Looking for tips on how to plan a Halloween party? Create a Halloween party planning checklist to ensure your Halloween celebrations have all of the necessities! Once you’ve planned your October fun with family and friends, review the checklist to make sure you’ve covered all the Halloween party basics.

Here are the essential Halloween party checklist items to help you get started with your planning:

Date Pick the perfect date for your Halloween party. Check with friends and family before you finalize the details!

Guests and Atmosphere Make a list of guests for your Halloween party. Plan a sophisticated Halloween party for adults or organize a family

fun night for the kids. Make the party complete with Halloween costume contests and lots of candy. Hire a local band or DJ to play music and entertain guests throughout the party.

Invitations Plan a specific party theme or a classic Halloween party. Browse the selection of Halloween digital invitations on Punchbowl for the perfect design to complement your theme. Choose invitations

with ghosts for a spooky haunted house themed party. Select invitations with pumpkins for a kids themed party.

Food and Drink Serve delicious food and drinks to your Halloween party guests. Plan simple appetizers, drinks, and, of course, candy. Decide what drinks to serve based on the guests. Mix cocktails and punch for adult themed Halloween parties. Serve lemonade, juice, and other non-alcoholic beverages for a kids party. Label the drinks with creative Halloween names. Make a red punch and name it “Vampire Blood.” Make green jello and call it “Monster Slime.” Create a “Worms in Mud” dessert for the kids with chocolate pudding, crushed oreo cookie

pieces, and gummy worms. Stockpile a variety of candy. Include various options such as chocolate, gummy candy, and sugary candy.

Decorations Choose spectacular decorations to accent your Halloween party theme. Decide whether you will create the Halloween party decorations yourself or purchase them from your local party store. Choose a spooky haunted house theme for the party. Add decorations such as ghosts, mummies in bandages, and gravestones to your checklist for planning a Halloween party. Rent a fog machine from your local party store to add to the haunted house effect. Create a spider’s lair with cotton cobwebs and pipe cleaner spiders. Time will be limited on the day of the party due to food and drink preparation and socializing so make sure you decorate a day or two in advance.

Follow these Halloween party planning guidelines and you’ll be well on your way to a great Halloween celebration. Remember to always plan ahead!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPSor any path where visitors may pass close by. They should never be left unattended. At Home:• Remove tripping hazards to keep your home safe for visiting trick-or-treaters. Keep the porch and front yard clear of anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes, and lawn decorations.• Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.• Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and steps.• Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.• Although most animals are friendly, some can be dangerous; take precautions to prevent animal bites. • More than any other age group, children between the ages of 5 and 9 are the victims of animal bites―about 5% of all children this age are bitten by an animal every year. Children ages 9 to 14 are next in line as the most frequent victims of animal bites. As a parent, you have ultimate responsibility for your child’s safety around any animal―including your own pets, neighborhood pets, and wild animals.

Costumes:• Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.• Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement, or contact with flame. • Look for “flame resistant” on the costume labels. Wigs and accessories should also clearly indicate this. • Consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives to masks. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of your child’s skin to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises or allergic reactions on the big day. Toxic ingredients have been found in cosmetics marketed to teens and tweens.• Avoid any sharp or long swords, canes, or sticks as a costume accessory. Your child can easily be hurt by these accessories if he or she stumbles or trips.• Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from

an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.Pumpkins:• Never allow small children to carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. For the best control while carving, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (AAHS) recommends adults use a small pumpkin saw (sold with other Halloween goods) in small strokes, directing the blade away from themself and others. The AAHS advises against using larger blades, which can become lodged in the pumpkin and cause injuries when pulled out. • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.• Do not place candlelit pumpkins on a porch

create Perfect PumPkinsFor those who want a permanently ghoulish jack-o-lantern, it’s best to purchase a plastic or ceramic variety instead.

