vice-a-versa.On the other hand, Mr. Solly Nnane of Voyentin said that he believed in men who are exemplary. He referred to men who would expect their boy children to be on the straight and narrow when they do the opposite. He explained that it happens that some men would go on a drinking spree and come back home late at night but expect their boys to behave positively. He voiced the opinion that some men feel threatened by the issue of equality between the genders. He said that some men take it that their manhood had been taken away from them by the new laws. Nnane emphasized that if every man could accept the changes, move along with the times and be positive, life in different families could be enjoyable and fruitful. He said that he fi nds it befi tting for every man to support their families and communities for the betterment of the country. Nnane relayed that men should learn to solve their household problems and stop the vanishing act. He explained that he also once vanished without a word from his family during a confl ict. He said that he feels bad about it and had since turned over a new leaf after building a new family. He further said at that time, he also threw away the old Sim card for a new number during his disappearance. He concluded that men have their weaknesses and have to learn to turn them into their strong points. Mrs. Virginia Kgopa, Nnane’s former wife and a mother of two,

corroborated the story and added that she had it tough without her husband. She explained that they were customarily married and that her hubby disappeared for three years without a trace. She said that she even tried the man’s work place without success. She said that men should stop the vanishing act and solve their marital problems. She further said that men should stand their ground and be positive and boys would grow into better men. She concluded that they (men) also have to be loved and respected so that they can anchor, pillar, protect and adore their families.

RAMOTSE SENIOR CITIZENS OUT IN THE COLDHammanskraal News had run an article previously on Ramotse elders being left out in the cold on the day they are to receive their pension grants. The same thing was done on 11 June when they were found seated on the ground in these cold months of the year. They complained that they have to be early to receive their grants. These senior citizens cried foul that their municipality does not respect them. Some of them stated that they arrive at the civic as early as 6h00 to queue for grants. They complained that they are subjected to the elements of nature. They further told Hammanskraal News that rain, wind and cold are their worst concerns. One of the elders said that they have to take along blankets to keep warm. She further stated her concern in that some of them come from as far as Marokolong to queue for the grants. On the other hand, these grannies wait up to 11:00 for the grant vehicles to show up.They said that it becomes worse in rainy weather and that the nearby school had chased them away. They reiterated that it was also a serious disturbance to the smooth running of the school. One of the grannies suggested a tent that was vehemently denied by saying that it would deter progress as they needed a hall. On the other hand, they stated

that the hall that had fallen from poor workmanship was also small for all of them. One of them stated that they needed a bigger hall and that they also had to bring along chairs. Still, these grannies maintain that their rights as senior citizens are being violated. One old lady told Hammanskraal News that the crippled and the sick were also not catered for. She reiterated that the area needs a hall with better facilities. She relayed that they had to travel to Temba to apply for the grants and that it was expensive. She said that the suggested multi-purpose centre could come in handy for them. She said that she was of the opinion that services should be brought to them. She explained that if there was a centre of the stated calibre, their children would also get help from the neighbourhood. A number of these elders told Hammanskraal News that some of them are sick, while others are crippled and have to wait for long hours for their grants.

W hen he started his music career as a performer at furniture stores in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas people never took him seriously. Today his story has totally changed for the better from what people had imagined. Dr. Malinga is passionately known to his supporters and fans as a renowned musician and a performer all over South Africa. When he signed with Kalawa Music Records in 2011, he collaborated with different artists with the likes of Vetkuk vs Mahuta, Dj Oskido, Black Motion and Uhuru, just to mention a few. Since then, his music career has been on top of the mountain and people all over South Africa like mostly his kicks when he performs, he calls it “Linga Dance” “wa di jaja mos”. Dr Mlinga’s new album titled “First Injection” was released last year October, and it has been nominated for the 14th Metro fm Music awards under the category of the best new artist. Though he has been performing and collaborating with other musicians, this is actually his fi rst album under Kalawa Music Records. He will be up against artists like Musa, DJ Dimplez, Duncan and Chymamusique. Speaking to Hammanskraal News, he expressed his overwhelming joy at being nominated for the awards. “Right now I cannot begin to express how I feel but what I know is that this is a great thing in my life and in my music career,” explained Dr Malinga. He

