7 Halos simplicity and versatility originate with TruLink technology, Starkeys new Bluetooth,
2.4 GHz wireless platform that provides seamless iPhone, iPad and iPod touch connectivity and
wireless programming. What do you need to know about this innovative new wireless platform?
First a refresher on Bluetooth technology: Bluetooth technology is a short-range communications
technology that is simple, secure and everywhere!
It communicates on a
frequency of 2.4 GHz (between
2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz to be
exact). It is found in many
devices, from mobile phones
and computers to medical
devices and home entertainment
products. It is intended to
replace the cables connecting
devices, while maintaining high
levels of security.
Bluetooth technology relies upon radio waves to send information wirelessly, however it
transmits those waves over a shorter distance. It is intended to send information within an
individuals Personal Area
Network or PAN (aka personal
space). Bluetooth technology is
designed to work in any
environment though superior
range and performance is
observed when using Bluetooth
indoors. This is because
Bluetooth relies upon reflections
from the walls, floor etc. to
enhance the signal.
Bluetooth technology
features adaptive frequency agility (AFA) which is designed to reduce interference between
wireless technologies that share the 2.4 GHz spectrum. AFA works within the spectrum to take
advantage of the available frequency. This is done by the technology detecting other devices in
STARKEY CONFIDENTIAL:

8detecting other devices in the spectrum and avoiding the frequencies they are using. This
adaptive hopping gives a high degree of interference immunity and also allows for more efficient
transmission within the spectrum. For users of Bluetooth technology, this hopping provides
greater performance even when other technologies are being used along with Bluetooth
technology.
A key component to TruLinks robustness and easy connectivity is Bluetooth 4.0. Using Bluetooth 4.0, Halo hearing aids provide a power-efficient, high-quality digital audio experience.
Your patients enjoy audio streams from the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with outstanding sound
quality for phone calls, music, FaceTime calls and other activities.

DEVICES DETECTEDThe Halo hearing aids can be programmed with both wireless and non-wireless programmers.*Note that the term non-wireless will replace the use of the term wired in reference to both programmers and hearing aids in product communications going forward.
Wireless programming requires the TruLink
Programmer. The
TruLink Programmer
connects to the
computer via a USB
plug-in. Fresh
batteries are
necessary for a
programming
session.
Non-wireless programming requires flex
strips and a SpeedPort, HiPRO box or
NoahLink.
The programming configuration is the same as Xino Wireless.
NOTE: Once the Halo hearing aids display in the
Devices Detected screen, programming within
Inspire is the same as other Starkey wireless
devices.
Important Programming Requirements If Halo hearing aids are paired to an iOS
device:
Turn Off Bluetooth on the iOS device. The hearing aids cannot be connected to more
than one device. If actively connected to
the iPhone they wont be seen. The
Devices Detected screen will populate however No Hearing Aids Detected will
appear.
Good to Know All technology tiers of Halo follow First
Read Rules in Inspire which means the product does not appear in Simulate
Products until a hearing aid of EACH
technology tier has been read by the fitting
computer.

HALO PROGRAMMINGThe new wireless product, Halo, is available
in 3 technology levels: i110, i90 and i70. The
professional can simulate a Halo fitting by
selecting the button on the Simulate Products screen once they have been read.
TRULINK PROGRAMMERHalo can be programmed with either a
non-wireless programmer (Speedport, NOAHLink,
HiPRO) or with the TruLink wireless programmer.
The new TruLink wireless programmer is a
dedicated programmer that works with products
using 2.4 GHz. This programmer is in addition to
the SurfLink programmer and does not replace
that programmer. Products using 900 MHz will still
use the SurfLink wireless programmer.
STARKEY WIRELESS PROGRAMMERS: SurfLink 900 MHz PROGRAMMER (LEFT) TruLink 2.4 GHz PROGRAMMER (RIGHT)
TruLink CRADLE
The TruLink programmer is a USB device
and resides in a cradle with a built-in USB cable.
The cable for the TruLink wireless programmer is
plugged directly into a USB port on the fitting

