HALF YEARLY ACTIVITIES APRIL - SEPT 2018 During the first half of the year we have worked/concentrated more on reaching out to the women of different localities in providing skills for their sustainable development adding income to the family. At the same time continued regular support to the Elderly living in the community without any care and support, supporting the semi/orphan poor and needy girls for continuing their education. We have also taken up Kerala Flood relief activities. I am grateful to our patrons and the governing board members for their unstinted cooperation to all our activities. During the first half of the year we have worked/concentrated more on reaching out to the women of different localities in providing skills for their sustainable development adding income to the family. Nikita is now studying 1st class. Her parents migrated to Hyderabad from Karimnagar district for livelihood. Her father died in the year 2016 due to current shock from live wires of street lights while taking clothes. Her mother is now working as a domestic servant in one house and taking care of Nikita and another younger child. They live in a single room. Her mother is not in a position to feed the children and to send Nikita to school. There is no other income source or assets to support themselves and to meet the educational needs.

There are many such deserving children who need support

HELP THE AGED Adopt a destitute Aged: Under this program, the elderly who are living with community in the slum areas and having no one to care or support them were identified and adopted. The program ensures support for their life time. The elderly were provided with monthly sustenance support such as nutrition and toiletry items, clothes and other needed support time to time. At present we have 35 Elders under our regular support and another 20 are on occasional support Awareness on Age Care: Awareness on the increasing problems of Aged, the need to care and support them was imparted to the younger generation and society. As a part of it, campaign to create awareness and to help the aged was initiated with the students of different schools and managements. The message of extending love and concern by one and all was spread by the students and teachers of different schools.

Veera Chary is an aged widower, aged about 72 years hails from Mahaboob Nagar district. His wife died many years ago. His adopted son left him and went to his mother. Then he migrated to Hyderabad for livelihood. Some time he worked with a carpenter as he knows carpentry. Now he is not in a position to do any work due to old age and having many health problems. Now he is staying in Amberpet, where he allowed only a shelter in outside of the house. SAHARA is supporting him with monthly sustenance support from last few years.

World Elders Day was organized by SAHARA at its centre in Tirumalanagar, Amberpet, Hyderabad on Saturday, 29th Sept,2018. Speaking on this occasion Lions club Ex-President Mrs Swarajya Laxmi, Social activists Mrs Laxmi Swarajyam, Mrs L. Purna and B. Kutumba Shastry have enlightened various problems being faced by the elders of today. Presiding over the program Sahara Chief Functionary R Narsing Rao said that Old age Homes should not become the ultimate for the elders, there should be community based activity for elderly to make them to live happily in the evening of their life. It is not possible for Government to take care of increasing population of the elderly, at the same time it is the responsibility of family and society to share the responsibilities. Radhika, Rama, Bhanu, Osama and other members and volunteers have organized Games and entertainment programs for the elderly living in the community without any care and support. Awards and gifts were presented to the winners. Pocket money, refreshments, lunch, nutrition and toiletries provided to them. The elderly felt so much of happy that there is someone who takes care of them though they don’t have

any one of their own.

HEALTH CARE FOR CHILDREN & AGED:

Quarterly Health camps were organized in Amberpet slum areas of Hyderabad for the children, women and aged. More than 120 patients were covered regularly during the year. Apart from health checkup, the mothers were educated on seasonal diseases that come in and the food habits of children that affect the health of the children. Identified chronic cases were referred to different hospitals for treatment

SKILL UP GRADATION TRAINING PROGRAMS VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN TAILORING FOR YOUNG WOMEN:

With the support of Rotary Club of Hyderabad three months Tailoring and fashion design course was run benefitting 23 young women and adolescent girls living in the slum areas of Amberpet. Certificates were awarded to the trainees by the Rotarian Governor along with their president and members on 2nd May 2018. A regular centre is run by Sahara at its head office in Amberpet and trained additional 15 candidates. All the trainees were able to earn and support their families after the training.

BEAUTICIAN TRAINING: Beautician Skills were imparted among young women and adolescents. Training was provided to 10 young women and school dropout girls from poor and middle class families in Amberpet, Hyderabad. After the successful training, the candidates were referred for placements with beauty parlors and they got successful employability potential. COMPUTER/WORKPLACE ENGLISH/LIFE SKILLS TRAININGS: To create employability potential among youth and young women, regular training programs were conducted in computer basics with workplace English and life skills. After the training, they were provided free placement and referral services to different areas. So far 38 candidates belonging to weaker sections, school and college drop outs got trained under this program OFFICE ASSISTANT TRAINING: A fully fledged training with practical knowledge was given to 13 candidates who were failed in 10th/inter so that they can get equipped with the office management knowledge and get employability opportunities. These candidates were placed in different firms after the training and we have also encouraged them to complete their studies while working.

