WALKING TO JERUSALEM

020 7684 0060 hoxtonhall.co.uk

2017 marked three major anniversaries in the Palestinian struggle: the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, the 50th year of Israel’s military occupation of the Palestinian Territories, and the 10th year of the blockade of Gaza. This same year, a pilgrimage set out to walk from London to Jerusalem – in penance, solidarity, and hope. This was the inspiration of award-winning playwright, actor, and musician Justin Butcher, who worked with human rights charity Amos Trust to mount Just Walk to Jerusalem. More than 100 walkers took part.

This is their story – walking journals and travellers’ tales from monasteries and mountain passes to Bedouin camps and desert wadis across Europe and the Middle East – brought to life in a playful and inventive blend of theatre and stand-up with a haunting and evocative soundscape and video montage created from live footage along the route.

PASSION PIT THEATRE, IN ASSOCIATION WITH AMOS TRUST, HODDER & STOUGHTON AND HOXTON HALL, PRESENTS

“So impressive … interweaving face-to-face experiences and political realities, displays the kind of unusual empathy essential in that tangled and tragic situation.” Brian Eno

WELCOMEto the Autumn/Winter Season at Hoxton Hall

Whilst basking in a record-breaking heatwave this summer, the team and I have had our focus fi rmly on autumn. We’ve been busy preparing a programme of events ranging from circus, comedy, music, theatre to poetry, so there’s something to suit most tastes. We’re taking a year o panto so we can mount an even bigger and better show next year. Oh yes we are! So look out for details in the coming months about our 2020 Christmas, family-friendly pantomime. You won’t be disappointed For this season’s highlight, we’re heading o into the snowy mountains of Switzerland to meet Mimi and the Mountain Dragon. We’re excited to be working with Skewbald Theatre Company who have adapted Michael Morpurgo’s book to create a children’s theatre piece full of puppets, magic and of course, dragons! This production is a delightful snow-fi lled treat for children. It’s always refreshing to welcome new artists to our venue and this season is no exception. Making his Hoxton Hall debut is actor/playwright Justin Butcher, performing the highly commended Walking to Jerusalem. With its inventive blend of theatre and stand-up, this emotive piece is based on the real life experiences of 100 pilgrims who, in 2017, walked from London to Jerusalem. Also appearing here for the fi rst time is Certain Blacks whose Circus Circus Circuspromises to deliver a brand new dynamic blend of circus talent to our stage. And of course, we value our long-term partners and collaborators who enrich our programme. The iconic, Jumoké Fashola and Jazz Verse Jukeboxwill be performing in November; hugely popular Swing Time Dance Company will be presenting a spookily spectacular Halloween Swing plus, after their

mesmerising show last season, Aircraft Circus are back and guaranteeing to turn up the heat even more with Sizzling Hot Circus. Providing the comedy, we have none other than the adorable and multi-talented Judi Love with Love2Laugh. From Nina Harries’ debut album launch to rising star Benedict Cork, followed by up-and-coming Eloise – who is described as having one of the most exciting voices on the music scene today – to the morbid but romantic Amigo The Devil, music at Hoxton Hall is nothing if not varied. Finally, if you fancy a tour behind the scenes of our Grade II* listed building with its magnifi cent theatre, why not join us for Open House. We hope you’re excited by the events we have programmed for you and look forward to welcoming you to Hoxton Hall this autumn.