The new TruLink programmer will be identified in Inspire 2014.2 as a unique
programmer. A new graphic will appear in the bottom right corner to indicate that
the TruLink programmer has been detected. Device drivers for the new programmer
are included in the Inspire 2014.2 software.
The Devices Detected window will designate any hearing aids that are capable of being programmed by the TruLink programmer. The term TRULINK will be displayed to the right of the
hearing aid information. This new wireless programmer behaves like the SurfLink programmer. Detection
of hearing devices in the environment
within range and with batteries will be
shown in the list. Patient names, product
detail (technology, matrix, serial number
and firmware version) as well as battery
life will also be displayed in the window.
The Search for Programmers window will also display information about the TruLink programmer under Wireless Programmers. As with any of our other programmers, Inspire allows for multiple
programmers to be connected to the same computer simultaneously.

Within the iOS device, the Apple proprietary controls are referred to as Native Controls. They
allow the patient to make a number of adjustments to their Halo hearing aids yet are separate from
adjustments made in the TruLink Hearing Control App.
While the Native Controls can quickly adjust basic settings of the Halo hearing aids, Starkey
recommends the use of the TruLink Hearing Control App for the patient to have optimal performance
with their Halo aids. It is important for you to be familiar with the Native Controls to respond to
customer questions.
Apples Native Controls are accessed by tapping the Settings
icon>General>Accessibility>Hearing Aids. Tap the !

Car Memory
Halo hearing aids offer patients a unique solution to meet a patients needs
when traveling in a car. With a Car Memory implemented and Automatic Car Memory enabled, Halo hearing aids will automatically change into the Car Memory to reduce the annoying sounds of driving and enhance the driving
experience whenever the iOS device is in motion and exceeding 10 mph.
Memory selection will automatically revert back to the previous memory in use once the iOS
device is traveling below 10 mph for at least 2 minutes.
If the patient manually selects another memory after the Halo hearing aids have automatically
switched into the Car Memory, the Automatic Car Memory feature will turn off. A prompt will
appear alerting the patient to this, and Automatic Car Memory will need to be re-enabled under
Apps Settings if so desired. Geo-tagged memories with Auto Change enabled take precedence over the Car Memory. Geo-
tagging will be discussed in Section 3: SoundSpace.
If no Car memory has been programmed, no memory change will occur despite the feature being engaged.

The TruLink Hearing Control Remote screen allows the patient to adjust volume in each hearing aid as well as change memories. Both are
adjusted via visual indicators. To adjust the volume of Halo hearing aids
independently, slide the small circle along the line, right to increase
volume and left to decrease. To adjust the volume of Halo hearing aids
simultaneously, slide your finger along the slide pad in the center of the
screen.
Reserve Gain programmed within Inspire will determine
where the TruLink VC Slider defaults:
The default Reserve Gain setting will be 12 dB. The other options reduce or essentially eliminate (reserve
gain of 0) the patients ability to turn the VC up. The
TruLink Remote screen will display only the slider
position. It does not state VC % as the Native Controls
do.
To mute the Halo hearing aids, tap the icon. The icon will turn solid red indicating you have
muted the Halo hearing aids . To unmute, tap the mute icon again and the volume will return to the
last known setting.

