The Hakko FR-830 is a compact and low cost solution forhot air preheating of printed circuit boards. The Hakko FR-1418 BGA Rework System is

a low cost and flexible system designed for the

alignment and placement or removal of BGA,

µBGA, Flip Chip, CSP and other surface mount

components.

The FR-1418 provides precisely controlled and repeatablesolder reflow profiles. The system features a unique gantrystyle construction, which allows the PCB to remain stationary while the head moves to accomplish the X, Y, Z, and Theta alignment. This design allows a board capacity of 2 x 2 inches to 14 x 18 inches and up to 0.250 inch thick PCB with placement accuracy up to +/-0.001 inch. Larger board sizes up to 23 inches wide are possible with optional fixturing.

The system top heater is a 1000 watt forced convection/hot gas type and is integrated into the placement head. The bottom heater is a large area, low mass infra-red heaterthat provides fast and efficient heating. Preheaters are available in 10 x 12 inch and 12 x 20 inch configurations.Newly developed High Density (HD) preheaters are available for even faster preheating of difficult to solderassemblies. These large area preheaters provide preheat for the entire board instead of localized preheating whichmay cause a PCB to warp or twist.

The optical alignment system uses a CCD camera with a flat mirror and beam splitting prism for easy alignment of BGA and other area array devices. The prism provides an “up” view of the component and a “down” view of the PCB simultaneously. Alignment is as simple as matching the views. The control system features a powerful microprocessor, non-volatile memory and three thermocouple inputs.

The system includes a PC with flat panel monitor to operate the Thermal Analysis and Control software. The software allows thermocouple graphing and analysis with unlimited recipe storage. Parameters for the Preheat, Soak, Reflow, and Cooling stages of each recipe are controlled by the software. The software has Teach-mode profiling which uses the thermocouple feedback to automatically set the profile time. Password protection maintains process control and guards againstoperators changing reflow parameters without permission.Data graphs can be saved as images and include tools for calculating slope and marking time/temperature data points.

The system is available with manual z-axis control or automated z-axis with auto optics and light in/out.

BREATHEEASYSoldering work involves both metallic and organic compounds. Ordinary solders themselves contain, besides tin and lead, various levels of zinc, arsenic, cadmium, antimony and other metals. Fluxes necessary for solderingcontain activators to enhance their cleaning properties; these activators are typically organic acids. Such compounds,when heated, release byproducts of incomplete combustion,which in turn can contain noxious fumes, particulate matter, aerosols, and gasses. Prolonged breathing of thesecontaminants can lead to both short and long-term operator irritations and illness. Respiratory tract irritation, sore throats,eye irritation and headache are the most common symptoms. Allergies and asthma are often exacerbated by solder smoke.

Please note that the metals of which solder is

made do not themselves vaporize at soldering

temperatures. Lead, the metal with the lowest

vaporization temperature commonly found in

solders, does not become a gas below 2,950° F.

What you are really getting rid of is flux smoke,

scorched board material and conformal coating.

Hakko fume extraction systems remove these

contaminations from the air before the operator

can breathe them. Their simplicity and ruggedness

ensure many years of service. Filters are dispos-

able and easily changed. A wide selection of

accessories is available to meet any fume

extraction need.

Vacuum or compression systems depend upon a sealed manifold with small extraction tubes mounted to the soldering iron, or located directly above the work area, to suck up the fumes at the source. While this type of system can be the cheapest per operator, it is less efficient then the volume type - normally 75-85% of the fumes are captured by the little tubes or nozzles. Air flow in the area adjacent to the work will carry away most of the remaining fumes. The pressure differential between the solder station and filter must be regulated to preclude the possibility of excessive air flow cooling the soldering tip; poor solder joints would then result.

Volume systems require more capacious ducting and largercapture devices to draw the fumes away from the work areaand into the filtering system. The tubing need not be sealed.These units can capture up to 100% of the fumes, and are particularly useful with solder pots and other applicationswhere large amounts of smoke are generated. The cost per operator is slightly more than that for a vacuum systembecause the number of operators per system tends to be four or fewer.

