CD Review‘Cabaret Echoes’ –A Must for NewOrleans Jazz Fans

Reviewed by Hal SmithArcheophone’s 2-CD set of King

Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band was hailedby musicians and critical listenersaround the globe. “Cabaret Echoes”is destined to be another triumphalrelease.

Like the Oliver issue, it is also a 2-CD set. Subtitled New Orleans Jazzersat Work, 1918-1927, the material onthe disc was played by working bandscomprised of New Orleans musicians. In addition to the famous recordingsby Ory’s Sunshine Orchestra, theHalfway House Orchestra and theOriginal Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, theCD set includes lesser-known sidesby Johnny DeDroit and his NewOrleans Jazz Orchestra, Fate Marable’sSociety Syncopators, the CrescentCity Jazzers, Johnny Bayersdorffer &his Jazzo la Nove l ty Orches t ra ,Hightower’s Nighthawks, AnthonyParenti’s Famous Melody Boys, Billyand Mary Mack , Brownlee’sOrchestra, John Tobin’s MidnightSerenaders, the Original New OrleansJazz Band and Jimmy Durante’s JazzBand. (Yes — that Jimmy Durante. Hewas originally a ragtime pianist)!

Comparing the easy swing of theOry band to the staccato approach ofthe Original New Orleans Jazz Bandwould be like comparing apples tooranges. But despite the variation instyle and sound, the New Orleansinfluence is always perceptible! Someof the rarer i tems (par t icular lyDeDroit’s “Panama,” the Jazzers’“Sensation Rag” and Brownlee’s“Peculiar”) deserve to be betterknown. These discs may make that areality!

Some of the material has appearedpreviously, on other labels — but notwith th is fantas t ic sound! Forinstance, careful listening (especiallywith headphones) will reveal thepresence of string bass on the OrySunshine Orchestra and Tuxedo JazzOrchestra sides. In the past, when

bassists were listed in the personnelon the Ory and Tuxedo recordingsessions, the listings were frequentlydismissed as an error in the recordinglog. But now — break out theheadphones! Tudie Garland andSimon Marrero were there after all!As with the Oliver CD set, the soundrestoration by Doug Benson is simplyincredible!

If the music was not sufficient towarrant purchase, the discs include23 brief interviews with New Orleansmusicians and their descendants. From Babet te Ory’s surpr i s ingdescription of her father’s discomfortin the studio to Norman Brownlee’shumorous account of how his bandwon over a tough crowd, eachinterview is a treasure. And hearingOry, Abbie Brunies, Chinee Fosterand Baba Ridgely speak transportsthe listener to the era when NewOrleans Jazzmen were still exploringthe new music and adding theirindividual touch to every perfor-mance.

The CD set is accompanied by a60-page booklet with informed andincisive text by jazz scholar (andsuperb trombonist) David Sager. It isi l lus t ra ted wi th ra re photos ,reproductions of sheet music, recordlabels , posters and is careful lyannotated.

Anyone with even a passinginterest in New Orleans music shouldmake the acquisition of “CabaretEchoes” a priority! Let us hope thatthere will be a follow-up volume in thefuture as well!

“Cabare t Echoes” may beordered directly from ArcheophoneRecords at www.archeophone.com.

Sterling Bose – Forgotten Hot Jazz Cornetist

(This is the 77th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians.)

By Hal Smith

Cornetist Sterling Bose playeddriving, hot lead, had a wonderfulsense of swing and was a studio-quality music reader. “Bozo” playedwith some of the greatest names injazz and swing, but tragically is mostlyforgotten today.

Born in Florence, Alabama on Feb.23, 1906, Bose migrated to NewOrleans as a teen and played therewith a variety of groups. A 1924recording session by the Crescent CityJazzers features Bose playing a stylethat seems to be derived from NewOrleanians Paul Mares and AbbieBrunies.

In 1925, Bose and the CrescentCity Jazzers took a steady engagementat the Arcadia Ballroom in St. Louis, and the band was renamed the“Arcad ian Serenaders .” Theya l te rna ted se t s wi th FrankTrumbauer ’s Orches t ra . TheTrumbauer ensemble included BixBeiderbecke, who quickly becameBose’s major musical inspiration. Notonly did Bose listen closely to Bix’sbell-like tones night after night at theArcadia, the two became drinkingcompanions, then roommates at theCoronado Hotel. The influence wasso pronounced tha t many havemistaken Bose’s playing for Bix’s onthe late ’20s recordings by JeanGoldkette and his Orchestra.

After leaving Goldkette, Boseworked in the WGN studio orchestra

in Chicago, then joined the BenPollack Orchestra. From 1934 to 1937he played with the orchestras of JoeHaymes, Tommy Dorsey, Ray Noble,Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller, then joined the red-hot Bob CrosbyOrchestra in 1938. With Crosby, hewas not featured extensively on therecordings, but his fiery plunger-mutework on “I’m Prayin’ Humble” and theBix-like solo and punching lead on theoutchorus of “Loopin’ the Loop” arein a class with the best Swing Eratrumpet playing.

By the mid-1930s, Bozo had becomea legendary alcoholic. On too manyoccasions, his drinking negated hismusicianship and he continued tomove from one musical aggregation toanother. From the late ’30s into the’40s he played briefly with orchestrasled by Bobby Hackett, Bob Zurke,Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman, BobbySherwood, Tiny Hill and Horace Heidt;in small bands led by George Brunies,Miff Mole and Art Hodes and onbroadcasts with Eddie Condon.

Bose’s drinking did not seem to

cause a problem on most of hisrecording sessions. He soundsparticularly inspired on a 1935 datewith Vic Berton and his Orchestra.(Perhaps the presence of fellowBixophile Pee Wee Russell added extrainspiration.) On the Bob Zurke sides,Bose was in especially good form —particularly on a hot muted solo(“Nickel Nabber”) and two engagingvoca ls , r emin iscen t o f JackTeagarden’s singing (“Peach TreeStreet” and “Between 18th and 19thon Chestnut Street”). On the Condonbroadcasts, Bose’s ensemble playingand soloing on “Easter Parade” and“Fidgety Feet” still displays theBeiderbecke inf luence, p lus anawareness of the phras ing andmelodic lines played by Yank Lawson,Benny Strickler, Nate Kazebier andother Southwestern trumpeters. Bosestruggled with unresponsive chopsand his intonation on a 1944 recordingsession by the Rod Cless Quartet.Too much alcohol is the likely culpritin this case. Even so, Bose stillmanaged to play some inspiringensemble lead and solos.

In 1948, he relocated permanentlyto Florida, leading his own bands andeventually settling into a steadyengagement in St. Petersburg. Aftersuffering through a long illness, Bosecommitted suicide in June, 1958.

Sterling Bose’s name is not as wellknown as his mentor’s, or for thatmatter, most of his contemporaries.Perhaps someday there will be somelate, but well-deserved recognitionfor Sterling Bose and his magnificentcornet and trumpet work.
