All that remains for Hamburger SV as their second UEFA Champions League campaign limps towards a conclusion is to try and gain their first points in Group G. They were assured of finishing in last place after Matchday 4 so the real significance of this game lies in whether PFC CSKA Moskva can overcome recent disappointment and secure the victory which could book them a first-ever qualifying place. • CSKA were handily placed before the last round of fixtures, in possession of a one-point advantage over both Arsenal FC and FC Porto. However, a 2-0 home defeat by Porto promises to be very costly because even a win at the Arena Hamburg might see them left to fight a UEFA Cup campaign if the game between Porto and Arsenal ends in a draw. In that event all three teams would finish with eleven points (and on five points each when results between the three are taken into account) and the goal difference in the matches involved would give Arsenal top spot with Porto second. Valeri Gazzaev's side must look to triumph in Germany and then pray there is a winner at the Estádio do Dragão. • Porto went through to the knockout rounds at CSKA's expense in 2004/05 and on 21 November put themselves in line to repeat the feat after goals in each half from Ricardo Quaresma and captain Lucho González gave them a third successive victory. CSKA, in contrast, suffered defeat for the first time in the section. Late goals • In London, Hamburg slid to their fifth successive defeat though for a time they harboured hopes of a surprise victory as they held the upper hand at Arsenal thanks to Rafael van der Vaart's second UEFA Champions League goal in as many games. Robin van Persie equalised (52) before Emmanuel Eboué and Julio Baptista finally put paid to the resistance of Thomas Doll's side in the final seven minutes. • Hamburg have actually scored more goals than CSKA - four against two - but the Russian champions' meagre scoring tally need not necessarily be an impediment to their hopes of making progress. Teams have qualified before without a rush of goals: Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage both advanced to the next phase with just three goals, the Spanish club going on to reach the semi-finals. Improved form • After losing at home to Arsenal, Hamburg travelled to Moscow on Matchday 2 hoping to show improved form. However, their challenge foundered on Dudu's 59th-minute header which gave CSKA only their second home win in the UEFA Champions League proper. Their previous two campaigns had brought just one win in six home games. • Before that game the teams had never met in UEFA club competition and it was CSKA's first-ever fixture against German opposition. • Hamburg's miserable season continued on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at VfL Bochum 1848. The visitorswere behind within five minutes after Christoph Dabrowski's opener but they were given hope just before half-timewhen Ljuboja equalised. And it was against the run of play when a Zvjezdan Misimović free-kick midway through thesecond half claimed all three points for Bochum. Hamburg's woe was compounded late on when Van der Vaart wassent off.

• The defeat was the first time this century that Hamburg had lost at Bochum. Hamburg are the only team to havebeen involved in all 44 Bundesliga seasons.

• Hamburg are now four points adrift of the safety zone in the Bundesliga, sitting one off the bottom with just elevenpoints from 15 games.

• Juan Pablo Sorín made his first appearance for Hamburg since 4 November at the weekend, after recovering froma torn thigh muscle. The Argentinian was a second-half substitute for Collin Benjamin but ended the match with anew problem to his calf.

• Benjamin joins a crowded treatment room alongside Mario Fillinger (knee), René Klingbeil (ankle),Vincent Kompany (achilles), Guy Demel (thigh), De Jong (knee) and Wicky (calf).

• De Jong's injury in Hamburg's 4-1 defeat at Porto on 17 October has proved worse than initially thought. The originaldiagnosis was that the Dutch midfielder would be on the sidelines for up to four weeks. He has not played since, though, and has travelled to Amsterdam for further examinations.

• Despite increased pressure on Doll following the loss, the club's sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said: "It'sa difficult situation, we played very badly. But we still believe in Thomas Doll and will try to turn things around togetherwith him."

• Excluding the pre-season German League Cup win against Hertha BSC Berlin, Hamburg's only competitive victorythis season was the 2-1 success at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 22 October. Discounting the League Cup, their run isone win in 25 competitive games.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders FC Barcelona are not having an easy ride this time around. Failure to beat Werder Bremen would make themthe first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (Thisrecord, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

Manchester United FC could become the first team to win their first three games in a group stage and still not progressif they fail to pick up at least a point against SL Benfica.