Soldering work involves both metallic and organic

FILTERSThe pre-filter (available for HJ3010, HJ3080, and HJ3100)are made of treated polyester material. They remove coarseparticles, such as dust, that may be suspended in the air, andthus extend the service life of the main filter. Particles assmall as 30 microns in diameter are trapped by the pre-filter.It should be checked at least once a week, and replacedwhen clogged. Under normal conditions this will be everytwo to three weeks. The main HEPA/carbon filter purifiesthe air in two ways: The HEPA (High Efficiency ParticulateAir) filter consists of a pleated fiberglass paper medium, providing the greatest amount of surface area within the volume of the filter case. HEPA filters become loaded with particles during normal operation.

The standard filters used in Hakko HJ3100 series fumeextractors contain an activated carbon element built into the filter. The activated carbon portion of the main filter unit is designed to last the life of the main HEPA filter.Carbon Filters have adsorption ratings of 80-85%.

Hakko also offers special-purpose filters: an activated carbonfilter cartridge, 999-182, for applications where odor removalis the prime consideration, a particulate filter, 999-178, formaterial shaping operations. The filters may be used with apre-filter to keep large particles out of the main filter, thoughpre-filters are not needed with the 999-178 particulate filter.

All used filters must be handled with care when being disposed. They may contain hazardous substances such as lead, flux residue, asbestos, organic compounds, or pollutants extracted from the ambient air. Always use appropriate personal protection equipment (protective gloves, respirators, etc.) when handling used filters, and dispose of them in containment bags. Local regulations will dictate the means of disposal.

DANGER!Never use a Hakko Fume Extractor to extract fumes fromhighly flammable liquids or gasses!There is a serious risk of

severe injury or death due to explosion or fire.

Certain airborne contaminants, when in contact with activatedcarbon, can undergo chemical reactions resulting in heat. The Hakko fume extractor MUST NOT be used to

extract fumes from these substances.

The HJ3100 is a high-mass flow, low-vacuum system.Contaminated air is captured from the workplace surrounding the soldering station by the hood, and trans-ferred to the HJ3100 by flexible ducts. Within the HJ3100,two filters, comprising three stages of filtering, remove thecontaminants from the air. The purified air is then returnedto the area where the HJ3100 is located.

The Hakko FG-100 Thermometer measures

soldering iron tip temperatures as well as solder

pot temperatures (with optional temperature

probe). Lightweight, easy to replace sensors

provide accurate measurement of tips for

verification or calibration processes.

When the MAX HOLD feature is enabled the

thermometer will display the maximum tempera-

ture measured. To preserve battery life the auto

shutoff feature turns the thermometer off when

cause oxidation and corrosion, which greatly

decreases the life of your soldering iron tip.

The Hakko FT-700 tip polisher helps increase

the life of your tip by keeping it clean and free

from oxidation quickly and easily.

• FAST and EASY way to keep your soldering iron tips clean and free from oxidation

• Two spinning polishing brushes (brushes will not damage tip plating)

• Lead-free chemical paste for immediate tip tinning• FS-100 chemical paste may be used with or without the FT-700 to remove tip oxides and restore tips

TIP POLISHER

Follow these steps to restore an oxidized tip: 1. Insert the heated tip between the two spinning polishing brushes to clean the tip and remove the oxide.2. Dip the tip into the FS-100 lead-free chemical paste to re-tin the tip. The fine powder Sn is melted immediately. 3. Insert the tip between the spinning brushes of the FT-700 to remove the melted chemical paste. 4.Tin the tip with the solder you are currently using before placing the iron in the holder.

This process will restore new life to your soldering iron tips. Incorporate the above procedure into your soldering routine and you will quickly realize the benefits of maintaining a clean, oxidation-free tip, especially when working with Lead-Free alloys.

NOTE: Lower temperatures (315˚C/600˚F) work best when restoring an oxidized tip.

Polishing Brush

The FS-100 Chemical Paste is a quick and easy solution for oxide removal from soldering tips. The FS-100 does not contain Diammonium Phosphate and will not corrode the PWB or tip (Conforms to JIS-Z-3197 6.6.1 test method). Use the FS-100 by itself or in combination with the HAKKO FT-700 for enhanced effectiveness.

The series of cable stripping tools will strip small coaxial

cables (5-6 mm) and round cables with diameters between

4 and 50 mm. The cable strippers are fitted with an

adjustable internal blade for an accurate cutting depth.

A simple twist and pull action strips the sleeve and

allows for easy removal.

The CHP screwdrivers feature ergonomic handles with

a tapered soft grip for operator comfort. A rotating cap
