Penny Tristram is an artist and writer.

I work in acrylics to produce bright, unusual pieces that play with the mechanics and politics of the human figure. I paint these fantastical images as a response to pressing questions about identity in our digital age. I am especially interested in the tension and contrast between public and private identity.

I f you’re feeling uninspired

and in need of a place to go

the creative hammy housers

are here to put on a show...

FEB MUSIC @ The CanTeenSat1

Tantz - The Leeds-based quintet call it ElectroKlezmer, with whiplash rhythms and heart-catching bass and drums that could almost displace the virtuoso clarinet and violin melodies if they weren’t played so darned well

Sun 2

Ewan McLennan - Rivetting Scots folk singer and guitarist who’s impressed Radio 2, BBC 4 and MOJO magazine with his fine clear voice and dextrous fretwork. There’s a strong political energy underpinning much of his material, rich in the traditions of his homeland

Mon 3

Canteen Jazz Session - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes

Tues 4

Glow Globes - The Glow Globes duo holds your attention with a wry and quirky music and sweet harmony singing in a mix of swing, country, chanson and all kinds of stylish genres

Wed 5

FREIGHT - Martin Jenkins’ modern jazz piano and composition nod firmly towards the great Thelonious Monk while Greg Cordez’s bass and tunes lean in a contemporary Scandinavian direction

Thur 6

Richard O’Brien Sextet - Sometimes even the most disciplined of bass players just has to let it all out, and funky twangster Richard O’Brien is no exception

Fri 7Talisman - They made their name in the 80s conscious reggae scene and the reformed Talisman are still true to those roots but they’ve also moved on and the new tunes have a fresh energy that belies their veteran status

Sat8

Wormfood presents Polaroid 85 - under Neeta Sari’s direction her fabulous electro-acoustic collective bring it to pulsating life. Piano led tunes set skittering drum’n’bass, cello, violin and clarinet loose among the electronics and her own dream-perfect vocals. Cinematic Anglo-Indian dance music for the future

Sun 9

Emily Wright & The Royals - Her top trio of musicians makes a classy setting for Emily’s smoothly louche vocal evocation of swing music of the 30s and 40s.

Mon 10

Twelve Months of Summer Feat. Josie Newton, Callum Martin & The Tixx- Monthly acoustic evenings hosted by the straight-talking singer-songwriter Rosie B with a whole host of talented guests

Tues 11

Mary Spender - a cut above your average singer/songwriter and guitarist. Comparisons with Joni Mitchell rest lightly on the easy jazziness of her voice and the quick, rich lyricism of her songs

Wed12

Magic Lantern - Jamie Doe writes songs that sound deceptively spare and starkly beautiful, but which open up to reveal a warmth, humour and wisdom that belies his age.

Thur13

Ansum & The Vibes - With the supercool Ansum fronting up and a solid reggae backbeat behind the Vibes are, inevitably, cool and classically Caribbean

Fri14

Harleighblu & Typesun (Dj Set) - Only 17 and she’s already part of the Tru Thoughts superhip stable alongside Quantic and the like. The contemporary jazz-blues edge of Harleighblu’s debut album ‘Forget Me Not’ put her on 2013’s ‘must catch’ list. Here’s your chance

Sat15

Regime - Young fivesome making live ‘heavy hip-hop from Bristol Town’ - so that means dub wise flavours from time to time and a general commitment to keeping it nice and bass-y

Sun16

FB Pocket Orchestra - From a time warp down in the New Forest the FB Pocket Orchestra bring a fresh sound that harks back to the hot jazz and swing of the 30s

Mon17

Canteen Jazz Session - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes

Tues18

Sam Green & The Midnight Heist - This ridiculously good lap-steel guitar player rolls out his own contemporary folk songs of freewheeling wisdom

Wed19

Break a Lead - Fundraising night for the UWE Illustration crew featuring three great acts: Rosie Rowland’s gentle poetic melancholy, the psychedelic reggae of Jalandhar and the mysterious enigma that is Forestar

Thur20

The Rosellys - Country-steeped coming together of singer/songwriter Rebecca Rosewall and the brothers Simon & Allan Kelly Contemporary Americana songs in the vein of Alison Krauss with a rich vein of Cajun swing always near to the surface

Fri21

Cut Capers - Hard-driving hip-hop beats, jumping ska and great brass business make the soundtrack for some multi-lingual duelling by MCs Eloy Sinser and Mark Pearce

Sat22

Fofoulah - The sound of Senegal has always been a favourite flavour here at Canteen so this London-based fusion of West African tradition with bass-boosting synths and electro-dub production should have no trouble getting the Saturday party started

Sun23

Denny Ilett - Moscow Drug Club’s jazz guitarist has a rocking blues heart as well as a swinging way with a tune. Whether paying tribute to the great Wes Montgomery or catching the contemporary vibe with Andy Sheppard Denny’s head-turning musicianship makes him a real treat to the ears

Mon24

Leonie Evans Blues Session - Lovely-voiced vocalist from Rae and other bands reveals her own idiosyncratically blues-inspired material

Tues25

Lauren Bradford - Ex-patriot singer from the US whose clear voice and crisply picked acoustic guitar unfold her own poetic songs with soulful honesty and urgency, whether stirring anthems or thoughtful ballads

Wed26

Bucking Mules - If you want to know what Americana is about then you should probably start in the Appalachians - which is where the four members of Bucking Mules hail from. Their acoustic old time music is played on fiddle banjo guitar and bass is straight from a hillbilly fireside and pure as a mountain stream

Thur27

Bristol Afrobeat Project - What it says on the can: they come from Bristol - all ten of ‘em - and they play the kind of pile-driving West African funk that Fela Kuti and his drumming legend Tony Allen pioneered in the 70s

Fri28

Speaking in Tongues - The Canteen don’t do tribute acts as a rule, but this absolutely bang on reconstruction of the many faces of Talking Heads would

surely merit a benign nod from the great Mr Byrne himself. Fabulous music brought to the liveliest of life by Chris Apthomas and friends
