Rising up from the massive redbrick building of the old Kai- speicher A warehouse is a glittering glass structure, made up of more than 1,100 window panels. The design for this 110-metre high concert hall is by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. The heart of the Elbphilharmonie is the Grand Hall with 2,100 seats, which opens its doors in January 2017. General and Artistic Director Christoph Lieben-Seutter will use this large concert venue together with two smaller halls for a varied programme that ranges from classical music and jazz to world music and contemporary music. The NDR Sym- phony Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock is to be the orchestra in residence of the Elbphilharmonie. In addition to other local orchestras and ensembles from the city of Hamburg, private concert promoters will present further concert highlights. On the eastern side, a 250-room hotel is integrated into the Elbphil- harmonie, while on the western side there are 45 private apartments. From the outer promenade of the Plaza, at a height of 37 metres, visitors can experience the maritime open-air atmosphere. The Elbphilharmonie is not just the architectural centre of the HafenCity, but also a shining symbol of Hamburg itself. It highlights the status of Hamburg as a musical metropolis. Entrances and views: Tube and Plaza Entering the Elbphilharmonie is a spectacular experience in itself. The building has its own dock for visitors arriving by boat. Access to the building is via 29 lifts and, most notably, via the so-called »Tube«. This 82-metre long curved escalator begins on the lower east side of the building and leads to the sixth floor of the west wing where a panorama window offers visitors a spectacular view down the river Elbe towards the harbour and docks. From there, a further escalator brings visitors to the Plaza. The viewing platform spans an area of approximately 4,400 m² – about as large as Hamburg‘s Town Hall Square. It is situated exactly between the old Kaispeicher and the new glass structure rising above it and offers thrilling vistas of the harbour, Elbe and city. On the roof of the old Kaispeicher, concertgoers, Hamburg citizens and tourists come together. The Plaza is divided into an outdoor circular promenade and an inner area with glass walls. From this inner area you can access the concert foyers as well as the hotel lobby and café. The illuminated foyers and stairways shimmer through the glass façade, beckoning visitors to the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie. A home for all kinds of music Hearing and seeing music is a special experience in the Grand Hall, the heart of the Elbphilharmonie. The stage for artists and orchestras is situated at the centre of the concert hall. The audience has excellent views and perfect acoustics from nearly every one of the 2,100 seats in the stalls and terraced balconies. All balconies and walls are covered by a »white skin« of 10,000 gypsum fibre panels. They have been individually designed according to computer calculations to guarantee the best possible sound. Responsible for the sound design is one of the most famous acoustic engineers in the world, Yasuhisa Toyota, who has already piloted the sound design at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Musiikkitalo in Helsinki and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The 12,500-tonne concert hall is completely detached from the rest of the building for reasons of sound isolation. The hall is carried by two separate shell-like structures, creating a space able to contain the sound waves. The four-manual organ console has 65 stops (and additional stops within the sound reflector in the concert hall ceiling) and completes the Grand Hall. The organ is built by Johannes Klais Orgelbau in Bonn, a company with a long and illustrious history in organ building. The Grand Hall offers mostly classical music concerts with large orchestras, but also unplugged appearances of jazz and pop artists. The Recital Hall with 550 seats is used predominantly for chamber music and smaller concert formats. The Elbphilharmonie resonates – today Even before its official opening, the Elbphilharmonie is attracting large audiences. Music lovers and architecture aficionados, tourists, support- ers and donors as well as the public at large participate in the building process of this signature project. Visitors of the »Elbphilharmonie Konzerte« can in addition already get an impression of the quality and the variety of the programming. Diverse and bold programming of the highest possible quality marks the concert series that Artistic and General Director Christoph Lieben-Seutter has created. As head of both the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle since 2007, he has been establishing and developing the future profile of the Hamburg musical metropolis. The »Elbphilharmonie Konzerte« include such diverse formats as experimental productions at Kampnagel, large orchestral concerts or chamber music at the Laeiszhalle, several week-long music festivals and thematically focussed concert series, as well as jazz and world music. A special emphasis of the »Elbphilharmonie Konzerte« is placed on the educational programmes, combined under the title »Elbphilharmonie Kompass«. The »Elbphilharmonie Konzerte« and the extensive educational programme would not be possible without the generous support of donors, sponsors and patrons. These supporters also gave the decisive impetus for the construction of the Elbphilharmonie. The »Elbphilhar- monie Foundation Hamburg« and the »Freundeskreis Elbphilharmonie + Laeiszhalle e.V.« coordinate this commitment into diverse projects and objectives.

Plan_QuerschnittA1_q.indd 1 17.07.15 11:17

1 Kaispeicher The old Kaispeicher A with its red brick façade is the foundation that the Elbphilharmonie is built upon. At the start of the construction process, the old warehouse for cocoa, tea and tobacco was gutted completely.

2 The Façade The glass façade consists of 1,100 individual window panels, intricately curved and with a pattern of individually printed grey chrome points. The entire surface of the façade is equal in area to two football fields.

3 The Tube At the end of the gently arched 82 metre escalator a panorama window awaits the visitor, offering a view of the harbour. Another 20 metre escalator goes up to the Plaza.

4 The Plaza The central platform, at a height of 37 metres, is an open space, accessible to the public. The outside promenade, circling the whole building, offers spectacular views of the harbour and the city skyline. The Plaza covers an area of 4,000 square metres and is about as large as Hamburg’s Town Hall Square.

5 The Grand Hall The heart of the Elbphilharmonie is the Grand Hall. With a seating capacity of 2,100, the concert hall is structured like a vineyard, with a stage at the centre, surrounded by terrace-like balconies for the audience.

6 The Sound Reflector A large sound reflector is suspended from the centre of the vaulted ceiling and guarantees excellent acoustics. The sound is evenly distributed around the concert hall by the reflector.

7 The Organ The four-manual organ, with 65 stops and additional stops located within the sound reflector on the ceiling, completes the Grand Hall.

8 The Recital Hall On the east side of the building, a Recital Hall with a flexible stage and variable seating offers places for up to 550 people.

9 The Kaistudio The Kaistudio is located within the former warehouse structure. With 150 seats, it is designed to be a place for experimental music, lectures and workshops. Above all, however, the Kaistudio is the heart of the music education area which extends over two floors of the Elbphilharmonie and provides a new home for the Klingende Museum, the interactive instrument museum.

10 The Foyer Bar The foyer bar on the 15th floor is the gastronomic centre within the concert hall. There are additional bar areas for guests to meet and relax during the intervals.

11 Hotel Located on the east side of the building is a 14-storey hotel with 250 guest rooms and a spa and conference centre.

12 Residential Apartments 45 spacious apartments with glass fronts and balconies offer spectacular views of the river Elbe, the harbour and the city.

13 Car Park Through the entrance on the east side of the building, a spiral ramp leads up to the seven-storey car park in the lower part of the building. The garage can accommodate more than 500 vehicles.
