CLASSICAL THEATRE COMPANY

BOLDLY RE-ENVISIONING CLASSICAL DRAMA

OUR HISTORY

The Classical Theatre Company was born in late 2006 when, inspired by a casual conversation about Houston theatre at a Christmas party, theatre professional John Johnston came to the conclusion that there was a distinct niche to fi ll in the local community. Recognizing the unwavering popularity of classical drama both regionally and worldwide, as well as the noticeable lack of year-round classical theatre in the Bayou City, he began traveling down the path that laid itself before him.

For its 2008-2009 inaugural season, CTC audiences enjoyed two very successful productions and a full three-installment reading series, highlighted by a reading of Benedictus and the inaugural production, Shylock, the Jew of Venice, an adaptation from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Following up its achievements the next season with a bold one-man adaptation of Hamlet as well as the smash hit production of Moliere’s Tartuffe, CTC continued to garner high praise from its audiences and critics alike.

In a landmark 2010-2011 third season, CTC added a third full production to its Mainstage including a co-production with the Prague Shakespeare Festival of As You Like It and King Lear. These Shakespearean classics combined local Houston and European artists with runs of the shows both in Houston and in Prague to rave reviews in each venue.

Using the clear need for the CTC’s services as well as its exciting young staff as its engine, the company has been able to garner support in many vital areas necessary to the successful achievement of its mission. As this support continues to build, we at the Classical Theatre Company look forward to making the future of classical drama as bright as its past.

OUR MISSION

The Classical Theatre Company is dedicated to boldly re-envisioning classical drama on the stage, in the community, and in the classroom through engaging and enlightening plays that brings them new life and relevance while maintaining the integrity that the works deserve.

OUR VISION

The Classical Theatre Company presents high-caliber professional productions of works from the classical canon. These time-honored plays, which were written at least one-century prior, are presented by outstanding local, national, and international artists as a critical component to the well-being of Houston’s cultural community. As Houston continues to develop its reputation as a nationally recognized city for culture and arts, a dynamic year-round, professional classical theatre is crucial in shaping Houston’s diverse cultural landscape.

NOTES ON THE PLAY:

In our fi rst meeting, John Johnston confessed, “You do not simply choose to take on a production like Hamlet; Hamlet fi nds you.” And indeed Hamlet did fi nd him one evening as he watched actor Matthew Keenan and actress Christianne Mays jump out of the fi nal scene in CTC’s previous production of Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen and into the closet scene in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet taking on the personas of Gertrude and Hamlet. Once the initial casting was apparent, Johnson began to search for a “hook” in which to set his play.

… Then came June 7, 2013—the day after Edward Snowden decided to blow his whistle with one of the United States’ greatest leaks to The Guardian in a video describing the extensive eyes and ears the National Security Agency has over Americans.

After working for the NSA for years, Snowden decided it was time to expose the government and their capabilities of tapping into our telephone calls and personal emails.

I don’t see myself as a hero because what I’m doing is self-interested: I don’t want to live in a world where there’s no privacy and therefore no room for intellectual exploration and creativity… I can’t in good conscience allow the U.S. government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building. Edward Snowden, The Guardian, June 6, 2013

Edward Snowden immediately became an icon. Finally, bipartisan parties agreed on a topic to discuss. However, from the left to the right, opinions varied on whether Snowden should be considered an American villain or hero. This dualistic fi gure seems to parallel the views on Hamlet. Hamlet is not an apparent protagonist. Some audiences see him as a selfi sh and immature young man who kills almost every one he comes in contact with; others see him as a victim of melancholy and usurpation. These complexities in both Snowden and Hamlet as misunderstood and rather complex individuals drove CTC to explore the world of an individual under surveillance.

Just as people sought out Snowden in Hong Kong and kept a watchful eye on him for the week he was trapped in Moscow International Airport, so too does Hamlet feel as if he is trapped in a Denmark prison under the lens of his Uncle’s court. There are eyes and ears behind every turn, every arras. He scurries around the Elsinore castle as the higher-ups decide what to do with him, just as America waited for action from Putin and Obama. This claustrophobic world where every action is closely watched and debated correlates with the life Edward Snowden was succumbed to this summer. Each man’s actions infl uenced a nation.

In Classical Theatre Company’s Hamlet, we intend to divulge into the deeply rooted layer of the human conscious; to tap into the deep seeded root of paranoia that fl oats in us all if we have the feeling we are being manipulated, or perhaps always being watched.