carVinG tiPs

• Draw your design on the pumpkin with a water-based marker beforehand. Mistakes are erased easily with a damp sponge.• Cut the top and any large areas with a sharp, straight-edged knife. A dull blade is not a safer alternative.• Serrated metal saws, now widely available in carving kits, are a safer alternative to knives and allow younger children to get in on the action.• Carve away from yourself; kids should carve only under adult supervision.• Never hold the knife in a stabbing position.• When carving, keep a portion of the knife blade in the pumpkin and use slow, steady saw strokes.• Cut the lid at an angle so the outside

diameter is larger than the inside. This prevents the top from falling into the pumpkin when it shrinks.• Scoop out seeds and stringy flesh with a large spoon or ice cream scooper.• Carve the facial features closest to the center first and work outward. Cut out the larger features in sections.• Use an X-Acto knife for details and the tip of a potato peeler to make small circles and curves.• Remove carved portions by gently pushing them into or out of the pumpkin.• Reattach a section that is accidentally removed by using a toothpick to pin it back in place.• Make design holes large enough to provide adequate ventilation for the candle.• Flatten a spot in the base of the pumpkin for the candle but avoid digging too deep because the pumpkin becomes prone to rot.• Make sure the flame is not too close to the top of the pumpkin.

Preservation tipsJack-o-lanterns are a staple of Halloween decorations. Making one last throughout the season is a trick of the trade even some veteran carvers struggle with.People young and old head to pumpkin patches to pick out the ideal pumpkins. Some prefer perfectly round ones, while others like tall, oblong ones. Whatever the decision, the majority of these pumpkins will be brought home and turned into jack-o-lanterns, or pumpkins carved with a design. The key to having a jack-o-lantern ready and prime for Halloween haunting is carving it at the right time. Carved pumpkins will not last forever, so timing it right is key. In general, carved pumpkins will last for about a week if kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. A pumpkin left in midday sun and heat will likely rot or mold much more quickly. For those planning on carving pumpkins for Halloween, it’s best to

do so a day or two before the big day. This way the design will be crisp and fresh. There also are ways to increase the jack-o-lantern’s longevity. Some of the best methods involve inhibiting mold growth and dehydration of the pumpkin. One trick is to submerge the cut pumpkin in a bucket of water for a few minutes after carving to moisten the flesh. Others say that spreading petroleum jelly on the inside of the carved pumpkin will help. Commercial chemical products that reduce the decay of the pumpkin may be effective as well. One can also try using a bleach-and-water solution to keep mold from growing. Those who will simply allow nature to take its course should keep the pumpkin as cool as possible and remove as much of the flesh from the inside when carving. However, because no method is foolproof, the jack-o-lantern will most likely not make it more than a week, unless the goal is to discover new strains of mold growth.

tricks for treats6 tricks for storing Halloween treats

Halloween is a favorite day for many children – and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy.

Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn, and taffy to manage.

Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve

treats long after Halloween has come and gone.

1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as long as some other candy ingredients. Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing.

2. Keep an eye on chocolate. Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. HersheyÕs does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture.

3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original, unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the

candies, the better.

4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer.

5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers.

6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

FUN FACTSDig into these pumpkin facts

Pumpkins are a common sight come around Halloween. This fruit of the fall is often used in decorating the interior and exterior of homes, but can be an integral component of cooking and baking as well.Little thought is given to pumpkins and their makeup. But pumpkin afficionados who want to know more about these delicious gourds can dig into the following facts.Pumpkins are a member of the squash family that grow on long vines close to the ground. Before pumpkin fruit grows, brightly colored flowers will form and then turn into pumpkins. Pumpkins adapt to many climates and are grown on all of the continents except Antarctica. In colonial times, settlers and natives alike relied on pumpkin as a staple of their diets. The British saw the possibilities of pumpkins as a food source and brought seeds back to Europe to enjoy as well.Pumpkins are comprised of several parts. The pumpkin is covered in a skin that surrounds the pulp, or the meaty part of the pumpkin. The stem is at the top of the pumpkin and connects to the vine. Tendrils are thin pieces of vine that tether the pumpkin to the ground to protect it

