HACC YORK CAMPUS NEWS NOVEMBER 2017
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CAMPUS VP
THANK YOU for making my first year at HACC an enjoyable and
exciting learning experience. Over the past twelve months, I have gotten
to know many of you very well and look forward to spending time over
the next year connecting and building stronger personal and professional
relationships with my HACC family.
As I write this month’s newsletter, I am reminded of a recent article
shared by our President, Dr. Ski. The article was entitled: The Need for
Slower Administrators by Thomas J. Pfaff. In summary, the article
postulates that for administrators to be actively engaged in campus
conversations, and to be the models to the rest of the college, they need to
allow their campus colleagues to expect authentic conversations and less
appearance of busyness.
I can attest that slower is sometimes better. We all should strive for less
hurriedness and busyness and more informal interactions in spaces such
as our student commons, our faculty bays, the Glatfelter Community
Room, or at the Roosevelt Tavern. Hurried schedules, family calendars,
and ever changing job expectations often deprive us of opportunity to get
to know each other. To build connections, we should seek time to meet
face-to-face on campus, discuss ideas, and share opinions about the future
of our campus.
In the days ahead, when you see me enter your workspace, there is no
need to stress. I am simply slowing down to say hello, to ask how you
are, and to see how I can make your day-to-day responsibilities more
efficient and productive so that together, we advance the York campus.
Thank you for taking the time to read our November newsletter.
I wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.
Dr. Darryl Jones

2017 RISING STARS CELEBRATION
On Wednesday, October 4, 2017, HACC’s York Campus hosted its annual Rising Stars Celebration to honor
and congratulate students who have successfully completed our reading courses and maintained a 3.0 GPA or
higher. Each student received a certificate with their friends and family looking on. Special thanks to Dr.
Darryl Jones, Dr. Ski, Dr. Marjorie Mattis, and Ms. Carolyn Thayer who spoke at the ceremony and shared
their personal stories of struggle and success. Thanks to the Rising Stars Committee—Rabyia Ahmed, Cathy
Rosenkrans, Carolyn Thayer, Kim Mong, Ebony Ratleff, Jessica Layton, Tracey Schwartz, and Theresa
Witkowski—for putting together this memorable event.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Counseling Services served over 120 boxes of popcorn during their awareness event for Domestic Violence
Awareness Month. In addition to munching on purple-boxed popcorn, many students signed a pledge against
domestic violence, took purple ribbons and stickers, and engaged with a prevention advocate from the YWCA.
The pledge below was adapted from the North Bay Police Department in Ontario and a copy is available in
Counseling & Advising if you didn’t get a chance to sign it.
Pledge Against Domestic Violence
I will create safe healthy relationships at home
I will treat others with dignity and respect
I will teach children the value of a healthy relationship
I will not condone or commit acts of domestic violence
I will not blame victims of domestic violence

TREE DEDICATION
On October 20, 2017, the campus held a tree dedication ceremony to honor the
memory of Katherine Eileen “Leenie” Dunn, younger sister of Associate
Academic Dean, Liz Dunn. The ceremony was attended by Liz’s parents,
Frances “Miki” Dunn and Gordon Dunn.
Liz shared, “Growing up in Baltimore City, every day was a ‘Lizzie and
Leenie adventure.’ We shared a room. Our parents dressed us alike. We played
with Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that our mom made for us. We sang along
to Sesame Street songs. We visited neighbors we were taught to call ‘Grandma
and Grandpa Badders’ and ‘Grandma Louise and Grandpa Tony.’ We’d say
goodnight to our dad, at his desk surrounded by books, who took night courses
working toward his law degree.”
Leenie passed away unexpectedly less
than a month after celebrating her fourth
birthday.
“I have always wondered what Leenie would have been like as an adult—
what path would she have chosen? Since our father always encouraged
me to pursue higher education, I assume Leenie would have attended
college and excelled in her chosen career. When presented with the
opportunity to purchase a tree to help support HACC students pursue their
educational dreams, and to dedicate that tree to a loved one, I knew I had
to have a tree
planted in Leenie’s
honor.”
If you are interested
in donating a tree to the campus, please see Dr. Darryl
Jones for more information.

#HACCPROUD OF OUR NURSING PROGRAM
Of the 322 graduates of the associate degree program who took the NCLEX-RN licensure examination between
October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017, 296 (91.93%) were successful at gaining licensure on their first
attempt.
Of the 62 graduates of the practical nursing program who took the NCLEX-PN licensure examination within the
same time period, 60 (96.77%) were successful at gaining licensure on their first attempt.
This percentage of successful licensure candidates, on their first attempt at the NCLEX examination, exceeds
both the National and Pennsylvania state average, and speaks to the quality of the HACC program.
Congratulations to the faculty and students for their hard work and dedication to the profession.
We are HACC Proud! And together, we make a difference in the communities we serve.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHT
James Schadewald is an associate professor of psychology at the York
Campus. He began his academic career as a student at HACC’s
Lancaster Campus and transferred to Millersville University where he
received his bachelor’s degree. Following graduation, he moved to
Chicago where he attended Adler University. James did his residency in
North Dakota with a Souix tribe before coming back to Pennsylvania
when he was offered a position at the York Campus.
James feels he was “not the best student” and, because of that,
considers one of his best personal accomplishments to be earning his
degrees.
His best advice is find what you are passionate about doing and enjoy
the work. He believes success isn’t about money, it’s about happiness.
James’s greatest accomplishment was marrying his wife. She
graciously took on the burden of the finances when he was in school and moved to North Dakota for his
residency.
In his spare time, James’s passion is art and cars. He is currently fixing the steering on a Camaro and enjoys
painting, mostly with oil but also a little water color.
FACULTY BONDING On Tuesday, October 17, several York Campus
faculty members met for an afternoon of team
building.
They enjoyed bowling, snacks, and a bit of
competition at our campus neighbor, Colony
Park Lanes North.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Academic Dean, Margie Mattis, and Facilties
Management Supervisor, Tom Frye, for completing the Excellence in
Management for HACC Supervisors course held by the Human
Resources Department.
The course, held over a five week period, is a soft skills program
designed to provide supervisors the required skills and knowledge to
manage their teams to do their best and to become an effective
supervisor.
Thank you, Tom and Margie, for your dedication to HACC York!
ART EXHIBIT Galleryork's debut exhibition, Together We are Strong, featured three dynamic York city artist's: Carol
Oldenburg, Kara Oldenburg-Gonzales, and Brenda Wintermyer.
Artist Carol Oldenburg, pictured below, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Kutztown
State College. Oldenburg highlights the beauty in images she sees on a daily basis; both gardens and farmland
have been recurring themes in her paintings. She
applies, rubs in, scratches through, and layers paint to
achieve the subtle effects, described as dreamlike, that
are evident in her work. Portraits, which have been a
mainstay of her business since 1976, are included in
both corporate and private collections nationwide.
We're excited about the success of our first exhibition
and are looking forward to many more. Galleryork is
providing a venue to connect HACC York students
with local, regional, and international artists.
