  • Thank you for purchasing this lesson! I am positive you and your students will find it to be an engaging, fun,

and informative lesson one of Americas greatest Founding Fathers! This document will explain the details of

the lesson as well as differentiation strategies and various ways the lesson can be modified to fit your class.

The lesson is designed to be accompanied with selected songs from Hamilton the Musical. Songs from the

album can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Youtube, and various other online sources (and of course

on CD). A couple of the songs contain very brief profanities. I feel they blend right into the flow of the songs

and are not prominent enough to affect using them in my classes. I encourage you to listen to each song before

using them in class, however, and making your own decisions. I believe the songs are too powerful to avoiding

    simply for that reason.

I teach 90-minute block classes and can just about fit this all into one period. I use about 30 minutes of music,

occasionally a short Youtube clip, and ask lots of questions and have students do lots of quick shoulder-

partner or think, pair, share talk.

The PowerPoint covers all of Hamiltons life from his upbringing in the Caribbean through his death in his duel

with Aaron Burr. The slides match up with the included graphic organizer notes page. You could also have

students copy the notes directly into their notebooks. I use the graphic organizers simply because there is a lot

of information and I dont want students spending the whole time copying notes.

Be sure to look at the notes section of each slide for additional details about that slide, points to include,

corresponding songs or videos you could use, and more.

The song listed below are included on the graphic organizer page and have corresponding slides in the

PowerPoint. Additional sings that you might want to include are located below as well. Songs with an asterisk

have brief instances of explicit language.

    Alexander Hamilton Disc 1, Track 1 (3:57)

Right Hand Man Disc 1, Track 8 (5:22)*

    Non Stop Disc 1, Track 23 (6:26)

    Cabinet Battle #1 Disc 2, Track 2 (3:36)*

The Room Where it Happens Disc 2, Track 5 (5:19)

The World Was Wide Enough Disc 2, Track 22 (5:03)

    Additional Songs

    My Shot Disc 1, Track 3 (5:34)*

The Schuyler Sisters Disc 1, Track 5 (3:07)

Guns and Ships Disc 1, Track 18 (2:08)

    Cabinet Battle #2 Disc 2, Track 7 (2:23)

Your Obedient Servant Disc 2, Track 20 (2:31)

The graphic organizer/interactive notebook pages are designed to be spread across 2 pages like a centerfold with

the notes page featuring a downward foldable as well. If 3 sheets of paper per student is too much (and I

definitely understand that) you can certainly have students copy the notes directly into their notebooks it just

tends to be a lot of writing. If you do go that route, I recommend breaking the lesson up into 2 class periods and

integrating more songs, Youtube clips, and class discussions to give them a break from too much writing.

  • This includes a fantastic primary source letter from Alexander Hamilton sent to a Federalist member of the

House of Representatives before they would vote again to decide the next president. In it, Hamilton outlines his

support for Jefferson over Burr. The document then includes 2 different options. The first is a group activity in

which students read the letter than assume the role of Federalists and debate who they would choose. They

should outline their reasons why on the sheet.

The 3rd page of the document is a set of analysis questions based on the document. These could be completed as

an in-class or homework assignment. I provide both depending on how much class time you are able to allot for

the activity. I did not include an answer key for the worksheet simply because all of the questions are open-

ended and many possible answers might suffice.