from the wind and weather. The inside of the pumpkin is known as the cavity and can contain seeds and fibrous strands. The bottom of the pumpkin is known as the blossom end because that’s where the flower started before the pumpkin formed. Most varieties of pumpkins are edible, but some taste better than others. Once pumpkins turn orange they can be eaten. People bake the meat into pies, soups and stews. It can also be used in breads and cakes. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in cake recipes much in the same way applesauce can. Adding pumpkin to recipes provides a healthy way to increase nutritional value. There are many interesting pieces of trivia regarding pumpkins. Here are some things to ponder.

Pumpkins were once believed to • eliminate freckles and were also used as a remedy for snake bites. In 2007, people in Boston earned the • world record for the most lit pumpkins with 30,128 twinkling jack-o-lanterns.Thousands of people participate in • pumpkin chucking, an event where air cannons propel pumpkins thousands of feet. Each year people compete to see who can launch a pumpkin the farthest. On September 25, 2010, people in •

New Bremen, Ohio, broke their own record when they baked a 3,699 pound pumpkin, surpassing their prior record of 2,020 pounds.

Pumpkins are a seasonal delight to many come the fall. But in addition to being delicious, they’re also interesting.

The word witch comes from the Saxon • word wicca, which means “wise one.”According to the U.S. Census Bureau, • the first official citywide Halloween celebration in the United States happened in Anoka, Minnesota, in 1921The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually • made from turnips.Halloween is the second highest • grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.50% of kids prefer to receive chocolate • candy for Halloween, 24% prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% prefer gum.According to Irish legend, Jack • O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth.Trick-or-treating evolved from the • ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.Black and orange are typically associated • with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death. An intense and persistent fear of • Halloween is called Samhnainophobia.Boston, Massachusetts, holds the record • for the most Jack O’Lanterns lit at once (30,128).

Ghost LollipopsWhat you need:

Rounded Lollipops (we used Tootsie •Pops, but Original Gourmet lollipops would be great, too.)CoffeeFilters•Small Rubber Bands•Thin Ribbon or Baker’s Twine•Black Sharpie Marker•

Directions:

For each ghost pop, I used three coffee filters.

Wrap the coffee filters over the lollipop, and secure in place with a small rubber band. (Note: it’s okay if the rubber band is not very tight. It just helps to hold things in place for a moment.)Tightly tie a piece of ribbon around the “neck” of the ghost, fluff up the under layers of the coffee filters, and use a black marker to draw the ghost’s face. Easy peasy!

Spiderweb Window Clings

What you need:Elmer’s School Glue•Assorted Glitter•Plastic Page Protector Sheets (or large •plastic baggies)

Directions:Use the glue to draw a large spiderweb on top of the plastic page protector, and sprinkle it with glitter.

Allow to dry for approximately 16-20 hours before carefully removing the spiderweb from the plastic sheet. The center will likely still be wet, so flip the spiderweb over, and allow the remaining glue to dry

for around 4-6 hours.

Once they’re dry, the glittery spiderwebs are finished and ready to decorate your home for Halloween. They’re the perfect combination of spooky and glam!

Eraser-Stamped Halloween Shirt

What you need:Bat patterns•A shirt•FreezerPaper •(I got mine at the grocery store)Fabricpaint•Pencil with an unused eraser•

Directions:Trace both bat patterns onto the NON-shiny side of freezer paper.Cut out the shapes.

Put the bats on the shirt, shiny side down, and iron them on.

Dip your eraser in some paint and stamp around the bats. Put another piece of freezer paper inside of the shirt to keep the paint from bleeding through.

I like to have the dots closer together around the bats, and then fade them out.

Let the paint dry, and then peel off the freezer paper. Heat set the paint by ironing or throwing it in the dryer. And you’re done!

