The Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy is one of six regular force military bands serving the Canadian Forces. The band has always called Halifax its home and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2015.
The Stadacona Band’s 35 musicians can be found performing on a parade
square, in a concert hall or at the dockyard welcoming naval vessels. Over the past 75 years the band’s performances have been enjoyed by the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, foreign heads of state, military officials and the Canadian public. Whenever possible, the Stadacona Band makes its resources available to support other units of the military thus fulfilling their mandate to “provide musical support, fostering high morale, esprit de corps, and thus operational effectiveness.”
Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy
Featuring dynamic musicians from Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, and Canada, Son Latino puts a unique cross-cultural spin on Latin American music. The band is a favorite live ensemble for salsa dancers and Latin music aficionados in Halifax. Their repertoire is a mixture of traditional and contemporary tunes from all over Latin America, and includes a range of compulsively
danceable rhythms like salsa, merengue, cha cha, reggaeton, and more. With instrumentation similar to a Cuban septeto and a sound reminiscent of the great Buena Vista Social Club, Son Latino makes it impossible for audiences to sit still.
Son LatinoThe Hogtown Brass Quintet is a Toronto-based chamber ensemble dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the traditional brass ensemble. Formed in 2013, HBQ is a collaboration among five accomplished and diverse musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds, ranging from Classical to pop to jazz. Already gaining attention with their unique arrangements, collaborations
with vocalists and instrumentalists, along with their affinity for non-traditional performance spaces, the mandate of the HBQ is to bring brass chamber music to new audiences and to reinvigorate the classic brass ensemble. Their debut album Introducing… was nominated for a 2017 Toronto Independent Music Award.