4 82%
0 94%
To change memories simply tap the shade at the top of the screen and
your available memories will populate. The shade is the tab that will display
all memory options when tapped or pulled downward.
To change a memory, tap the memory name
and a blue check will appear next to the
memory indicating you have made the change.
To access advanced memory features tap the
icon to the right of the memory name and
you will be directed to the Memory Options screen where the memory can be further
personalized with Auto Change and a photo.
Good To Know When the Halo hearing aids are muted, if the last known volume
setting is not known (an aid was disconnected and then reconnected), the volume will default to
56%. This will depend upon how reserve gain is set.
When you first connect Halo hearing aids to an iOS device, the Inspire programmed memories
will populate along with a memory labeled TruLink. TruLink is a spaceholder until personalized memories have been created.
If more than one memory with the same name has been created in Inspire, the memories will be
displayed in the TruLink Hearing Control App as Normal, Normal 2, Normal 3 for example.
The same logic applies to duplication of any Inspire memory.
42
The TruLink Hearing Control App SoundSpace screen turns an iOS
device into a personal settings adjustment tool. It provides patients with
the ability to adjust sound quality and create personalized, custom
memories to better suit unique listening environments. Before
SoundSpace may be used, the TruLink Hearing Control App must be
downloaded from the Apple App store and the Halo hearing aids must be
professionally programmed via Inspire and paired with an iOS device.
The SoundSpace screen is accessed from the lower toolbar of the
Remote (Launch) screen of the TruLink Hearing Control App. It should be
used in the environment for which a custom memory is desired. The
patient launches SoundSpace after selecting the most helpful memory
from those currently available to serve as the adjustment baseline. All
noise control and directional settings will be carried over from this parent
memory.
After tapping on the Start button, the patient pushes down on the blue circle and moves their
finger around the SoundSpace screen.
Temporary, real-time changes to the sound
quality of the hearing aids is heard. Once a
desired sound quality is found, the patient
releases their finger and the memory may be
saved. This feature remains unique to Starkey
and is the very best way to customize the
amplification experience.
USING SOUNDSPACE
SECTION 3
43
Good To Know The maximum number of TruLink custom memories is determined by the number of Inspire
memories programmed by the hearing healthcare professional. A combined total of 20 memories
are possible.
SoundSpace cannot be used to permanently adjust an Inspire memory.
If an Inspire memory is used for creating a TruLink custom memory, the patient will be required to
Save the settings as a new memory. If a TruLink custom memory is used to create a new custom memory, the patient will receive a
prompt confirming the use of the new settings. They may Replace the current custom memory, create a New memory or Cancel the changes.
TruLink Hearing Control custom memories will not be displayed in Inspire.
Only one memory per tagged geographical location (geo-tag) is possible.
The Halo hearing aids will switch to Inspire Memory 1 when leaving a geo-tagged location.
SoundSpace adjustment capabilities mirror those available with SoundPoint and include gain
changes spanning +/- 8 dB and minor compression adjustments.
Personalizing Memories
Auto ChangeAuto Change will default off in Inspire memories and ON in TruLink
custom memories, but it may be enabled or disabled on a per memory
basis. To enable Auto Change in an Inspire memory, tap on the arrow icon
adjacent to the memory name accessed from the TruLink Remote screen.
Press the blue circle marking the patients location until a red pushpin
populates on the screen. When this happens, Auto Change will also populate in the ON position.
To disable Auto Change in a TruLink custom memory, tap on the arrow
icon adjacent to the memory name. This is accessed from the TruLink Remote
screen. Tap on the Auto Change button in the bottom right corner of the screen to turn it OFF.
44!
Further enabling or disabling of the feature for either type of memory is
accomplished by tapping the Auto Change button. Blue indicates on, and grey
indicates off. Prompts will alert the patient to the status of the feature whenever
changes are made.
The geo-tag location may be adjusted for greater accuracy (i.e. individual
buildings on a campus) by pressing down on the location marker pushpin
located on the map and dragging it to a new location. The map can also be
pinched (to shrink) or pulled (to enlarge) for greater accuracy. Tapping the Arrow
Icon will return the map to the users physical location, and tapping on the
Pushpin Icon will center the map at the selected pushpin location. All map
features are consistent with Apple Maps.
Good To Know Auto change may be enabled or disabled in any memory as needed.
When disabled, a prompt will explain that this memory will not be automatically activated upon
return visits to this location. The auto change icon will be grey.
