News celebrated its 30th anniversarywith an upgrade of its website atwww.hadleywood.org and pleadedunsuccessfully for help from any of the ITexperts living in the area. November wastime for the annual bonfire and fireworksdisplay (26) on a lovely autumnal evening.St Paul’s Pre-school concluded a yearof anniversaries by celebrating its tenthand Graham Sharp the Chairman of theHadley Wood Association continued hisefforts to wind up the Parkway Fund set upin 1998 to oppose the building by GNER ofa new station and (huge) car park on thefields aside Waggon road. December’smagazine celebrated the opening of thenew playground (27, 28) and registered thecommunity’s profound gratitude to MariaEvans, Laura Gassner and their team.Finally we said goodbye to Gareth andAnne Evans moving to Scotland after overfifty years living and contributing to thecommunity in Hadley Wood.

In the same month pleasure at theHadley Wood Golf Club’s celebration of its90th anniversary was diminished by newsof the closure of the Horticultural Societyafter forty years active service.The Women’s Institute (20) celebrated

another birthday and Hadley Wood’s newrunning club raised over £3000 for charity.In August many residents celebrated the90th birthdays of two World War 2 RAFpilots Peter Blackmore and Tom Adams.Maggie Govender a distinguished athleticscoach received the Diamond JubileeWoman of Achievement award for her workwith disabled people and the 100thanniversary of William Booth (21) founderof the Salvation Army and local residentgave cause for thought and appreciation.The famous Hadley Green Garage

purveyor of Bentleys and Jaguars changedhands after being run by three generationsof the Green family and a proposal for anew cycle track around the periphery ofWrotham Park (22) fell on deaf ears.By September resurfacing of Crescent

West had taken place (23). An interestingnew housing project for older women wasformed in Barnet. The ballet school andthe tennis (24) and bridge clubs continuedtheir successful existence based at theHadley Wood Association Centre, ourvillage hall, and all enjoyed its new flooring.At Bartram’s Lane field our Youth footballclub now in its fifth year continued to thrivewith teams from age Under 8 to Under15 yrs (25). October’s Hadley Wood

Another year in Hadley Wood. Residentsdrove or took the local train to work. Somewent via the new white gates into Barnet ordown Hadley Road (1). The Friends ofMonken Hadley kept up appearances andanother group of Friends fought to keep theancient Barnet market (2) open. Childrenwent to school. Celebrities and footballersmoved into and out of the area. One ofthem (Lemar) made their day for many ofour local schoolchildren by joining them inclass (3). Local residents raised incrediblesums of money for charities (4) and agroup of determined young mothers startedfundraising to improve the playground.After the January’s tug of war (5), heavysnow in February (6,7,8) created havoc formotorists and fun for the children.Middlesex University moved out from its

Cat Hill and Trent Park (9) sites leavingbehind a nightmare legacy of unpopulardevelopments. Trent Park’s café closed anda French firm created an aerial playground(10) in the trees. More residents startedrunning with a new Hadley Wood RunningClub (11). The HWA car park used rightfullyby parents of schoolchildren and wrongfullyby a group of commuters (12), continuedto deteriorate. In April Karen (13) in theticket office at Hadley Wood station wasgiven a Stakeholder Recognition Award andour primary schoolchildren got stuck into thegalaxy via the Bradford Robotic telescope(14). Financial support for the playgroundrenovation fund continued with a fundraising dinner (15) and auction. In May StPaul’s church organized a “More than Gold”weekend packed with fun and events of allsorts (16,17,18). In June, St Mary’s church
