The ACT and SAT testing schedules are out. Please be aware that the ACT includes a writing component, which is optional. The Guidance Department strongly recommends that each student take the written portion of the ACT or SAT. If you have previously taken the ACT or SAT without the writing component, you may not register for the writ-ten portion alone; you must retake the entire test. Many colleges are requiring it for admissions for the Class of 2017. Please check with the college office of admissions to find out if the college(s) to which you are applying will require the writing portion of the tests and which tests they prefer. The schedules for both tests as well as registration dead-lines may be found in the Guidance Office or on each of the testing web sites. Check collegeboard.com for the SAT or act.org for the ACT.

PSAT - This is a preliminary to the SAT, which will be administered Wednesday, October 19, 2016. This test is a requirement for jun-iors. In addition to providing prepa-ration for the SAT, the PSAT gives a student the opportunity to qualify for National Merit Scholarship monies. This test measures critical reading, math problem solving, and writing skills. The test will take place at 7:40 A.M. in the cafeteria. Soph-omores are encouraged to take this test as well. Limited seating is available. Cost is $20. Sopho-mores, please see Mrs. Ulbrich to register. Registration will continue through October 5th.

Scholarships

Scholarship opportunities are be-ginning to come in. As they arrive, they will be included in the Monday,

Guidance Office News, Daily An-nouncements throughout the school, posted in the Guidance Office and to the HCP Homepage. In addition, we have copies of financial aid web sites available in the Guidance Office. If you come across a good web site, please share that with us. Many of our stu-dents receive the Kalamazoo Com-munity Foundation Scholarships. View these opportunities at: www.kalfound.org. The Remynse Scholarship appli-cation for 2016-2017 is open and avail-able at www.kalfound.org

College Application Process Reminder

Read Your HCP College Planner!!College applications are to be pro-cessed through the Guidance Office. Once you sign in your completed ap-plications to Mrs. Ulbrich, Mrs. Ulbrich will review and complete any school re-ports required. (i.e.: official transcripts, unofficial test scores). The entire appli-cation will then be copied and mailed (if necessary) from HCP. Many colleges require letters of recommendation. It may take 1-4 weeks for a letter of rec-ommendation to be completed, so be aware of your colleges’ deadlines for admission. You must order “official” ACT/SAT score reports, directly from the testing company, if your college choice requires this. Payment is by credit card.

College visits to Hackett

Each year in the Fall only, the Guid-ance Department schedules many “college visits” where admissions rep-resentatives visit our HCP campus. Each representative presents material to our students about their university, entrance requirements, GPA and ACT/SAT acceptable test score ranges, col-lege life, extra curricular activities, etc. Students are allowed to sign up for three of these sessions. Sign up sheets for these visits are found in Mrs. Ul-brich’s office. Students must sign up 24 hours in advance of each visit. Please see the Hackett Website for a current schedule of colleges visiting Hackett.

Rufus Reid – Biography

“A Master Evolves--Bassist As-serts Himself as Composer” ~Will Friedwald for The Wall Street Journal. For several years, Rufus has been taking the lead as a bandleader, and this ambitious project showcases his evolution, putting the emphasis on his compositional skills.” Motéma Music released Quiet Pride – The Elizabeth Catlett Project Feb 11, 2014. One day after his 70th birthday! The Quiet Pride CD showcases hand-picked stellar professionals and earned two GRAM-MY nominations in the 57th GRAMMY Awards of 2015.

For much of his life, Rufus has per-formed with multiple generations of our legends of jazz. Several years ago he became a bandleader and com-poser. This latest release, Quiet Pride – The Elizabeth Catlett Project is a five movement, hour-long suite for a 20-piece orchestra. This composition is different from anything Rufus has written before. Rufus continues to step out of his box, out of his comfort zone. This composition was the result of the generosity of The Raymond and Bev-erly Sackler Composition Commission. It was premiered as a four-movement work at The Univ of Connecticut atStorrs where the grant was awarded. A fifth movement was composed and the suite Quiet Pride was premiered at The Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, LA. It has also been performed at Bucknell University, PA, at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, NYC, at The Jazz Standard in NYC and at L’Astral, as part of The Jazz en Ralafe Festival, in Montreal.

Rufus has written for string orchestra, jazz ensembles large and small, con-cert bands, double bass ensemble pieces and a solo bass composition. Rufus’ three-movement symphony or-chestra composition, Mass Transit, was premiered in 2011, by The Idyll-wild Arts Academy Symphony Orches-tra, conducted by Peter Askim. The University Symphony Orchestra of

The University of Louisville, conducted by Kimcherie Lloyd, performed Mass Transit in 2014.

Caress The Thought (solo bass) was composed for bass virtuoso Diana Gannett and is featured on her 2015 CD, “Artemis in the Oak Grove.” The orchestral arrangement of Reid’s Ca-ress The Thought was performed in 2011 with soloist Joe Guastafeste, re-tired principle bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Rufus Reid is equally known as an ex-ceptional educator. Dr. Martin Krivin and Reid created the Jazz Studies & Performance Program at William Pat-erson University. It was the first mod-ern, professional grade jazz program, with prominent faculty and a focus on small ensemble performance. Reid retired after 20 years, but continues to teach, conducting Master Classes, workshops, and residencies around the world.