COUNSELING AND PLACEMENT SERVICES: Year round regular counseling and placement services were provided to unemployed youth and young women who were trained with us and also those who were not trained with us. During the period more than 50 candidates got help under these services.

KERALA FLOOD RELIEF ACTIVITIES

The situation in the area at the time of our relief work: Only Elderly people are living some of the houses, no one is there to help them to clean or to do some work for them. Some lost pass books and bank details and some people don’t know their A/c Nos. to approach bank. Some houses lost their belongings such as utensils, clothes, money as it occurred when they are sleeping and houses are filled with slush and silt. Relief support could not reach to individual houses at distance areas. Those who are on the road side only got relief material. Water, food grains, sanitation and clothing was a problem and was the immediate need.

SAHARA has taken up Kerala flood relief activities by our Senior Staff Ms Sajitha, along with local volunteers and Self Help Group members in the villages of Perunad, Kottukapara, Madathummuzhi, Nedumon and the areas on the bank of Kakkat river under Maniyar irrigation project of Pathanamthitta district. Apart from distribution of immediate essential needs, it has supported 22 houses which were fully merged under water in Nedumon village of Perunad Panchayat. The services and the support include reaching out to the unreached areas by other teams, cleaned the houses and approach roads, supplied clean drinking water, food grains, nutrition and toiletry items, dresses and clothes

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

Say No To Plastic: Conducted awareness camps in different schools among students, teachers and parents creating awareness on the plastic covers usage and its consequences. At the same time supplied cotton bags to replace the plastic covers. Collection of E-waste: Mobilesed E-waste collection drive and the collected e-waste was sent for recycling. Advised the public not to through e-waste on the road side of not to sell it to vendors under waste material as it may pollute the environment if it is dumped without segregating the items and recycle them

The schools participated include St. Joseph High School (Amberpet), Nalanda School (LB Nagar), Govt. High School ( LB Nagar), Govt High School ( NTR Nagar) during the month of July 2018. Ms Alekhya from Lovely Professional University, Punjab has taken active part in organizing the events as part of her community development project work.

TRAININGS & WORKSHOPS Certificate Course in Financial Literacy - Jaadu Ginni Ka: Under a CSR Initiative of Vodafone and NIIT, Finance Management training was conducted for children and youth at Sahara Training Centre. Santhosh Reddy from NIIT foundation has conducted the training on 30th Sept 18. The course covered introduction to income and expenditure, focus on savings and basic banking, mobile accounts/wallets, wise borrowing, investments, managing risks with insurance, introduction to financial planning, creating a financial plan and supporting resources.

Letzchange-Airtel Hyderabad Marathon 2018: Sahara member and program in charge Radhika has attended the workshop on June 12th, 2018 APMAS Building, Hyderabad. This workshop was to leverage the event to expand their donor base. It is to cater to every non-profit's requirements and provide solutions to their fundraising queries through interactive activities and case studies

DISTRIBUTION OF USED CLOTHES AND OTHER ITEMS

Sahara has set up a bank for clothes, nutrition, toiletry items, educational material (note books, bags, pens etc..) and other items that are useful for different age groups. The donated clothes, items, articles and consumable items will be distributed to the different beneficiaries ascertaining their needs. Thanks to Rotary Club of Hyderabad Members for donating very good clothes.

awareness campaigns among students, youth and women. Ramya Prasad Chavali has visited and discussed on WASH Study program on 11th may 2018

Lovely Professional University, Punjab:

Alekhya Modugula, pursuing BBA (Hons) from Lovely Professional University, Punjab has been associated with SAHARA for her assignment on ‘Community Development Project’ and worked in the

field from 1st June 7th July 2018. Further she has been assigned to attend for fund raising and follow up (online) up to 15th July 2018.

Patrician college of Arts and Science, Chennai:

In accordance to MSW academic curriculum 22 students along with two faculty members from Patrician college of Arts and Science, Chennai attended Orientation class on functioning of SAHARA and its projects 7th Sept 2018. This is to enlighten them for their academic and personal growth.

VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT

Sahara is involving students, youth, house wives and retired persons to be the volunteers of Sahara and encouraging then to involve in social activities. These volunteers are helping in collecting clothes, nutrition, toiletries, educational materials etc and distributing to poor and needy elderly and children. Also collecting news papers, e-waste for recycling. The proceedings of this is being used for charity.
