In the Journal of Hellenic Studies (Vol. XVII, p. 290)Mr. J. A. R. Munro publishes an inscription on a limestonebase, copied by him in 1894 at Balat. It reads: 'Ау*9^ ти^тц.'H ßouXij xal 6 ájjfAOí 'ASpiavécúv ÍTf{|M)asv K[X.] ÜaropveTvav 6uya-

TÍpa Tt. KXoro[8(]ou UseeiavoO, yuvaíica Г. 'IoiA. AiXtocvoO KXexvSpou. . . Commenting on the inscription, Mr. Munro says: «Thestone may have been brought from Hadriani (Beyje),although the distance is considerable. Both the forms,

АДР1АЫЕПЫ and AAPlArJilfsl, appear on the coins (Head,Hist. Num. p. 455 ). On the other hand there is some diffic

ulty in believing that a heavy block (and that not a marble one) was transported about 40 miles over bad roads

and mountainous country. Ancient remains exist at Balat

(notably the great sarcophagus figured in Le Bas), but the

name to be assigned to the ancient town is uncertain. Ramsay suggests Neo- Caesarea (Hist. Geogr p. 181). Did the

territory of Hadriani once extend to Balat, and was thebishopric of Neo-Caesarea carved out of it? Or is it possible that there was after all an Adriania, the Adraneia of certain of the Notitiae, distinct from Hadriani? This question is discussed by Ramsay (Hist. Geogr. p. 160-1), andthe possibility gives a certain interest to our inscription *.

Whatever may be the ancient name of Balat, there is

no doubt that Ramsay and Munro are right in suggesting

the distinction between the two cities of Hadrianoi and Ha-drianeia. The evidence of the Notitiae and Council Lists onthis question is briefly as follows :

The Council of Chalcedon (A. D. 451 ) gives David Adria-nensis,

who appears seven years later as David Andria-пае ; in both cases this bishop's see is placed in Hellespon-tus. In the second council of Nicaea (787) a distinction appears between Adriani in Bithynia and Adrania in Helles-

pontus. Finally Notitiae VIII and IX give 'A&piavûv (in Bithynia) and *.\SpaveiTç (in Hellespontus). The Bithynian city

is clearly that which in earlier times was included in Mysia,

the modern Adranos, on the Rhyndacus, near Beyje.

Ramsay, after discussing the possibility of a double entry,

such as sometimes occurs in these lists, leaves the matter

in some uncertainty. With the object of obtaining furtherlight, I have drawn up a list of the published coins, hitherto all attributed to Hadrianoi, and of such other pieces

as are accessible to me. Dr. Imhoof- Blumer has generously

placed at my disposal descriptions of a number of coins in

his own collection1. My thanks are also due to Dr. H. Dres-

sel and Dr. H. Gaebler, and to M. Svoronos, who have noted

the coins at Berlin and Athens. Consequently, although other

collections, notably that in the Bibliothèque Nationale at

Paris, may contain a few types not included here, the fol

lowing list may be regarded as fairly complete. For thepresent purpose, I have not thought it necessary to noteminute variations of type.

This partition of the coins according to the presence or

absence of the € in the ethnic tells its own tale'. Certain

types, it is true, are common to both places; but they are not

of such a peculiar kind as to provide any argument against

the partition. On the other hand, the important type of

Hermes standing before a river-god2 is confined to Ha-

drianoia. Conclusive evidence is furnished by the magistra

tes' names, which never overlap.
