Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven extends its deep appreciation to the following individuals and institutions for their generous support in 2009. Their contributions—monetary, in-kind goods and professional services—enable us to fulfill Habitat’s mission to eliminate poverty and substandard housing through the creation of homeownership opportunities for low income, working families.

GREEN BUILDINGOur homes, designed by nationally acclaimed architect and Habitat Board member Duo Dickinson, are Energy Star-certified. The energy-saving features include Energy Star-rated appliances, light fixtures and bulbs; energy conserving windows; water saving fixtures; and high efficiency hot water heaters and furnaces. Habitat continues to expand its efforts to create homes that are environmentally responsible. Reducing energy demand also reduces energy costs, which benefits our families as well as the planet.

NEW CONSTRUCTIONIn 2009, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven (HfHGNH) completed and dedicated four new construction homes and began work on a fifth in Hamden, our second building project in that community. 2009 saw the completion of our 72nd home built since our founding in 1986.

K 15 Wilson Street, New Haven, home of Eliezer Trinidad, Evelyn Matos and their three children, was sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital and its Medical Staff.

K 23 Wilson Street, New Haven, home of Pedro Castro, Ginette Quiñones and their three children, was sponsored by Madison Cares, one of Habitat’s community-based house sponsors. It was the fifth Habitat home sponsored by the group since its founding in 2003.

K 34 Dewitt Street, New Haven, home of Marisol Morales and her three daughters, was primarily sponsored by The Annie E. Casey Foundation. Participants in the Skills for Life program, a pilot project in partnership with Youth Continuum, helped to build the house.

K 42 Dewitt Street, New Haven, home of Pedro Candelario-Cuevas and Arrelis Vazquez and their three children, was sponsored by Amity Cares, another community-based house sponsor. It was the third Habitat project

completed by the group since 2004.

K 40 Edgecomb Street, Hamden, home of Robert Henderson and his children, was sponsored by Sleeping Giant Build, also a regular Habitat house sponsor. SGB has built two homes for Habitat families since their founding in 2007.

REHABHabitat completed one moderate rehab in 2009. Because of the foreclosure crisis, we expect to acquire more property from the City of New Haven for complete gutting and rehabbing.

K 129 Rosette Street, New Haven, home of Shimyka Johnson and her family

SKILLS FOR LIFE PROGRAMIn 2009, The Annie E. Casey Foundation jointly awarded Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven and Youth Continuum a grant for $150,000 to collaborate on a two-year pilot program to provide

construction skills training and life and workplace skills for young adults preparing to transition from homelessness or

Connecticut’s foster care system to self-sufficiency.

YOUTH CONTINUUM PARTICIPANTS HELPED BUILD 34 DEWITT STREETThey were involved in all stages of construction, including framing, sheetrocking, taping, insulating, siding, painting, tiling and much more. As the house took shape, the participants’ growing self-confidence in their new skills became perceptible. By dedication time, they had learned to work as a team with a common goal. Several of the participants plan to pursue additional training or apprenticeships in the construction field.

WHO WE AREHabitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven is an affiliate of Habitat International, an ecumenical Christian housing ministry based in Americus, Georgia. Habitat International’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing around the world and to make adequate housing a matter of conscience and action. Habitat welcomes to the table partners from any faith, or no faith, who are willing to pick up a hammer and help improve the lives of families in need.

WHAT WE DOHabitat affiliates build and renovate houses in partnership with people in need, and then sell the homes to the homeowner partners. Homeowners are selected based on their need for housing, ability to repay a 25-year, 0% interest mortgage and willingness to partner with Habitat. Because of Habitat’s no-profit loans and because the houses are principally built with volunteer labor, mortgage payments are affordable for low-income families.
