This month features a varie-ty of events in keeping with UAEU’s pursuit of excellence and leadership in terms of innovation. The Media and Communications Depart-ment supports this through widespread media cover-age and disseminates news from the university to the wider community. We have also supported the universi-ty’s drive for innovation and creativity over the past few months.This is part of our vision to become a link between national aspirations and community-based initia-tives. We report of the work and achievements of the university, its faculty and students in order to share this with the community and society as a whole.

His Excellency Abdallah Ghobash,Minister of State in the United Arab Emirates government, stressed that education across the UAE has improved in terms of learning technologies at every level thanks to the support of the national leadership. The development of teaching and learning has been at the forefront of the government’s strategic planning and priorities. This has resulted in an increase in the number of higher education institutions, both government and private, and created competition in terms of attracting students and improving academic targets to meet the need of the nation and society in a variety of disciplines. Such institutions meet the ambitions of students who seek a high quality and advanced higher education that is comparable to other universities worldwide.

Her Excellency Maryam Al Roumi, Minister of Social Affairs, expressed her pride in the accom plishments of UAE women in leadership positions. The have made significant strides in many fields and kept pace with developments in wider society by assuming a degree of responsibility.This speech was part of her visit to the United Arab Emirates University campus in Al Ain. She was returning to the College of Arts (English Department) where she previously graduated. She commented on the development of female education, with the percentage of women in education in the UAE being amongst the highest in the region since the establishment of higher education. She added that “women in the UAE have made great strides thanks in part to the care and concern the country has for education. It is at the forefront of national strategies which contribute to an increase.

Professor Saif Al Qaydi, Dean of College of Humanities and Social Sciences, opened a Heritage Day event organized by the United Arab Emirates University, in the amphitheater of the Grand Hall in the Crescent Building on the Maqam campus. It was aimed at spreading awareness of the importance of national heritage and its foundations.His Excellency Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi, Vice Chancellor of the university, visited the exhibition, ‘Elle Malo Awwal Malo Tali’. This was a continuation of the previous exhibition and part of the college’s overall strategy. During the visit he viewed the contributions of various authorities, institutions and student clubs.

As part of the Educational Research Forum: The UAEU supports research and calls for increased research in education..The College of Education at the United Arab Emirates University recently organized an ‘Educational Research: Opportunities, Priorities and Innovation’ forum. It was held in the presence of Professor Ghaleb Ali Al Hadrami, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, Professor Bernard Oliver, Dean of the College of Education and other faculty and specialists in education and scientific research. Professor Oliver explained that the goal of the forum was to enrich the research experience of faculty and graduate students by introducing them to the various research opportunities available, and to strengthen cooperation between the college and official bodies with similar research interests. Professor Oliver called on the students to benefit from the researchers at the forum and to learn from their experiences and ideas.

The English Literature Department at the United Arab Emirates University organized the ‘First International Conference on Literature for Children and Young Adults: Contemporary Challenges and Future Aspirations’ in the Information Technology building. Dr. Saif Al Qaydi, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, faculty, and specialists from Egypt, Germany, Kenya, England, Taiwan, Kazakhstan and several other countries were in attendance.

The College of Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organized a lecture on ‘Thirsty Cities’ in the Information Technology Building on the Maqam campus. In attendance were Dr. Ahmed Murad, Dean of the College of Sciences, professors and students. This lecture is part of a series organized by the College of Sciences involving specialists in various fields to facilitate research exchange between UAEU and other academic institutions.Professor Chad Staddon, a professor of Geography and Environmental Management from England, presented the lecture and began by asking whether urbanization can solve the problem of water shortages.

The Innovation Support Team at the United Arab Emirates University organized a ‘Sharp Minds and Bright Ideas’ event, in the food-court area of the female campus. Professor Ghaleb Ali Al Hadrami, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, and Professor Faeqa Al Hilal, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administrative Affairs (Secretary-General) were in attendance. The two day event was opened by the Secretary-General and aims to encourage creative ideas in the student body. This included a brainstorming workshop to record innovative ideas as part of the ‘Idea Gist’ program at UAEU.