believes that he will come home with the award and he has pleaded with the community of Hammanskraal to vote for him in order for that to become a reality. “To vote for me they should dial *120*588# under best new comer and if I win the award it will not be only for me but my fans as well so they should vote more,” he pleaded. Dr Malinga has performed at big events such as ANC birthday celebrations as well as election rallies. In 2013 he performed at the South African Music Awards held in Sun City in Rustenburg. As he calls himself an artist, currently he has an acting role in SABC comedy Gauteng Maboneng. Metro FM says the awards have a rich legacy because they are the only awards in the country that truly celebrate the music talent South Africa has. This year’s theme for these awards is “Celebrating greatness,” because they believe that each and every musician in the country has some elements of greatness in them. The awards will cover genres such as song of the year, best urban jazz, best female and male album, best kwaito album, best Hip-Hop Album and gospel categories. All categories are 21. The station has regarded the awards as a huge success since its inception. The awards will be held on the 28 February at the Durban ICC. “I can’t wait for the night of the awards and people must look out for my outstanding attire,” laughed Dr Malinga.

His car was chopped into scrap metal after it was stolen from his yard in the early hours. Temba police were alerted by community members who saw three suspects chopping a red Golf in the bushes. According to the police the three suspects used axes to chop up the car after they stole it in the early hours from its owner.

Constable (Cst) Herman Moremi of Temba said that a case of possession of stolen motor vehicle has been opened against three suspects. According to police the suspects stole the motor vehicle around 4am, before towing it with another one to the bushes near a place called Marikana in Soutpan. “The suspects then decided to turn the bush into a ‘chop shop’ and started chopping the motor vehicle before some of the community members saw their evil deeds.” Police said that they are very thankful to the community of

Marikana for the tip-off which led to the arrest of the suspects and would like to appeal to them to continue to report suspicious activities or vehicles in the bushes. During the arrest police also managed to confiscate the car that was used to tow the stolen one.According to police, one of the suspects apprehended is known to be a mastermind of car theft and this is not the first time he was arrested for the same offence. The other two accomplices claim that they were asked assist to chop the motor vehicle by this mastermind. When Hammanskraal News went to the police station, the mastermind’s clothes and face were all covered by stains. Police said that the motor vehicle engine and other parts were taken to another woman’s place when the suspects were arrested. One of the towing operators who works with the police told Hammanskraal News that in a month they have managed to find about eleven cars in the bushes between Ratjiepane and Mogogelo. He further said that they sometimes find carcasses of stolen cattles which have been killed and had some of their parts removed. He advises community members to be on the lookout when passing these areas and to inform the police when they witness such actions taking place. Cst Moremi appeals to members of the community to stop parking their motor vehicles in the streets during the night. This is after two cases have being opened for separate incidents of pointing of firearms, robbery and stolen vehicles. According to Moremi the first incident took place at Leboneng around 20h20 when a male and his lady friend were seated in a VW Golf in the street. It is alleged two suspects approached the driver’s door and cocked the revolver pistol, ordering the two occupants to get out and lie on the ground in front of the motor vehicle. He said that while the two victims were still on

the ground, the other suspect tried to switch the engine on but could not and that was when he ordered the driver to show them how it was done before ordering the two victims into the back seat of the motor vehicle. “The suspect drove around Leboneng until 20h50 and then robbed the two occupants’ cellphones and cash before leaving them at Drygin Village which is a few kilometers away from Leboneng,” driving off with the motor vehicle. The second incident took place at Eersterus Block C when a boyfriend and girlfriend were sitting in a car parked outside when they were approached by three suspects and ordered by one of them to get out and sit in the back seat of the VW Polo. Moremi said that the three suspects picked up the fourth suspect on the road and drove off to Winterveldt in Mabopane while the victims’ hands were tied at their backs with cables. It is alleged the suspects then went to another place where they removed the tracker alarm system from the car while the owner of the motor vehicle watched helplessly. Police say that the four suspects then robbed the victims of their cellphones before demanding the driver’s bank card and PIN number and one of them went to the bank, withdrawing R3000,00 from his account. The suspects then drove off with the victims before leaving them in that area and driving away with the motor vehicle. Moremi advises community members to avoid parking in the streets in the evening - they must rather park inside a yard or find safe places to park to avoid being robbed if they are couples who want to enjoy quality time together. He told Hammanskraal News that what is worrying is that in both incidents all victims were robbed around eight o’clock, the same model of firearm was used and the two hijacked vehicles were both VW model cars.