When enabled, a prompt will explain that this memory will automatically be activated upon return
visits to this location. The auto change icon will be blue.
The Halo hearing aids will switch to Memory 1 when leaving a geo-tagged location.
Only one memory per tagged geographical location (geo-tag) is possible.
To clear a geo-tag, remove the red pushpin by tapping on the red circle adjacent to the memory
name/address label on the map screen.
Adding a Photo
Add a Photo to a memory for further personalization. Tap on the Camera/Postcard icon found on
the map screen, and select Take Photo or Choose from Library and follow the prompts.
45
Streaming AudioHalo Hearing Aids can interact with an iOS device to stream media
from any audio source. Patients can enjoy true hands-free communication
and streaming anywhere, anytime with nothing more than their iOS device.
Streaming functionality is accessed and adjusted from the iOS device itself.
Streaming uses the frequency response of the memory the hearing
aids are in when streaming is initiated. To optimize the signal, choose a
memory with improved sound quality for streamed input, for example the
Music or Streaming memory programmed within Inspire.
Good To Know Streaming distance between Halo hearing aids and an iOS device is approximately 10 meters or
30 feet indoors (depending on signal strength) and will be reduced outdoors.
If a patient has been fit monaurally, it is recommended that Mono Audio be engaged on the iOS
device so the streamed signal is not split into a stereo mode appropriate for a binaural fitting.
This is accessed by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing Aids. The volume buttons on the side of the iOS device itself adjust volume for the streamed input not
the hearing aid volume.
If more gain for a streamed signal is desired than what can be provided by the TruLink Hearing
Control App (SoundSpace) and/or the iOS device volume adjustment options, create a new
Inspire memory for streaming that has more gain. Consider using the Streaming memory as a
baseline for this. If an incoming call is received while streaming, the streamed audio or music is
paused while the call is taken. Once the call has been disconnected, the streamed audio music
will resume at the point at which it stopped to handle the phone call.
STREAMING MEDIA FUNCTIONALITY
SECTION 4
46
If the iPhone is carried on the body, response is optimized with the back of the iPhone facing away
from the body. If the iPhone is placed in a pocket, a higher pocket is recommended to provide
closer proximity to both ears for binaural streaming.
The TruLink Hearing Control App can be used to mute the Halo hearing aid microphones and
enhance the streamed signal in the presence of background noise. To access this feature in the
app, enable Automatically Mute When Streaming Audio in Device Settings > App Settings. Apples iOS 7 features AirPlay which can be used to stream audio
and video to connected devices, including Halo hearing aids via
Bluetooth. This includes audio/video from AirPlay enabled apps like iTunes, Pandora and Netflix. Airplay is accessed from the Control Center by swiping upward on the Home screen and selecting the audio source for streaming.
If an audio stream has been initiated but no sound is heard in the
Halo hearing aids, swipe upward from the bottom of the iOS device
display to access AirPlay in the Control Center. If the Halo hearing
aids are not checked as the audio source, tap to select them.
Important information for Streaming with an iPhone 4s Halo and the TruLink Hearing Control App are compatible with the iPhone 4s for all functions;
however, streaming will be to one ear, not stereo as with all of the other iPhone models.
To enhance the streaming capability with an iPhone 4s, the iPhone setting should be set to mono
audio. To set mono audio tap: Settings>General>Accessibility>Hearing Aids>Mono Audio. Slide right to enable. This will send both the left and right signals to the chosen ear.
The Halo wearer can designate which ear will receive the streamed signal from the Native
Controls screen by enabling the slider to stream to the right or left hearing aid.
Airplay Feature in the Control Center
47
Halo Hearing Aids enable hands-free phone
conversation with an iPhone. Outgoing calls can
be easily made from the Phone icon on the
iPhone itself by choosing a number from the
resources available such as Contacts, Favorites
and even FaceTime! Incoming calls can be
accepted and controlled from the iPhone as well.
Halo Hearing Aids make it easy to accept
an incoming phone call! The iPhone will indicate
the arrival of an incoming call. Once the call is
accepted, the Call Options box will be displayed.
Other iPhone options such as Mute may be
selected from the Call Options box during the
call.
Good To Know Phone calls will take precedence over all
streaming sessions in the same iOS device.
If an incoming call is received while
streaming audio, the streamed audio is
paused while the call is taken. Once the
call has been disconnected, the audio will
resume at the point at which it stopped to
handle the phone call.
Memories may be changed during the
course of a phone call by switching to the
TruLink Hearing Control or Native Controls
and selecting the desired memory option.

