We are almost at the end of a very busy term with lots of things happening. We have hopefully seen the last of the hot weather and can settle into Autumn. It was a great day on Tuesday, seeing everyone dressed up as their favourite super-hero. A big thankyou to all the families who remembered their gold coin donation as we raised $350 for Ronald McDonald House, which is a great charity, who do such good work for communities across Australia. By now most families should have had a chance to have an interview with their child’s teacher to discuss any issues as we start the year, as well as develop a strong connection between school and home. These connections often prove very valuable as any child goes through school. With the swimming carnival and cross country carnival out of the way, we are now focussing our attention to our athletics carnival. All students who are already 8 or older or who turn 8 this year are currently taking part in the eliminations of the field events, including long-jump, high-jump and shot put. This activity at school means we are able to run the finals of these events at our carnival as well as our track events. We will be running our ANZAC day service as a part of our combined assembly on Wednesday 10 April as ANZAC day falls during the school holidays this year. We will be asking families to donate flowers on the day to use in the making of our wreaths and the leaders and I will be attending the regular service at Blackhead during the holidays. As a part of our ongoing training, our staff will be participating in an extended staff meeting on Tuesday 9 April to be trained in CPR and Anaphylaxis. This time will be in lieu of the last day of Term 4. We will be holding another extended staff meeting later in the year as the second half of the day in lieu. Have a great fortnight. This week students are learning to correctly dispose of the waste produced at school. Ms. McConnachie, the driving force behind the Waste Warriors and environmental education at our school, has developed a PBL lesson to explicitly teach our students about our Waste Management System. To demonstrate the expectation that at HPPS we are 'Caring', students will be able to explain why we need a waste management system, the benefits of recycling and compost for our environment and how to use the bins correctly at school. As we have welcomed two new bins on the playground and with new students arriving regularly, it is important that we continue to teach and reinforce learning. One of the new bins is named '$$$ for bottles and cans'. Students are encouraged to recycle their bottles and cans, earning 10 cents per unit for the school canteen. The other new bin is for soft plastics. The soft plastics are taken to Coles, who ship it off to Adelaide to recycle and make furniture. Next week, students will be learning about the expected behaviours in the walkways.