NEWS IN A FLASHAt least on fi rst glance, it would appear that way. On Saturday evening, Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced its decision to postpone Nigeria’s national election scheduled for February 14th. These elections were widely expected to be Nigeria’s closest electoral contest yet, between the increasingly unpopular Goodluck Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and retired General Muhammadu Buhari of the All People’s Congress (APC). These elections represent a serious challenge to Jonathan’s PDP, which has won every election since 1999.The reason for the delay? According to INEC, Nigeria’s security services say they need at least six weeks to launch a major offensive against the Boko Haram insurgency in the northern part of the country, that they could not guarantee security for the February elections. The new date for the presidential elections is set for March 28th.(www.washingtonpost.com)

HOW I MADE IT IN TENNISMONEY OR NO MONEYBB MALULEKA

KARABO MOHOMESome sports are believed to belong to other races; however, that perception is slowly changing with our government constantly rubber-stamping the need for transformation in different sporting codes. Some black people believe that tennis is a sport played only by white people. However, this is not the case. A Hammanskraal learner has proved just that after representing the Gauteng Province (GP) tennis squad at last month’s South Africa School Championship Games held between 8 and 16 January at the University of Pretoria. Tebogo Monama (17) of Hammanskraal West Secondary School was overwhelmed after reaching the finals of the doubles and mixed doubles tennis competitions. Monama said that the reason he is happy is that before he had been chosen for the GP tennis squad he had financial problems, however with assistance of ‘holy samaritans’ he made it. “I still have no racquets to play with but one official by the name of Mashilo Phala, at the games lent me hers when I represented my province.” During the interview, Monama told Hammanskraal News that he is very thankful for his coach, Simon Tlhatlha of Hammanskraal Tennis Club, who bought him a pair of new takkies because he did not own as pair before

going to the school’s championships. “I really appreciate the support that I have received from Tlhatlha, as well as my principal George Matebefe, who always made sure that I had transport when I had to go to trials before I qualified to represent the province,” said Monama. Monama added that it was not easy during the games because he had to play three games per day, so it was very exhausting. However, he stayed focused each and every game. He told Hammanskraal News that he prepares hard, training Monday to Friday from 16:00 until 18:00. “I am motivated by the support I receive from my family even though they don’t have money. They always encourage me to be the best person I can be in school, drama class and tennis,” he explained. Monama was chosen as the best player of the day during the tournament. He said that he wants to see himself playing for the SA tennis squad; however, he maintains that he is halfway to reaching his goal of playing in the doubles. “I want to tell other youth that they must not allow a lack of money to stop them from achieving their dreams because nothing can stop talent. If one is gifted there are people out there who see potential and will provide assistance”.

Small teams are fighting with everything they have to make sure that they get promoted. The South African Football Association has offered to help these young players to make their dreams of becoming professional players a reality. However, they have a serious challenge when coming across other divisions such as Castle and ABC Motsepe League before they can even get to the Premier Soccer League. It was this Sunday when the log leader’s Leboneng FC took on the young guns of Kekana Gardens called Blue Birds, who went on to destroy the unbeaten run of Leboneng FC. It came as a shock when the Blue Birds came blazing in the second half before taking a lead through Motepu who is an attacking midfielder. After a sloppy defense from Leboneng FC, who believed that the player was in an offside position. However, the referee allowed the goal and play continued with the players trying to challenge the decision. According to a close source, the referee allegedly said that the challenge with HALFA officials is that they took a bribe before the game started. Because of being paid poorly, this is a reality. The referee added that it is now very common for officials to make mistakes in a

game. This didn’t sit well with the Leboneng FC players who are still questioning the official’s decisions. One of the senior players as well as a team manager, Keere Khitsoane, said what happened at the weekend was just a mediocre decision from the referee.According to Khitsoane, it is believed that the match official Puma, as he is known to Hammanskraal News, wanted to sabotage the unbeaten run of Leboneng FC, as that goal was clearly offside. That kind of decision was not expected to be made by the referee. However, players need to lift their heads up and focus on their next game. Players should by all means live up to the faith shown by their coaches. It is always a challenge when you are the hunted and not the hunter. However, players should try by all means to ensure that they continue their run this week. Hopefully HALFA can provide a match official who will not take sides this week. What hurt the team the most was that the game ended before the full 90 minutes. However, the referee blew the whistle in any case. It is unfair for one match to end 15 minutes ealier than the given game time. Hopefully this will not be the case in the future.
