In the historic heart of Germany, only one hour by train from Berlin, are the neighbouring cities of Leipzig and Halle (Saale). Music history was written in both cities. Two of the world’s most important composers lived here.
Both cities host splendid music festivals each year in June at locations historically connected with the musicians. Music lovers from around the world can encounter international stars at the Handel Festival Halle and the Leipzig Bach Festival.
The programme features more than 100 events held over 17 days, including four staged opera productions, two oratorios and a ballet performance. The beloved arias will echo at authentic locations such as the church where Handel was baptised in a series of festival concerts with international singing stars. Handel’s masterpieces can truly be “experienced” at the places of his youth and his early work.
Johann Sebastian Bach composed his passions, the ora-torios and a large part of the cantatas in Leipzig. These were performed for the first time in the main churches of St. Nicholas and St. Thomas. At the Leipzig Bach Festival, Bach’s works can be experienced where they were origi-nally performed. The major Bach performers today will appear here, including Bach’s own ensemble, the St. Thomas Boys Choir of Leipzig, now more than 800 years old. Over 100 events woll take place over ten festival days.
George Frideric Handel – a great European, well trav-elled, worldly, polyglot. His fascinating artistic biography is presented in the house where the composer was born. Multi media displays and detailed restagings, such as the miniature Baroque theatre, bring the city’s famous son to life. The exhibiton is complemented by a major col-lection of historical music instruments and the historic Wilhelm Friedemann Bach Haus.
The Bach Museum is located directly opposite the Church of St. Thomas in Leipzig. It provides insights into the life and work of the Bach family in an interactive, multimedia exhibition. Precious manuscripts from the extensive hold-ings of the Leipzig Bach Archive can also be admired here.