The TruLink Hearing Control App Remote Microphone screen allows
the iOS device to be used as an assistive device for delivering audio directly
to Halo hearing aids. The Remote Microphone can also be used by the
patient to Record, Playback and e-mail audio as it happens. They can listen
to it later in a more conducive setting or send it via e-mail to their hearing
professional to help troubleshoot and advise the patient. The Remote
Microphone screen is accessed from the lower toolbar of the TruLink
Hearing Control App.
To initiate the Remote Microphone: Tap the Power button to
begin the audio stream from the iOS device. A waveform displays the
current input to the iOS device microphones. Tap the Power button again to turn the microphone
off.
Good To Know The TruLink Hearing Control App Microphone feature can only be used if microphones are
enabled on the iOS device. The patient will receive a prompt re: microphone access the first time
they use the TruLink Hearing Control App and turn on the Microphone feature. If there is a need
to ensure that microphone use is enabled, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone > TruLink on the iOS device.
To optimize the remote microphone performance, the iOS device should be positioned so the
signal/ person is looking at the device screen.
Microphone pickup is best with the iOS device microphone pointed toward the audio source.
Depending on the iOS device, there may be one or more microphones on the bottom and/ or top
of the device.
REMOTE MICROPHONE FUNCTIONALITY
SECTION 6
49
To minimize background noise and enhance the desired signal, the iOS
device should be placed as close to the sound source as possible.
If the iOS device is already streaming audio and the remote microphone
is turned on, the current streamed audio will stop streaming while the
remote microphone is on. The streamed audio will not resume until it is
re-selected and Play is tapped.
If the Remote Microphone is ON and a screen or app change is made, a
red TruLink notification will flash at the top of the Apple screen
indicating the Remote Microphone is still on. Tapping the red banner
will return the patient to the TruLink Microphone screen.
50
The TruLink Hearing Control App has a built in Demo Mode. The Demo Mode is a tool for the professional, NOT the patient and is designed for use as a demonstration of the TruLink Hearing Control features, in the absence of Halo hearing aids. It is NOT for demonstrating Halo hearing aids. This feature will be helpful for staff and clinicians alike in that you do not need Halo devices in order to
navigate through the app. The Demo Mode can be activated by tapping the icon >App Settings> Demo Mode. The TruLink Hearing Control App must be shut down and re-launched to activate the Demo Mode. The following pop-up message will be displayed reminding you to close the app:
Within Demo Mode you can demonstrate how you can increase/decrease the volume of Halo hearing aids independently or simultaneously
as you would on the regular remote. You can also demonstrate how to mute
and unmute the Halo hearing aids, as well as view and change memories as
you would in the app with live Halo hearing aids connected. Tapping on the
advanced memory icon will pull up a geo-tag screen showing via GPS the
current location of the iOS device. This screen is inactive to save or delete
the geo-tag and you must tap Cancel to return to the main remote screen.
Within the SoundSpace tab you will be able to view the SoundSpace
board, move around it and save a new memory based on your SoundSpace
changes. The Microphone tab will allow you to turn on and off the
microphone as well as record and play back a saved recording.

SECTION 7
51
Halo and Airplane Use: Airplane travel still requires that electronic equipment either be switched into Airplane Mode or powered down completely during flight. Airlines allowing the use of
electronic devices and Bluetooth technology will not interrupt the ability of the iOS device to be
used with the Halo hearing aids. After switching the iOS device into Airplane mode via the
Settings screen or the Control Center, re-enable Bluetooth function independently from the
Settings screen.
If electronic devices are not allowed to be powered on, there will be no control over the Halo
hearing aid volume or memory as those controls are dictated by the iOS device. Prior to turning
off the iOS device, ensure the hearing aids are set to the desired memory and volume level for the
flight environment. A memory designated for noisy environments may be beneficial.
Good To Know While Airplane Mode is enabled: Halo hearing aids may be returned to Use Gain and the Normal
memory at any time by opening and closing the battery door.
