Cost of light
Cost of light is very important whenreplacing a lamp. To upgrade a lamp from
standard to energy saving, for example cangive a significant saving over the lifetime ofthe lamp.
Choosing the right lamp
To help you to achieve the mosteffective spread and level of illumination for yourparticular application, we include a rangeoverview in this catalogue. This overview showsthe power, beam angle, cap, voltage and life.

Tungsten Halogen Principle
The tungsten filament is enclosed in a gas filledquartz bulb, together with a controlled quantity ofhalogen. At the operating temperature sometungsten vapourizes and migrates to the coolerareas of the bulb wall where before it can bedeposited, it combines with the halogen to form atungsten halide. This circulates until it comesnear the filament where the halide dissociates anddeposits the tungsten back on the filament.This cycle continues throughout the operating lifeof the lamp.
As the bulb wall remains clean the bulb size canbe reduced considerably by the use of quartz
which can withstand the high wall temperatures.The small bulb and strong materials withstandmuch higher working pressures, this reduces fila-ment evaporation, thus offering increased perfor-mance either as more light or longer life.
Light, Life & Voltage
For any particular lamp, the light output andlife depend upon the voltage at which a lamp isoperated. For instance, as approximations, thelight output varies as the 3.6th power of the
voltage and the life varies inversely as the 12thpower of the voltage. The chart and tablesbelow illustrate the effects of overvoltage orundervoltage applied to lamp on its current,life and light output. The values given (exceptfor long life lamps) are reasonably valid
between 95% and 110% rated volts. Beyondthis range the indicated characteristics may notbe realised because of the increasing influenceof factors which cannot be incorporated intothe chart. The chart applies only to D. C. orsine-wave A. C. current. The data may differparticularly for lamp operation on halfwaverectified voltage, semiconductor dimmingdevices of constant operation.

Radiation
Potentially harmful high energy UV- C and UV- Bradiation emitted by the filament are absorbed bythe wall of the capsule which is produced withspecially developed UV Control quartz. The useof UV control quartz together with an opticallyneutral front cover glass allows the lamp to fullycomply with the latest stringent requirements ofIEC60357.
IEC Standards
GE tungsten halogen lamps comply with the fol-lowing international standards where applicable: IEC 60357 Tungsten Halogen Lamps, IEC 60061 Lamp Caps & Holders.
ConstantColorTM Coating
The application of GE Thin Film Technologyis designed to maintain consistent colourthroughout life.The durable tantala and silica oxides can with-stand temperatures of 500 C without degra-dation over a rated life of 5000 hours on 20,and 35W lamps, 6000 hours on 50W lampsand 4000 hours on 71W lamps. This coating
will not degrade over life, a high level oflumen maintenance is achieved throughout
lamp life. Normal dichroic coatings can loseas much as 50% of lumen maintenance overlife as non-durable coatings degrade. TheConstantColorTM coating ensures that lightcolouration is the same from lamp to lamp. Asthe coating is applied to the inside and theoutside of the reflector, a reduced quantity oflight is wasted out the back of the lamp. Thelight that does escape through the reflector isa consistent hue which will not vary from lampto lamp through life ensuring replacements
do not appear different from existing lamps.The ConstantColorTM interference film stillallows 66% of the infra-red heat to passthrough the back of the reflector to ensure acool beam is achieved while reflecting forwardalmost 100% of the visible light.

Precise
Standard MR16& MR16 Start
Precise Standard MR16 and MR16Start lamps are low voltage tungstenhalogen reflector- mounted lamps popu-lar for downlighting and accent lightingapplications. The Cover Glass (closed)
versions incorporate an integral clearlens to ensure that both bulb and reflec-tor are protected from dust and dirt dur-ing installation and operation. The coverglass effectively eliminates UV- C radia-tion and greatly reduces UV- B radiation.The closed versions use the same reflec-tors as the open versions and hencehave the same dimensions, allowing usersto interchange lamps at will.

Customer talking

The major fabric retailers, Rosebys, has been
giving its stores a fresh look with GE Lightinglamps. A combination of GEs Polylux XLTM
and Precise ConstantColorTM lamps have beeninstalled in order to create a more naturalatmosphere.
With the help of Orchard Electrical, who car-ried out the design and installation of the GElamps, Rosebys now has a high quality and costeffective lighting system.
The main reason for selecting these GElamps was their excellent colour rendering,explained Ray Crookes, from OrchardElectrical. We did not want a customer to buyan item they thought was brown only to find
when they took it outside that it was red.Reliability and long life were also importantand by working with GE Lighting we have alsobeen able to offer Rosebys cost savings interms of revisits and maintenance.
Although it measures just 12 feet by 16 feet,one room at the Cakebread Cellars Winery is
of particular importance. Because it is here vis-itors to the family-owned vintner can examine,taste and enjoy Cakebread wine.
"The owners, Jack and Dolores Cakebread,wanted the illumination in the Tasting Roomto be respectful of the architectural form andrural setting of the winery," said Ivan Hawtof,principal Hawtof Associates, Lighting
Consultants. "Both they and I wanted to createan environment where the visitor's five senses
were in balance."

Can halogen lamps be dimmed
in the same way that GLS lamps
are dimmed?
Yes, halogen lamps can be dimmed in a way similar to GLS lamp
dimming. However, if the halogen lamp is operating at substantially belowrated voltage the lamp may go black. If the bulb wall of the halogen lamp
running at under voltage does not exceed a certain temperature chemical
reactions cannot prevent the deposition of tungsten on the bulb wall.
Therefore it is important to operate the halogen lamp without
dimming from time to time.

Is there a distance to be
considered in between the lamp
and the lit object?
Its cca. 50- 100 cm but it also depends on the wattage of the lamp and
the actual object how heat sensitive it is.
Why has the halogen bulb gonedark?
a) The lamp is defective;
b) Lamp is overheated or overcooled;
c) Lamp surface was not clean when installed;
d) Has been dimmed for a prolonged time