Rufus' book, The Evolving Bassist, published since 1974, continues to be recognized as the industry standard as the definitive bass method. Janu-ary 2000, the book's Millennium Edition was published. In December 2003, The Evolving Bassist DVD was released. This two and one half hour DVD also offers a Concert view, featuring Mul-grew Miller and Lewis Nash.

Rufus Reid's major professional career began in Chicago and continues since 1976 in New York City. He has toured and recorded with Eddie Harris, Nancy Wilson, Harold Land & Bobby Hutch-erson, Lee Konitz, The Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Dexter Gor-don, J.J. Johnson, Art Farmer, Stan Getz, Kenny Burrell, Kenny Barron and countless others. He continues to record adding to his extensive discog-raphy, 18 of which are under his own name.

Reid continues to lead his “Our Front” Trio with pianist, Steve Allee and drum-mer Duduka Da Fonseca. He released “Out Front ~ The Rufus Reid Trio” on Motéma Records in 2010. Reid record-

ed with this trio again, adding guests, Bobby Watson, Freddie Hendrix, JD Allen, and Toninho Horta, releasing “Hues of a Different Blue” on Motéma in 2011.

“Hues” (Hues of a Different Blue) should be considered a sterling, de-finitive exemplar of what an ideal jazz album should be–fabulous musician-ship in service of the music, expansive tunes played with succinctness and re-straint and variety.” Mark Keresman – Jazz Inside Magazine

Born on February 10, 1944 in Atlanta, GA., Rufus Reid was raised in Sacra-mento, California where he played the trumpet through junior high and high school. Upon graduation from Sacra-mento High School, he entered the United States Air Force as a trumpet player. During that period he began to be seriously interested in the bass. Af-ter fulfilling his duties in the military, Ru-fus pursued a career as a professional bassist. He moved to Seattle, Wash-ington, where he began serious study with James Harnett of the Seattle Sym-phony. He continued his education at Northwestern University in Evanston,Illinois, where he studied with War-ren Benfield and principal bassist, Jo-seph Guastefeste, both of the Chicago Symphony. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Music Degree as a Per-formance Major on the Double Bass. Rufus Reid truly continues to be THE EVOLVING BASSIST.

national Honor society scHedule and selection policy, 2016-2017

WHAT DOES THE NHS MEMBERSHIP SELECTION COMMITTEE CONSIDER?

Five teachers make up the National Honor Society Selection Committee. According to the National NHS by-laws, they must seek members who are strong in the four areas of academics, citizenship, leadership, and volunteer service. To qualify academically, the potential member must have an overall GPA of at least 3.4 after the end of the first semester of the current academic year. Good citizenship and leadership are determined by the student’s behav-ior inside and outside the classroom, as well as through the school, non-school, and church activities in which he or she is involved. This information is provided by the potential member on a resume which he or she submits and through a survey of all teachers and adminis-trators at HCP. The student must also have been active in volunteer service, which might include work with organ-ized groups or informal service to the family and neighbors. It is important that there be a substantial record of volunteer service beyond that which was completed for required school or Confirmation service hours. There is no quota in the number of members who may be selected. We hope this helps clarify the NHS selection process.

NEW MEMBER SELECTION

In late January 2017, it will be time to begin the selection of new mem-bers into National Honor Society, so we would like to clarify this process for those of you who are unfamiliar with it.

January, 2017: Each sopho¬more or junior who is not an NHS member and has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 will receive an invitation to an informa-tional meeting.

Late January/Early February 2017, Informational Meeting in the Auditori-um: The purpose and activities of NHS will be ex¬plained and instructions for applying for membership will be given

at an in-formational meeting for pro-spective members.

February, 2017, By this time, all ap-plications from those eligible students who are interested in applying for NHS mem¬bership are due to the NHS Ad-visors, Ms. Johnston or Ms. Luzenske.

March, 2017: A committee of five faculty members will meet to decide which applicants will be accepted into NHS. The NHS advisors will chair the committee, but they are not voting mem¬bers of the committee. There is no quota for how many students may be selected, but all students admitted into membership must be strong in all four national NHS areas of volunteer service, citizenship, leadership, and academics.

Late March, 2017: Each applicant will be notified of the committee’s decision in a letter mailed to his or her home. Those students who were not selected for membership will receive a letter which asks them to meet with the ad-visors to discuss the committee’s deci-sion. Non-selected sophomores will be helped to under¬stand what they need to improve in order to successfully ap-ply for mem¬bership in their junior year.

Friday, April 21, 7:15 - 7:40 A.M., and Monday, April 24, 7:15 - 7:40 A.M., in the auditorium: Induction Ceremony re-hearsals (2 practices) for all new and current members.

Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. in the auditorium: In-duction Cer-emony for all new mem-bers and Re-induction Ceremony for all current members.
