HMA offers sustained life time opportunities for learning and development at all levels - the personal,
team, project, business and organizational, through both standard and customized programs. It is
continuously enhancing and enriching the quality of the experiences of Learning & Development to
create and meet a demand for off-the-job learning of 5 days per annum for every officer. HMA provides

an opportunity for exploring within oneself the potential for enlarge the personal and organizational
envelope.
The Learning & Development opportunities available at HMA are categorized as follows:
i) Standard Programs: They offer the latest developments and advancements in the area
of technology & management and thus enable officers to shoulder higher
responsibilities and to think out of the box to resolve issues and challenges faced by
them in day-to-day activities. Titles include Middle Management Development; Senior
Managers; Advanced Management (with modules covering Strategic Management,
Business Management, Finance Management & Leadership), Contracts, Communication
& Presentation, Lean, Quality, etc.
ii) Alignment Workshops: They are specifically oriented towards Divisions and ultimately
aimed at achieving Divisional / Company’s goals. The workshop series include Vision
Workshops, Strategic Policy Deployment, Kaizen etc
iii) Computer Based Programs: They offer to develop excellence in the use of software
tools such as Advanced MS Excel, MS Projects, MATLAB, MINI TAB, etc.
iv) Certification Programs: Certification programs are developed by HMA in association
with professional bodies in Financial Management, Project Management, English
Language, Six Sigma (Black Belt), etc.
v) Division Specific Programs: Programs specific to divisions such as Geometrical
Dimensioning & Tolerancing, TRIZ, Mentoring, etc. are offered in the Divisions.
vi) Senior/Corporate Level Programs: Leadership Excellence, Business Excellence and
Operational Excellence programs are conducted in association with IIMs. International
Contracts & Negotiations program is conducted in partnering with NLSIU.vii) Functional (Technical Programs) & Functional Excellence Programs: To achieve
professional excellence, a few functional (technical) programs are offered such as Basics
of Aircraft Technology, Aircraft Mechanical Systems, Aircraft Avionics System, Aircraft

Assembly & Testing, Technology Management, Flight Safety & Accident Investigation,
Network Administration, Safety & Plant Maintenance, Quality (AS 9100C), Structural &
System Design, etc. Some of these programs are sought by other Aerospace
Organizations.
viii) Conferences/Workshops/Seminars: Intra-HAL Conferences/Workshops/Seminars on
current topics, relevant to aerospace industry are conducted in Manufacturing
Excellence, SCM, PLCM, Technical Manual Writing, etc.
ix) Other Programs: Programs such as Women Empowerment, Post Retirement Planning,
Impact of Competition, HR for Line Managers, Refresher Programs for Management and
Design Trainees, are also offered regularly.

HMA presently has seven faculty members possessing proficiency and expertise in various fields like
manufacturing, quality, finance, behavioural science, management, lean, etc. The faculty team has a
good mix of youth and experience and goes all out to create the ambience that will invoke thinking, reflection and desire to renew and refresh one’s approach and attitude to the emerging challenges.
Faculty for training programs at HMA are selected both from inside HAL and from the industry or
academia outside to bring a mix of knowledge, skills and capabilities. The core competence of the
faculty team is to assess the training needs proactively and create programs for the future needs of the
company and to respond quickly to the customized requirements of internal customers.
The faculty members are also invited for Seminars, Conferences and Guest Lectures at various
institutions and forum.
Active participation as faculty at HMA by Executive Directors, General Managers and other senior
officers as well as retired officers enhances the learning through creating channels for sharing
knowledge, experience and wisdom.
HAL Management Academy (HMA) was established in August 1969, under the name of HAL Staff
College. It was re-named HAL Management Academy in June 2001 to reflect its focus on Management
Development, Consultancy and Research. HMA has completed 42 years of fruitful contribution to the
cause of Management Education and is proud of the hundreds of Management Trainees & Design
Trainees who have provided Leadership in Aerospace Industry in India in various positions. This includes
those who have been Chairmen and Members of the Board of Directors and General Managers of HAL
and other Defence PSUs.

The programs are designed with a blend of class room and outdoor activities. Case studies, group
exercises, presentations by participants, games and a few psychometric tests are part of HMA training
programs.

Out Bound Learning are also included in a few of the
programs. Pre-test & post-test are conducted and
initiation of implementation of the learning is structured
into the training programs. Individual and group action
plans are the means to transfer learning from the
classroom to the work-place.
Thick colorful foliage, lush lawns, pathways and flower
beds provide a serene retreat from the distractions of
the bustling metropolis. This ambience has a soothing
effect on the minds of the participants and takes them
away from the hectic work schedules to an idyllic
location where they can review their contribution from
new creative perspectives.

HMA has eight air-conditioned and acoustically-designed training halls with a seating capacity varying
from 20 to 50, with flexible seating arrangements. Each classroom is equipped with excellent audio-
visual facilities. An exclusive computer lab is available for hands on learning of software.

An auditorium with 160 seats is also available for viewing films/videos, conducting seminars, etc. The
well designed stage is suitable for cultural programs by participants which enrich the variety of
experiences.
HMA has a library with over 12000 books mainly on
Management topics. It has also a number of professional
journals. An impressive collection of audio-visual aids
supplement classroom learning and assignments.

Forty-eight fully furnished twin occupancy rooms are available which provide accommodation nearly to
a hundred resident participants.

The recreation facility includes a home-gym, indoor and outdoor sports areas, which provide the
participants the much needed relaxation during the off-hours and holidays. A number of Business
newspapers and magazines are also available.
