Hackney Wick on the edge of the Olympic Park is home to one of London’s fastest-growing and most innovative
business and creative communities.
The former mills and plastics factories from the previous industrial centre now house over 600 creative industry workspaces where architects, photographers, digital artists and designers with a global reach work side by side. Around this highly entrepreneurial and knowledge-based business community is a growing café, arts and leisure culture as galleries, festivals, pop-ups and restaurants develop amidst this burgeoning creative district.
FOREWORD
Hackney as a whole has seen 21% business growth since 2004, nearly double London’s average rate, and we are committed to maintaining the conditions that will allow this trend to continue. This growth has been concentrated primarily in digital media, technology and consulting.
Wick is an area rich in potential, home to almost a third of the Olympic Park, including the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre which will bring unrivalled digital connectivity to the area, and part of the East London Tech City initiative. Major transport improvements have already been made in the area with direct links to the Underground network and excellent international connections, with further improvements planned.
Multi-million-pound plans are also in place to improve Hackney Wick Overground station during the next three years. This investment will provide the opportunity to transform the area around the station and make it a fitting hub for a destination that will offer business space, restaurants, new homes, cafés, shops and parklands, as well as a 6,000-seat multi-use venue.
There are ambitious plans for the wider area after Games time with new parkland and whole new neighbourhoods being created, bringing even greater opportunities for business growth. This brochure will tell you more about what Hackney Wick can offer your business, and why you should move to one of the most exciting, dynamic and creative parts of London.
Jules PipeMayor of Hackney
Hackney Wick and Fish Island have potential to be the New Soho, if the right advantage is taken of new media infrastructure and the existing arts community is supported to grow into the Olympic Park.Space Studios
Hacknex the
place
“Hackney Wick is situated in a highly entrepreneurial local economy: the borough’s number of new business starts grew by four per cent from 2004-2009, while the number of new start-ups in London as a whole decreased by six per cent over the same period. The galleries, pop-up exhibitions and art installations in the old waterside warehouses mix with a growing hospitality sector for entertaining clients, networking or socialising after work, such as the Hackney Pearl.
New small offices, studios and workspaces are planned with ACME studios, offering 50 brand new spaces to artists on their waiting list, with London Thames Gateway Development Corporation proposing a significant creative workspace of circa 6,000sqm, as part of the Hackney Wick Hub development.
The area has even created its own arts festival, Hackney WickED, staged by local artists to promote the work of international and local practitioners through local galleries. The three-day event last year hosted more than 25,000 people, with access given to more than 20 buildings in the area to create pop-up galleries and studios, in addition to music, open studios, graffiti jams and workshops.
Median household income for Hackney Wick is £36,920, compared with £21,949 in Newham, and £38,745 for Islington.
Hackney Wick is home to 12,000 people and has experienced eight per cent growth in the past two years alone, and more than four times that of Shoreditch. Local residents live and work in what is considered by many to be one of the most up- and-coming and fashionable places in London, with new housing developments such as Telford Homes’ Matchmakers Wharf development taking advantage of this.
The area has close to 3,000 employees and business owners, with new residential and commercial development plans including space for a possible 1,500 new homes, and up to 134,000sqm of commercial floorspace, including that associated with the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre.

YOUR CUSTOMERS
Atotal of 91,000 square metres of new workspace with the unrivalled power and digital connectivity of the Olympic Park will
be provided after the Games in the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, both based in Hackney Wick – enough digital infrastructure for a city of 250,000 people.
After the Games, the Wick’s Handall Arena will become a 6,000-seat multi use sports venue with flexibility for hosting a range of large sporting, cultural and entertainment events allied with regular community use.
The north-west of the Olympic Park, now named East Wick, will feature a mixed-use neighbourhood along with town houses, mews maisonettes and apartments. These will be built within a new creative district incorporating the Main Press Centre and International Broadcast Centre. A primary school, two nurseries, a community centre, and new shops will serve the area.

HACKNEY WICKHUB
London Thames Gateway DevelopmentCorporation has approved plans for theHackney Wick Hub (pictured)
INTERNATIONALTRANSPORT LINKS
This is part of an orbital route around and into the capital, due to complete by late 2012 linking Surrey Quays in the south east with Clapham Junction – meaning Hackney Wick would be barely half an hour from south west London Six regular bus routes also stop within the Wick area serving destinations including Liverpool Street, Shoreditch and London Bridge. Further frequency and capacity improvements are planned as part of the 2012 legacy development work.
An example of a company making use of Hackney Wick’s well-connected location and affordable space is major international distributor Central Books, which employs 40 staff, and housing five million books on site from 200 publishers.
Hackney Wick is 15 minutes away from London City Airport’s global business destinations, and 45 minutes away from
Stansted Airport. The London Overground station at Hackney Wick connects the area to Europe via St Pancras, Stratford and Ashford international stations.
London Overground is not only linked to the Underground network at Highbury & Islington and Stratford, but provides a regular, swift and direct service to north, west and south west London including to Acton, Shepherd’s Bush, Richmond, Imperial Wharf and Clapham Junction.

Hackney Wick is home to a maturing economy made up of globally-acclaimed, award-winning artists such as Gavin
Turk and the Chapman Brothers; workspace providers such as Space Studios; and galleries The Smokehouse, See Studios, Schwartz Gallery and Top and Tail Gallery.
Creativity thrives in over 600 creative industry workspaces hosting exhibitions, film screenings, live music and more. For example, The Yard, based at Queen’s Yard E9, is a performance space that has hosted theatrical productions, and was transformed recently into what was thought to be London’s only warehouse cinema. These spaces and venues are supported by art galleries, places to meet and eat and pop-up projects which also function as meeting space for clients.
ARTS, CULTURE & THE ECONOMY
The scene now has its own annual festival, Hackney Wicked, celebrating this creativity and allowing the public a glimpse of the art world through a three-day programme of open studios and exhibitions. Hackney WickED is run as a Community Interest Company - for more information, visit www.hackneywickedfestival.co.uk

YOUR BUSINESS HERE
The DIA Media Group has all of its companies’ headquarters in Hackney Wick for a number of reasons. We had been operating all of our offices from sites including Westminster, Camden, and Buckinghamshire and needed to bring them all together under one roof, so we required a space that was large enough and affordable. Being in the heart of a regeneration zone sees the landscape and outlook change on a daily basis, which is an amazing catalyst for creative thinking. Hackney Wick will no doubt become a perfect hotbed for new businesses and families to live and work alongside each other for many years after the London 2012 Games.David Brady, Joint MD, DIA Media Group