Alessandro Costacurta will extend the UEFA Champions League oldest player record he set on Matchday 5 to 40years and 226 days if he features against LOSC Lille Métropole. Against AEK Athens FC on Matchday 5, the veterandefender was 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper DanyVerlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003. Laurent Blanc is currently theoldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester UnitedFC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

For those already-qualified clubs considering giving a chance to young players, Celestine Babayaro is the youngestplayer to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSCAnderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

PFC Levski Sofia have double incentive for wanting to do well at Chelsea FC. They are aiming to avoid joining 1. FCKošice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. TheSlovakian side did just that in their maiden campaign in 1997/98, and have not returned to the competition since. Onlyfive other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK RapidWien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second groupstage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski have also shipped 15 goals in their first five outings this term, just four short of the record number let in duringa group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Spartak have not won in their last 22 games in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK AthensFC on Matchday 3 this season. AEK ended their run of 21 games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against LOSCLille Métropole on Matchday 4.

Spartak extended their sequence without a win to 22 games with the 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern München onMatchday 5. Those 22 games are made up of 17 defeats and five draws. The last time Spartak won was 22 November2000 with a 4-1 second group stage victory at home against Arsenal FC. Interestingly, Spartak’s last away win wasat Sporting Clube de Portugal, their Matchday 6 opponents, when they won 3-0 in Lisbon on 17 October 2000. Theyhave not won in their last 12 away games in Europe’s premier club competition.

For all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals in the first five games. They can take comfort fromthe achievement of Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advancedto the next phase with just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they madeit all the way to the semi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

AEK and AS Roma can still go through with seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introducedin 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FCin 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, afeat achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

A world-class midfielder in his prime, Thomas Doll is a young coach keen to integrate the latest findings in sportsscience into management. Raised in the former East Germany, Doll played his first games for his local club BSG LokMalchin, before signing for first FC Hansa Rostock and then Berliner FC Dynamo. Following German reunification,he joined Hamburger SV for the first time in 1990.

An outstanding first season led to Italians giants S.S. Lazio making Hamburg an offer they could not refuse - theestimated €8.5m fee helped save the Bundesliga side from bankruptcy - and Doll spent the next three seasons inSerie A. An injury-plagued spell at Eintracht Frankfurt followed before Doll found his way back to Hamburg via atwo-season stint at AS Bari. He hung up his boots after that second spell with Hamburg in 2001 having made 18appearances for Germany, and was part of the team that lost to Denmark in the final of EURO '92.

Doll was not idle for long, having already started coaching the Hamburg Under-19 side during his later years at theclub when injuries began to take hold. Promoted to become reserve-team coach in 2002, he took command of thesenior side following Klaus Toppmöller's departure on 18 October 2004. He lifted Hamburg off the foot of the table, and went on to lead them to UEFA Intertoto Cup triumph in 2005 and a place in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup. In the lattercampaign Doll guided Hamburg to a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga, opening the door to the UEFA ChampionsLeague.

Referee

UEFAUCLDoBNat.Name251019.09.1962ITAStefano Farina

Stefano Farina followed in the footsteps of compatriots Sergio Gonella, Luigi Agnolin and Piero Ceccarini when hewas appointed to control one of European football's flagship matches - the 2006 UEFA Super Cup.

Born on 19 September 1962, Farina is an insurance agent based in Rome who lists ancient Roman history amonghis hobbies and also doubles up as tennis instructor. He has been refereeing since 1979, made his top-flight debutin 1995 (a game between US Foggia and AC Reggiana) and earned his FIFA badge in 2001. He took charge of hisfirst UEFA Champions League qualifying fixture that same summer and by September 2003 was refereeing gamesin the competition proper as well UEFA Cup ties and UEFA European Championship qualifiers.

Farina topped up his air miles in summer 2004 when overseeing two FIFA World Cup qualifiers; Tahiti against Fijiand New Zealand versus Vanuatu. A regular in the UEFA Champions League for the last two seasons, three of hisfour matches last term involved English clubs. Farina has also proved adept at controlling two of European football'smost passionate derbies in Rome and Milan, so it was no surprise to see him appointed for the all-Spanish SuperCup in which Sevilla FC turned on the style to defeat FC Barcelona 3-0 in Monaco.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
