Hair Transplant: Treatment for Hair Loss, Hair Fall and Baldnesshttp://www.hairsg.com
Hair is a protein element that grows
from follicles found in the dermis, or
skin, according to Wikipedia. It is an
essential part of the body that is mostly
taken for granted especially for men.
Women, however, are more conscious
and really takes time to care for their
hair. But with this, hair will come to
some point that it becomes thinner and
sometimes fallout.
There are available options on to treat
hair loss or hair fall. Hair transplant
procedure can help bring back the
appearance of a full or at least a fuller
head of hair.
What is a Hair Transplant?
Hair Transplantation surgery involves removing a narrow strip of hair-
bearing scalp from the back of the head and using it to fill an area with
thin or no hair. Most hair transplants are performed by the doctor with
anesthesia.
To transplant a hair, the surgeon cleans the scalp first, then injects
anesthesia to numb the area where a 3 to 4 inch strip of scalp is
removed. Using a scalpel, a strip of scalp will be removed by the
surgeon and sets it aside and sews the scalp to close. This area should
be immediately hidden by the hair around it.
Then, the surgeon divides the strip of removed scalp into roughly 500 to
2,000 tiny grafts containing an individual hair or just a few hairs each. The number and type of graft used depends on the hair
type, quality and color as well as the size of the area where it will be transplanted.
After the grafts are primed, the surgeon cleans and anesthetizes the area where the hair will be placed, makes a hole or slits
with a scalpel or needle, and skillfully places each graft in one of the holes.
Depending on the extent of the procedure, the transplant will take almost four to eight hours. Supplementary sessions may
be needed if losing hair is continuous or if a person still wants to have a thicker hair.
What to expect and its recovery?
After hair transplant surgery, the scalp may be very tender and may need to take pain medications for several days. The
surgeon will require the patient to wear a surgical dressing over the scalp for at least a day or two. The surgeon may also
prescribe an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory drug to be taken for several days following surgery. After surgery, most
people are able to return to work after two to five days.
After two to three weeks of surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but the new growth of hair will then be noticed within a
few months. Most people will have achieved 60% of new hair growth after six to nine months. Some surgeons prescribe the
hair-growing drug minoxidil (Rogaine) to improve hair growth following transplantation, but it is not known how effective this
is.
What are the risks and costs of the surgery?
The procedure is rarely covered by insurance and the costs may range from $4,000 to $15,000 depending on the amount of
hair to be transplanted. As with any surgical procedure, hair transplantation carries risks, which includes bleeding, infection,
scarring, and unnatural-looking new hair growth.
Some people may experience inflammation or infection of the hair follicles, called folliculitis, around the time new hair growth
starts. This can be relieved with antibiotics and compresses. Another potential risk is the sudden loss of transplanted hair,
called shock loss. Fortuitously, this hair loss is rarely permanent.
If any person will be bothered by thinning hair or balding, hair transplantation can considerably improve appearance and self-
confidence. Nevertheless, it is important to apprehend that hair transplantation is just that transplantation of hair that
someone already have to a place where it is more visible where it does not create new hair.
To minimize the risks and improve the success of surgery, it is important to undergo hair transplantation only if a person is
healthy. It should be always discussed the potential risks and benefits of any surgery with the doctor.