However, the creepiness of a haunted house never fails to bring in big audiences, and the film made a substantial $155,464,351.6. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999) Regarded as the movie that made the “found footage” approach so popular today, The Blair Witch Project was indeed a sleeper hit, and really drew attention to itself by listing the cast as “missing” or “deceased” during promotion. It earned $140,539,099, making it one of the most successful independent films ever.7. THE CONJURING (2013) Considered one of the best horror movies of the 2010s, James Wan’s The Conjuring started a major franchise, generating popularity from the fact that the first film was rated R simply for being too scary. Marking the second time the Saw director worked with star Patrick Wilson (the first being for 2010’s Insidious), The Conjuring was an automatic success and saw $137,400,141 in earnings.8. THE RING (2002) Gore Verbinski’s The Ring started a cultural phenomenon of passing on chain mail or else, as the Naomi Watts-led film saw her trying to figure out the mystery of a videotape which seemingly killed people if they didn’t get someone else to watch it within a week. The film spawned a 2005 sequel and a reboot in 2017. The original made $129,128,133.

9. THE NUN (2018) One of the most highly-anticipated horror movies of 2018 was The Nun, the sixth film in The Conjuring Universe. Although the movie completely bombed with critics and fans alike, it made an impressive $117,450,119 in the U.S.10. THE GRUDGE (2004) Directed by Takashi Shimizu, the same person who wrote and directed the Japanese original, Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), The Grudge received mixed reviews. But it was a hit with horror fans simply for the creepiness of it. The film earned $110,359,362.11. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2009) No doubt inspired by The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity started a franchise of “found footage” films, with the first movie’s trailer including “real footage” of moviegoers watching the film in theaters to see their terrified reactions. The first film earned $107,918,810.12. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (2011) The third film in the Paranormal Activity series, which explored where it all began with the protagonist’s childhood, made almost as much as the original, coming in at $104,028,807.13. THE CONJURING 2 (2016) The sequel to The Conjuring was nowhere near as popular as the first, but it still attracted viewers who wanted to see the continuation of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story. The film made $102,470,008.14. ANNABELLE: CREATION (2017) Another film in The Conjuring Universe, Annabelle: Creation is an origin story for the possessed Annabelle doll, and although it wasn’t met with much praise at all, it still managed to earn $102,092,201.15. THE OTHERS (2001) A creepy mind-bender starring Nicole Kidman, The Others is a perfect example of how desperately audiences are looking for a genuinely scary film without special effects and with limited jump scares. The movie earned $96,522,687.

Top-grossing horror movies perfect for

HalloweenAlthough horror movies aren’t usually met with the highest of critical acclaim, year after year, the big blockbuster scares come through and make some major cash. No matter how ridiculous a horror movie might be, if it seems the slightest bit scary and is backed by effective marketing, it’ll sell.If you’re looking for a flick to get you in the mood for Halloween, here are the 50 highest-grossing horror movies of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. You can decide if they were worth the hype—and major earnings—or not.1. IT (2017) Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It was so highly anticipated, it could’ve bombed with viewers and still would’ve made a ton of money. Thankfully, the film performed well critically, holding a solid 86 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even the most die-hard King fans were impressed by it. The film earned a hefty $327,481,748.2. THE SIXTH SENSE (1999) One of the most iconic horror films of the 1990s, The Sixth Sense showcased a new side of Bruce Willis’s talent and shot child actor Haley Joel Osment—who earned an Oscar nomination for the role—to the top of Hollywood’s A-List. The M. Night Shyamalan film, best known for its classic “I see dead people” line, earned $293,506,292.3. THE EXORCIST (1973) Undoubtedly one of the best horror movies of all time, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist is a true classic. It went on to become the first horror movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and earned $232,906,145.4. IT: CHAPTER TWO (2019) Two years after Andy Muschietti’s It took the top spot on this list, its sequel has been quickly working its way up
